Red squirrels and fox squirrels hanging out at our house in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Here are some pictures of my squirrel neighbors taken on April 19th and 26th, 2021. Some of the young red squirrels and the mommas were not too bothered by me today - so I got some nice pictures outside and without glass between me and the little ones.

This was one of two A1 sized 'Fraisthorpe Beach' photos I showed in an exhibition called 'Strange Familiars' that took place in October 2021. It was held at Espacio Gallery, East London. The exhibition was originally due to take place in April 2020.
Here is an explanation behind the exhibition:
'The people we meet, the places we visit, or even a simple object we have or use can seem very familiar. But occasionally, when we are in that familiar place, or with those familiar faces or holding that familiar object we look again, and discover something new, something strange.
Twenty-two London photographers present ‘Strange Familiars’, a vibrant exhibition that perhaps catches a contemporary mood as much as it explores nuance in the everyday. With work that stretches from nature photography, street photography and portraiture to architectural studies and abstract, this compelling show presents a very diverse range of contemporary photography.'
A big thank you to krystina stimakovits for having the vision for this exhibition before lockdown hit us all.

I took these two 'In Camera' double exposure photographs of subsided wartime concrete pillboxes on the beach at Fraisthorpe, Yorkshire, where coastal erosion remains an issue.

13 May 2021, the Dutch war film "De Oost" was released. The film is set in 1946 in the Netherlands East Indies at the time of the Indonesian National Revolution. My cousin Kees Ruigrok sent me this photo, in which our uncle Frans can be seen, leaving to fight in the war against Indonesia's independence. Young Dutch men were sent to participate in this war, many unknown with what to expect. Over 100,000 Indonesians were killed during the war of independence and some 6,000 Dutch soldiers. In recent years, information was published about excessive violence during this war, which turned out to be not exceptional. The 2018 documentary series "Onze Jongens op Java" ("Our Boys in Java)" showed interviews with 14 men who served during this war. Many of them had not talked about this period for 70 years. The series gave a clear and personal insight in what took place during this war.
What did the experiences in Indonesia do to my uncle, mentally, I have wondered for a long time. My cousin had talked to our uncle about it and had heard that he had found a way to deal with it, several of his fellow soldiers were traumatised.
My grandfather Piet Lommerse, first from the right in the photo, had a tulip bulb preparation company in Hillegom. His sons Frans, Jan and Kees participated in the company and currently, the company is led by my cousin Frans, son of Kees and Joke Lommerse. Two sons are not shown in the above photo. Jan Lommerse was working in New Zealand as a carpenter at the time. After his return, several company buildings were built by him. Kees Lommerse was having medical treatment in Brabant at the time.
My father, Dick Lommerse, was the youngest son and because he was good at school, he studied HBS (higher secundary education) and at Nyenrode and worked for an international company.
I saw this photo for the first time this week and was struck by the resemblance of my father with a photo of myself as a youth (underneath).

Black-crowned Night Heron
The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), commonly abbreviated to just night heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia (where it is replaced by the closely related rufous night heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).

Eastern Screech Owl
The Eastern Screech Owl or Eastern screech-owl (Megascops asio) is a small owl that is relatively common in Eastern North America, from Mexico to Canada. This species is native to most wooded environments of its distribution and, more so than any other owl in its range, has adapted well to manmade development, although it frequently avoids detection due to its strictly nocturnal habits.

Op 24 september 2021 had ik een dagje vrij, en toevallig moest mijn vader voor zijn werk naar Twente. Ik kon worden afgezet bij de Zandsteenweg in Deurningen. Na ruim anderhalf uur kwam daar ook een vriend van mij, en we besloten samen te spotten en het idee ontstond dat ik pas 's avonds met de trein terug zou gaan. Achteraf een heel goed idee, want er gebeurden heel interessante dingen.
Als eerst was het aan een zwarte DBC 189 om met de lege Pontrein te passeren, en vrij kort daarna kwam Railexperts met wat koppelwagens van het ICNG transport van de nacht ervoor. Echter raakten deze niet veel verderop defect en heeft daar ruim 90 minuten gestaan. Ondertussen kwam de Eurobahn die er vlak achter zat, al aanrijden en moest dus voor rood wachten.
Dit zorgde op zijn beurt weer voor een nieuwe storing, want omdat Eurobahn voor rood moest wachten en de overweg dus niet kon deactiveren, bleef de overweg dicht en veroorzaakte dus een overwegstoring. Ook deze hield ruim anderhalf uur aan. Ondertussen hadden wij prachtig zicht op zowel de FLIRT als de koppelwagens, waardoor we goed foto's konden maken waar beide treinen op stonden.
Dit soort foto's vind ik altijd wat leuks hebben, en nu al helemaal aangezien de voorste trein ook niet alledaags is. De foto is niet enorm geweldig maar gezien de situatie en de combinatie en het feit dat ik het gewoon móest delen, toch het besluit om de foto te delen ;)
Hier zien we Eurobahn FLIRT E.T. 4.06 stilstaan vlak voor Oldenzaal, terwijl slechts geringe afstand ervoor Railexperts 9903 met de koppelwagens defect was. Weer een bijzondere ervaring erbij!

