Jiankou (Chinese: 箭扣; pinyin: Jiànkòu) is a section of the Great Wall of China. It is seen by many people as the most magnificent part of the Great Wall.

In English, 'Jiankou,' is translated to 'Arrow Nock' as the shape of the mountain resembles an arrow with the collapsed ridge opening up, reminiscent of an arrow nock. The wall is 20km long and located 73 kilometres (45 mi) north of Beijing in the Huairou District. The Jiankou section of the Great Wall of China is located between the Mutianyu and the Moshikou sections of the Great Wall of China. It is built on a steep mountain ridge and a popular hike amongst visitors.

The Jiankou section of the wall was constructed in 1368 during the period of the Ming dynasty. During the Ming Dynasty, this wall was conntinously rebuilt and reworked up until 1644. It is made from dolomite, a white sedimentary carbonate rock.

Diving In The Sea Of Colors by Daniel Margraf. Hunted for a good shadow around this rather crowded square in multiple sessions, with a depressing rate of satisfactory captures. This was from the last session that I went back for after ditching friends towards the end of the display, and some of the crowd was seemingly finally tired of the public LSD trip so I could get some isolated subjects.

Unsure how much I should have pushed the shadow towards a full black silhouette, so it got stuck in a somewhat awkward middle.

On our back deck, we have a large lotus plant in a pot. We started it in May with an 8-inch piece of root. I am amazed at how large the plant grew and that it had seven beautiful blooms. This is the last one.

This winter, we will store the plant at the bottom of our pond, and next year divide it into three plants.

We have crazy windchills (i.e. feels like) for the coming week! Guess where I am going to be all week - at HOME! Time to dig into my photo archives for some warm, colourful images.

Monday, 8 February 2021: our temperature is -26C (windchill -37C) at 12:30 pm. Sunrise is at 8:01 am, and sunset is at 5:39 pm. An overcast morning with the sun trying to break through, but, really, who in their right mind would venture out into -37C windchill?! I'm always conscious of the fact that if my car broke down or got stuck in snow, it would mean that someone would have to come and help. I wouldn't want to force that on someone in these temperatures, even if it's their job! At 3:30 pm, we have an Extreme Cold Warning in effect.

I am adding the description from one of my previously posted photos from the same visit. This day, I was really lucky with the two Snow Leopards. Other times that I have seen them, they tend to either be fast asleep on a high rock ledge or else prowling around non-stop. For a change, they were walking about closer to the glass 'wall'. Unfortunately, when there are other zoo visitors standing there, you get all their reflections in the glass. This time, I managed to avoid them. Such beautiful animals.

"The Snow Leopard cannot roar, despite possessing an incomplete ossification of the hyoid bone, which was previously thought to be essential for allowing the big cats to roar. However, new studies show that the ability to roar is due to other morphological features, especially of the larynx, which are absent in the snow leopard." From Wikipedia.

"The total wild population of the snow leopard is estimated at between 4,000 and 7,500 individuals. In 1972, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, (IUCN) placed the snow leopard on its Red List of Threatened Species as "Endangered," the same classification given the panda and the tiger.....There are numerous agencies working to conserve the snow leopard and its threatened mountain ecosystems." From Wikipedia.

There are also 600-700 snow leopards in zoos around the world.

"I finally got as far as the Calgary Zoo, on 12 September 2019. The last time I was there was on 26 June 2018 and the time before that had been 6 October 2015. I used to go several times a year, but the long gap from 2015 to 2018 was because of major road construction and a bridge replacement right by the Zoo. Anyway, it felt good to be back there almost two months ago.

My visit only covered a small area of the Zoo, as I usually spend a lot of time in the Conservatory, enjoying the plants and tropical butterflies. I did call in to see the Giant Pandas one last time before they leave the Zoo after their five-year visit. (The cubs were due to go back to China this fall, but now will be staying in Calgary till early 2020.) How lucky we have been to have these four amazing animals visit our Zoo. They were in an inside enclosure, full of plants - and Bamboo, of course. The Zoo had another Panda visit way back in 1988, but they only stayed for seven months. The Conservation Status of the Giant Panda is Vulnerable, with fewer than 1,800 giant pandas left in the wild.

A few hours well spent, happily clicking. Hopefully, it won't be so long before my next visit, though the west entrance does close each winter, and the north entrance is out of my driving comfort zone. It felt so good to once again be back in a place full of colour and interest.

It also feels good to have some colourful photos to post this morning, as it is a very overcast day, with a temperature of 1C (windchill -2C). It must have rained last night, then snowed lightly this morning, or vice versa. More snow forecast for tomorrow and the next day. Shortly after this September Zoo visit, we had a major three-day snow storm. I reckoned there must have been about 10 inches of snow on top of my fence and, sure enough, 10.6 inches (27 cm) of snow was recorded. Further south, in Waterton, they received 37.4 inches (95 cm) of the white stuff."
