A detail of the array of ventilation shafts of an underground parking on the Wilhelminapier (the New Orleans high rise in the BG), an integral part of the Kop Zuid urban restructuring project, which transformed a former delipidated harbour area into a lively residential recreative and creative industry and living quarter.

After the Rotterdam harbour activities were moved to the outer ring of the Rotterdam agglomeration in the 80s, the Katendrecht quarter is, at last, undergoing a massive redevelopment.
There are now terraced houses and apartment buildings and a school on the southern edge (the Maashaven side) of Katendrecht, where the Hanno freight terminal was. Shown here are Katendrecjt facades, amongst which the ´Groene Kaap (2021, Bureau Massa)

I mentioned the Peugeot 404 pick-up as a well-known (African) migration vehicle two times (and showed one here). In this artwork, an artist (I alas forgot to record the relevant information tablet) played with the migration truck (not all of them are Peugeot’s) and recreated some use cases.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland,Rotterdam,Cerntre, Wijnhaveneiland, The red apple, Two other high rises (uncut)
In the 80s it had become evident that the strictly functionalistic urban design of the city centre of post 2nd world war Rotterdam didn't cut it any more. In the first post-war decades, it did enhance functionality, offering a clear break from the congestion and other development problems of the pre-war city centre. And its morphology offered the symbolism of a brave new world. But due to the post-war social-economic boom and the rise of consumerism, the strict segregation of living, business and administration made the city heart feel like a place that didn't seem to live and breathe.
It was simply too high on business and too low on living and recreation. One of the programs to rectify this was the R'dam high rise policy - the insertion of a series of high-density up-market apartment buildings in and near the city centre. The Red Apple (KCAP Architecten & Jan des Bouvrie) is one of them. Apart from the verticalism, a prominent design feature of the Red Apple is the red aluminium facade cladding.
The three highrise look to be part of the same block, but no, there's of course spatial compression at play here.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Kunstmuseum, Staircase, Wall Drawing no. 373 (Soll Lewitt) (uncut)
A part of Soll LeWit's Wall Drawing number 373: Lines in Four Directions (equal spacing on an unequal wall) covers the iconic grand staircase of The Kunstmuseum Den Haag (Formerly the Gemeente museum (Municipal Art museum, (1935 H.P. Berlage).
Shown here is not the entire Le Witt graphic. The museum states the following about him and the giant Wall drawing:
Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) is one of the founders of conceptual art and American Minimal Art. Minimal art aims to establish a relationship with the immediate environment using the simplest possible means. In doing so, the artist prefers to use simple, possibly found materials. LeWitt's wall drawings and sculptures are world-famous, as is his radical view that an idea for a work of art is more important than its execution. For example, he designs his wall drawings himself but has them executed by a team of assistants. In the 1960s, this conceptual thinking was a direct break with the past and an attack on the age-old principle of the artist as an individual genius.
In 1983, the museum acquired Wall drawing no. 373 by LeWitt. The drawing consists of parallel black and grey stripes. The diagonal and vertical lines run in four different directions and emphasize the height of the staircase in the Berlage building. In the spirit of conceptual art, LeWitt draws a diagram with instructions and leaves the execution to his assistants. Not the artist but his team travels to the destination to create the wall drawing: comparable to an architect who never actually executes a building himself. LeWitt created the design after receiving the technical specifications of the wall where his artwork was to be placed, along with photos and floor plans. He relies entirely on his team for the execution.
The artist also makes a certificate for the buyer of the work in which he records the idea for the drawing. This makes it possible to re-execute the drawing later. If the wall drawing itself disappears, for example, through overpainting, the artwork still exists as an idea on paper. This wall drawing was restored in 2000 after it had been painted over during the renovation of the building. In gratitude for the restoration, the artist donated a new series of wall drawings to the museum.
Sol LeWitt and the Kunstmuseum have a long history together. In 1968, the museum organized the first Minimal Art exhibition in Europe. Two years later, LeWitt's first solo museum exhibition in Europe followed. Since then, various works by the artist have been added to the museum collection. Examples include the five geometric shapes on the façade of KM21 and the murals in the hall of the Kunstmuseum.
Sol Le Witt's Wall Drawing No 1084 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, in its dynamic social context, is here.
This is number 308 of the Museum album and 1583 of Minimalism / explicit Graphism.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Zuidplen, Rotterdamse DakenDagen/Bovenop Zuid (uncut).
Captured during the Bovenop Zuid roof walk, on the roof of the ZuidPlein shopping mall, shot towards subway station Zuidplein and the centre of Rotterdam.
The walk is street-art rich and fascinating. The swirling lines of the floor painting ('Z-A (Zuid al het andere)') are from Ilke Gers (member of the Opperclaes collective), and the photos (Rotterdam kids at a boxing school) from Marwan Magroun.
The other artist(collectives) showcased @ Bovenop Zuid are: here.
Dutch Steigers again realized the scaffolding. The nature of the construction material sometimes adds a fairground type of thrill. The supporting towers are iron, and the walkway planks are aluminium, and they sometimes nicely sag a bit while walking on them.
The context: "In modern cities, miles of unused flat rooftops await a new function. In Rotterdam alone, there are over 18 square kilometres of unused flat roofs. That must change, and the rooftops can provide the space to realize the housing challenge, energy transition, climate change and inclusiveness in cities". Text: from the Dakendagen website.
By the way: Hurry, Bovenop Zuid closes on June 30.

One of the recent residential highrises of the Wilhelminapier (Boston(Van Dongen-Koschuch) flags the omnipresence of OMA/Rem Koolhaas. De Rotterdam. Well, the dreary light brown textured brick (this type of brick is the bane of contemporary architecture) facade sorely needs it.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Tuindorp Heijplaat, RDM Campus, Machinery (uncut)
Time for some hard-boiled tech graphisms. This one was captured at the RDM ship yard, just outside the former Machine hall. The red and yellow structure seems to be part of an industrial ventilation system.
The machine hall was a production facility of the former RDM shipyard on Heijplaat. After the bankruptcy of the yard and many years of dereliction and mixed-use, it's redeveloped (together with the administration and some other buildings) as the RDM Campus with the Port of Rotterdam (Havenbedrijf), Hogeschool Rotterdam and ROC Albedacollege as prime movers. The latter two are also in the role of user.
