Caland Canal Windbreak [1750 meters long, 25 meters high] by architect Maarten Struijs.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid-Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Katendrecht, Wilhelminapier, Migratiemuseum, Pick-up use cases, People (cut from all sides)

I mentioned the Peugeot 404 pick-up as a well-known (African) migration vehicle two times (and showed one here). In this artwork, an artist (I alas forgot to record the relevant information tablet) played with the migration truck (not all of them are Peugeot’s) and recreated some use cases.

This is number 321 of Museum and 500 of Interiors.

The neo-modernist Hillekop residential building designed in 1989 by Francien Houben with Erick van Egeraat (Mecanoo). It's a social housing edifice, realized for Stichting Tuinstad Zuidwijk (now: Hef Wonen). The mural is 'Pow wow', created by Janis de Man.

Shot with a Sigma 20-40 f/2,8 EX DG lens. One gotta love those bright Sigma DG vintage lenses. This one had just arrived after being send thru a series of DHL logistic hubs in Yokohama, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Leipzig and Amsterdam.

This number 31`7 of the Urban frontiers album and 64 of Graffiti / street art.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Zuidplen, Rotterdamse DakenDagen/Bovenop Zuid (uncut).

Captured during the Bovenop Zuid roof walk, on the roof of the ZuidPlein shopping mall, shot towards subway station Zuidplein and the centre of Rotterdam.

The walk is street-art rich and fascinating. The swirling lines of the floor painting ('Z-A (Zuid al het andere)') are from Ilke Gers (member of the Opperclaes collective), and the photos (Rotterdam kids at a boxing school) from Marwan Magroun.

The other artist(collectives) showcased @ Bovenop Zuid are: here.

Dutch Steigers again realized the scaffolding. The nature of the construction material sometimes adds a fairground type of thrill. The supporting towers are iron, and the walkway planks are aluminium, and they sometimes nicely sag a bit while walking on them.

The context: "In modern cities, miles of unused flat rooftops await a new function. In Rotterdam alone, there are over 18 square kilometres of unused flat roofs. That must change, and the rooftops can provide the space to realize the housing challenge, energy transition, climate change and inclusiveness in cities". Text: from the Dakendagen website.

By the way: Hurry, Bovenop Zuid closes on June 30.

This is number 8 of Rotterdamse Daken Dagen 2022 & 2023.

One of the signs that normalcy has indeed returned in the twilight of the dreadful C19 pandemic, is the return of the Rotterdam Marathon. it was pushed backwards (from April to October) after the cancelling of the 2020 edition.

One of the attractions of the marathon are the music groups. Shown here is the Samba lanço brass band, shot on the Laan op Zuid.

This is number 39 of the Rotterdam Marathon album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier, Rijnhaven bridge (cut from all sides)

Well, for now enough nature on my stream, it's time for some hard-boiled architecture shots again ;-)

The Rijnhaven bridge (2012 Quist Wintermans Architecten) in Rotterdam connects Katendrecht with the Wilhelminapier and is manufactured by construction company Hillebrand (Middelburg).

The 160 m long bridge is accessible to cyclists and pedestrians and there's also some street furniture.

The movable part of the bridge is 27 meters wide.

Its nickname of the bridge is 'Hoerenloper', referencing the former red-light district on Katendrecht.

The eccentric shape and colour of the bridge are inspired by harbour cranes.

In the BG is of course the Wilhelminapier and its high rises (prominently: the Montevideo(Mecanoo) vertical city) and HNY, the former head office of the HAL.

Shot with the vintage diminutive Lumix GF3 MFT system cam - so I'm again continuing my curious lenses & cameras exploration.

This is number 1074 of Minimalism / explicit graphism and 559 of Rotterdam architecture.

One of the recent residential highrises of the Wilhelminapier (Boston(Van Dongen-Koschuch) flags the omnipresence of OMA/Rem Koolhaas. De Rotterdam. Well, the dreary light brown textured brick (this type of brick is the bane of contemporary architecture) facade sorely needs it.

Back to Rotterdam (and after that Delft) for a new series archi-graphisms.

You might have seen this building before ;-) It’s ‘De Rotterdam’ high rise (2014, OMA/Koolhaas) as shot from the street side (Wilhelminkade). In the building is a hotel (right), municipal offices (middle), apartments (left) and a multilevel parking (bottom).

Bulk buffering and -transfer is one of the things of the Waalhaven. Shot near the Marcor Stevedoring terminal.

The Waalhaven is one of the harbours on the left bank of the Maas in Rotterdam. With its area of 310 ha, it is the largest excavated harbour basin in the world. The Waalhaven flows into the Nieuwe Maas and is directly connected to the sea via the Scheur and the Nieuwe Waterweg.