Had this crazy idea to take the drive to Susquehanna SP in Maryland yesterday, hoping there was no rain when I got there. The rain held off, but it was very overcast and dark in the very dense woods. The drive isn't bad, didn't take long at all. Definitely worth a trip there.

Taking part in Ex Joint Warrior 2021 NATO exercise and seen here at what was the old RAF Leuchars camp is this very impressive CH53 Super Stallion.
The CH-53 Super Stallion is a family of heavy-lift transport helicopters designed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft. Originally developed for use by the United States Marine Corps, it is currently in service with Germany, Iran, Israel, and Mexico. The United States Air Force operated the HH-53 "Super Jolly Green Giant" during the late– and post–Vietnam-War era, updating most of them as the MH-53 Pave Low.

The Old McLean County Courthouse and Square is located in downtown Bloomington. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and encompasses the old McLean County Courthouse and the courthouse-facing sides of Washington St. to the south, Center St. to the west, and Jefferson St. to the north. The historic buildings to the east of the old courthouse on the N. Main St. side of the square were destroyed by fire in the 1985. Today a contemporary office building occupies the area.
The site was home to three previous courthouses before this building was completed in 1903. The first courthouse at the site was built in 1831, and the second in 1836. The third was built in 1868, but was destroyed by a fire in 1900 that also destroyed many of the buildings in downtown Bloomington.
The 1903 courthouse was designed by William Reeves and John M. Baile of the Peoria firm Reeves and Baile, and is built in the Classical Revival architectural style. The exterior is clad in limestone and of solid masonry construction. The plan is rectangular and symmetrical and is executed in the Corinthian order. From the roof rise a limestone drum and a copper dome which are said to be modeled after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The east and west faces of the building are home to the principal elevations. They feature three story porticos, a Corinthian pediment, balustrade caps Nand the cornice. The building's windows are decorated with Doric surrounds.
The fifth and current McLean County Courthouse was completed in 1977. The courts were the first to move to the new building but until 1991, general county offices were still housed here in the old courthouse. The McLean County Historical Society put its museum in the Old Courthouse in 1988, and today all 4 floors of the building are occupied by the McLean County Museum of History for exhibits, collections storage, and offices.
Bloomington is the seat of McLean County. It is adjacent to Normal, and is the more populous of the two principal municipalities of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area. Bloomington is 135 miles (217 km) southwest of Chicago, and 162 miles (261 km) northeast of St. Louis. The estimated population of Bloomington in 2019 was 77,330, with a metro population of 191,067.
The Urban Fox
Wild foxes have learned to adapt to the urban environment in order to survive. By nature, foxes are nocturnal and hunt at night, whereas the urban fox has adapted its behavior to survive and can be seen during daylight hours.
Locally, a fox vixen has located her den in the foundational remains of a razed building complex along the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore. She has six Kits, which can be seen frolicking in the debris and along the dunes during the day. The fox family has become local celebrities and unfortunately people have begun feeding them. Never feed wild animals. Although you may feel as if you’re helping them survive, you are actually harming them. Feeding foxes can alter their natural behavior and they may lose its fear of humans.
“Wildlife that is fed by people become less experienced at forging for their natural food and may become dependent on handouts that are not a part of their natural diets. This is especially true in juvenile animals that have not yet developed their own foraging skills and have little ability to fend for themselves once handouts cease.” ~ Julie King, Senior Wildlife Biologist

Red Fox
The Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and the most abundant wild member of the Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".

Normally this path should have been mowed, but I was unlucky... and I had to follow this path for 2 km and believe me, then 2 km is long when you have to struggle through this tall grass and you don't see much of the surrounding landscape either. It felt quite like an adventure :)) Fortunately, there were many damselflies and dragonflies who kept me company and where I tried to take pictures of, but that was not easy among all that tall grass :)) I was also soon covered from head to toe with grass seed, which I spread out the rest of the walk and even on the bus home I must have left grass seed... Luckily there were no ticks in the grass!
