Thru the Coronavirus measures and the rising fear of the public, the Rotterdam streets have become empty.

This situation enabled me to make a moody Chargesheimer (known for his fabulous Köln 5 Uhr 30 series, check out a vid about it: here) type of capture, without having to get out of bed at an ungodly hour or getting run over while framing at leisure. Shot from the Veem-straat.

This is number 273 of the Rotterdam street album. And 7160 and the first one of the Sociology group without people.

The cantilevered opened bridge deck of the Erasmus bridge (2006) strikes quite a pose when seen in close proximity of the rhythmically articulated 'De Rotterdam' high rise (2014): hotel (left), municipal offices (middle) apartments (right).

Another shot from last weekend. In the distance, you can see the windmills of Kinderdijk.

Have a nice day everyone!

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Oude Noorden, Bloklandstraat, Coen Moulijn, Hans Citroen (cut from B&T)

As announced, the street soccer monument dedicated to the legendary Fijenoord striker ('linksbuiten') Coen Moulijn is shown here.

Coen Moulijn (1937-2011) grew up in the Bloklandstraat in Rotterdam's Oude Noorden quarter. The wall against which he had played football endlessly in his youth was famous, but it fell victim to urban renewal in the 1970s. In 1990, a playground elsewhere in the same street was provided with a new "wall of Coen Moulijn", designed by Hans Citroen.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Amare muziekgebouw, Stair case, Hall, People (cut from B&T)

The Amare education & culture building with its 4 concert halls has a delightfully intricate structure to accommodate the concert halls, lobbies, foyers and restaurant.

The building was designed by NOAHH/Patrick Fransen, JCAU/Jo Coenen en NL Architects/Kamiel Klaasse. Jo Coenen left the project prematurely.

The building houses the Dance and Music centre, the Residentie Orchestra, the Dutch Dance Theatre and the Royal Conservatory and actually consists of five separate buildings: the outer shell and four separate boxes - the concert halls. They each have their own foundation to prevent the rest of the complex from being affected by ‘crosstalk’ vibrations of one building hindering the others.

This construction allowed two of the four concert halls to slightly sag. As a result, the doors of one of halls and the hall of the royal conservatory can hardly be closed anymore. As a temporary solution, parts of the floor covering has been removed. . Building sinking is by the way a not uncommon thing but sagging isn't. It's problematic since it's happens partially / a-symmetrically.

Shot near the great hall with fascinating decorations during an extended Den Haag lunch with Leuntje. There was still some construction work going on, as you can see in the left of the frame.

This is number 38 of Theatres & Concert halls.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Rotterdam, Maastunnel, Tunnel of Love (cut from L, R & T)

A few days ago he good ol’ Maastunnel in Rotterdam had its 77th anniversary. To celebrate this, the tunnel for pedestrian (the lowest of the three tunnels the Maastunnel actually consists of) was transformed to a ‘Tunnel of Love’. Very much the same way as the Dommeltunnel during Eindhoven Glow festival (2011): the normal lighting is changed to black lighting and the wall and ceilings are covered with heart-shaped reflective stickers. In addition to the Dommeltunnel (shown: here ) in the Maastunnel thee pavement was covered with a black wooden walkway, also with the heart stickers. Which made the visual effect more immersive. (users of tripods beware: the wooden walkway vibrates due to the many visitors passing by - this shot was handheld). Both the Dommeltunnel and the Maastunnel were transformed by: Studio Vollaerszwart.

Considering the somewhat checkered reputation of the Maastunnel - before the installation of camera's and the permanent presence of security personnel some ten years ago, the pedestrian and cyclists tunnels were scary and 'socially unsafe'- there's some irony in the transformation and its title.

Number 13 of the Tunnel vision album.

Snow and ice in an urban area can become a nuisance when it is grimily melting away at the end of a cold period. The runner is juxtaposed by the fence that signals the redevelopment of the Fenix 2 veem into the 'Landverhuizers (emigrants) museum'.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnvhaven, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier (slightly cut)

The Rijnhaven, as if the redevelopment didn’t take place. High tide and the swollen river Maas flooded the old harbour basin again. And I can be naïve; I accessed the platform level of the metro station Rijnhaven, expecting the old harbour to be emptied and with a fine dusting of snow. And home again, expecting Photoshop's new generative filling tool (AI-based) to fully de-obstruct the New Luxor (obstructed as it was by a lighting fixture of Rijnhaven metro station). Oh well ;-)

In the BG is the Wilhelmina Pier, once the home of the HAL transatlantic shipping company, the Hanno container terminal and various storage facilities (vemen), now accommodates some of Rotterdam’s most iconic highrises, from l to r: Montevideo (Mecanoo/Francine Houben), World Port Center(Norman Foster, New Orleans( Alvaro Siza) and Boston (Van Dongen-Koschuchts), De Rotterdam (OMA/Koolhaas), KPN building (Renzo Piano), and the Erasmus Bridge (Ben van Berkel). The Regional Court building (Kraaijvanger Architects) and InHolland (Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects) are on the right.

The cause of this radical restructuring was, of course, the global change in maritime transport modes and the Kop van Zuid urban revitalization plan that eventually made the best of it and converted the Pier and the rest of the Kop van Zuid into an integrated living, recreative and commercial service quarter. It’s comparable with the Docklands in London and the waterfront re-developments in Barcelona and New York.

Schouwburgplein by Adriaan Geuze/West-8

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Maasvlakte 2, Portlantis, Interior (uncut)

The Rotterdam harbour is best explored by touring thru it. But a visit to Portlantis is still vital, because it offers an excellent overview using its observation deck. And on the five floors, below it, the harbour's inside technical and logistical stories are told.

The building was designed by MVDRV, and shown here is its physical core, a giant atrium looking like a NASA launching pad. MVDRV has produced some fine atria before, like those of the Markthal and the Depot.

This is number 11 of the MVDRV album and 385 of Rotterdam harbour & industry.