This is number 332 of Rotterdam Harbour & Industry and 1279 of Minimalism & explicit Graphism.

Europe, Holland, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnhaven, Katendrecht, Bayhouse (uncut)

‘Bayhouse’ has a long and convoluted history. It started its life as 'The View—European China Centre Rotterdam (ECCR)', the materialization of a large-scale cross-cultural business project created by a team of Dutch (Volker Wessels Vastgoed) and Belgian & Chinese (Shanghai Construction Group) investors. The project involved houses, shops, offices, and public spaces.

Construction started in April 2011 and was halted again after the completion of the twin-layered underground parking in 2012 because the Belgian partner jumped ship and the Dutch government didn't make up its mind about providing the Chinese investors with residence permits. That last part seems to be a curious flaw in a plan with a significant cross-cultural and economic scope like this. After a while, the Chinese partners left the project, too.

The construction site lay vacant for many years, and the project was eventually realized according to the new plans by Joke Vis Archi-tecten. They entail a hotel and upmarket residential units (1-3 million per unit).

The reflected high rise in the BL corner is 'Montevideo'.

This number 1555 of the Minimalism / explicit Graphism album 350 of Urban Frontiers.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnhaven, Wilhelminapier, High rises, Reflections. (slightly cut).

The Wilhelmina Pier, once the home of the HAL transatlantic shipping company, the Hanno container terminal and various storage facilities (vemen), now accommodates some of Rotterdam’s most iconic highrises, from l to r: Montevideo(Mecanoo/Francine Houben), World Port Center(Norman Foster, New Orléans(Alvaro Siza) and Boston(Van Dongen-Koschuchts), De Rotterdam (OMA/Koolhaas), KPN building (Renzo Piano). The cause of this radical change was, of course, the global change in maritime transport modes ánd the Kop van Zuid urban revitalization plan that eventually made the best of it and converted the Pier and the rest of the Kop van Zuid to an integrated living, recreative and commercial service quarter. It’s comparable with the Docklands in London and the waterfront re-developments in Barcelona and New York.

Shot from the southern part of the Rijnhaven.

This is number 219 of Urban frontiers and 965 of Minimalism / explicit Graphism.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Foto museum, Chris Killip exhibition (uncut)

Christopher David Killip (1946 – 2020) was a Manx documentary photographer who also worked at Harvard University from 1991 to 2017, as a Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies.

He was influenced by HCB (Henry Cartier Bresson) and is known for his dramatic black-and-white images of people and (post-) industrial places, especially of Tyneside during the 80s, the austere Thatcherian era - the dark times of economic recession, mass unemployment, miner strikes and other civil unrest.

The 80s were also the years of new wave music. Some of Killip’s images made me remember the cover of the pivotal ’ Searching for the Young Soul Rebels’ album (Dexy’s Midnight Runners). They also evocated Elvis Costello's (Declan McManus) Oliver Army’s lyrics in which he states that the only future for ‘the boys of the Mersey, the Thames and the Tyne’ lies in joining the (mercenary) army.

I dunno if Killip ever photographed in Northern Ireland, but throughout the visit, I had the nasal/hoarse, kinda snarly voice of Feargal Sharkey of the Undertones playing in my head. Check out The Undertones - When Saturday Comes.

Shot on an enjoyable and informative museum visit with Hendrik van Leeuwen.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuis, Rijnhaven metro station, Crane (slightly cut from T)

A crane of the 'The View' building site, seen above the Rijnhaven metro station. Shortly after its completion the station wasn't very well rated during an international architecture contest. The jurors wrote: "It's the epitome of civil disobedient engineers' work". After a makeover, the station looks less brutalist.

Shot with the Sigma 85 / 1,4 wide open, hence the nice and shallowish DoF.

This is number 627 of of Rotterdam Architecture.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rottedam, KunstHal, Thomas J Price, People (slightly cut from L&R, cut from B&T)

Shot at the Thomas J Price retrospective in the KunstHal. About him: “Price’s mother fed his curiosity from a Young age by visiting museums with him. During these visits, he noticed that the artworks he saw did not reflect people who looked like him.

Later on, this awareness became a source of inspiration in his artistic practice. For his work “Hand Arrangement – (The Complex Journey of a Simple Form)”, Price used a book with black-and-white photographs of sculptures from antiquity. Each photo on display shows him manipulating its pages by covering parts of the sculptures with his hands, thereby steering our attention. In this way, Price symbolically positioned himself at the heart of the history of Western art.

This raises questions about representation and validation, causing us to reflect how and by whom the dominant, Western version of art history was recorded.”

(Source: text on the information panel accompanying this artwork in the museum).
