The Erasmus Bridge is historically the third Rotterdam bridge that crosses the river Maas and was the 'conditio sine qua non' for the redevelopment of the former industrial harbour and industrial area of the south bank of the Maas that's now known as the "Kop van Zuid"
The last of this Erasmus bridge mini series caught with the strange & nifty Nikon 1 S 1.
Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Rijnhaven (slightly cut from T)
There's a sharp distinction between the dark soil of the park zone of the redeveloped Rijnhaven and the zone in the FG, where an office/apartment building strip with up to 200m high edifices, called the 'Skyline Posthumalaan,' will be created.
The history of the Rijnhaven in a nutshell: It was created in 1895 to offer shelter for Rhine vessels (rijnaken) when they could not operate due to the freezing of the rivers during the winter. After that, the transit freight traffic to Rotterdam continued to increase, and the Rijnhaven was made suitable for large sea-going vessels by deepening it. As planned, the Rijnhaven became an essential port for the transhipment of bulk goods 'on stream' - the sea-going vessels were moored on buoys, separate from the quay, and their cargo was directly moved to rhine ships by floating cranes and elevators. In the 70/80s of the last century, the Rijnhaven lost its transhipment function and was returned to its old function. In 2015, the rhine ship berths were moved to, among others, the Maashaven, enabling redevelopment.

The Santos Blauwhoedenveem warehouse was built in 1902 for the storage of coffee shipped from the port of Santos (adjacent to Sao Paulo) in Brazil. In its time it was the highest and most modern warehouse of Rotterdam. The structure of the building: load bearing walls with riveted cast iron columns placed in a square grid, supporting the 6 wooden floors. Santos is a landmark building in Katendrecht. It looks formidable....and it smelled good - outside the building the smell of coffee and spices lingers. And inside it was almost overpowering.
Thru the redevelopment into a design centre this of course no longer the case. Eventually, ‘Stilwerk’ will house 20 design shops in the building. In addition, 18 short-stay homes will be realized. The design of the redevelopment is by architects Wessel de Jonge and RHWZ Architekten. The reconstruction started in November 2021.
A photo from the interior of the old veem, taken some 10 years before that, is here. It's part of the Santos album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Nederlandse Spoorwegen, Station Blaak (uncut)
Rotterdam Blaak is a multi-modal tram, railway and metro station. It's located in the city centre and the second station bearing the name "Blaak". The first one was located at the elevated luchtspoor that used to bisect Rotterdam. In 1993 the underground "Willemspoor-tunnel" replaced it. H.C. Reijnders designed the underground station. The trademark semi-transparant ‘lid’ of the station is made of steel and perspex and has a diameter of 35m.

The Betuwelijn is a 160 km freight-only rail line that connects Rotterdam's Maasvlakte harbour with the Dutch-German border. It uses 25 kV voltage.
Let’s examine it a bit more. Seen here is a former NS Cargo 6400 diesel locomotive (1200 kW). It was built in the early 90s by Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK) and still bears the name the NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) gave it before NS Cargo became part of the DB. The names of the 6400 series: first names of prominent NS personnel.

The New Luxor Theater has started construction of the Container Staircase. Soon, the public will be able to use it to reach the theatre's roof terrace. While ascending, people will encounter containers where performances take place. In the coming years, the redevelopment of the Rijnhaven (amongst other things, a park and a beach will be created) will be in plain view from the top of the staircase and the roof terrace.
Theatre makers and other artists can try out or exhibit their work in the containers on the Container Staircase, and visitors can meet these new talents. Construction started a few weeks ago. The project should be finished by the end of October (2024).
This is number 22 of the Nieuwe Luxor album and 25 of Rijnhaven - the redevelopment.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Scheveningen, North Sea, Waves, De Pier, Incoming tide, Pillars, Persons, Beach (slightly cut)
The 'Scheveningse Pier' has a long and checkered history. During its most recent transformation, a quantum leap was made: its two dreary & dysfunctional annexes were at last dealt with. One was torn down completely (well, a few rusty pillar remain) and the other annexe was partly demolished and used as a base for a big and cheery ferris wheel. The inside of the Pier was restyled and the big round restaurant (formerly operated by a restaurant / hotel chain 'which name shall not be mentioned' is restyled and reopened too. Lunching there was an all around pleasant experience. And last but not least: the massive concrete pillars were clad in a weathersealed colourful foil. Colourful and due to chosen colour palet somewhat surreal.
Shot during a fab but also cold and wet Pier exploration with Leun :-)

Europe, The Nethelands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Daken Dagen 2022, Lijnbaan mall (cut from B&T)
I dunno what the late grandmasters of Dutch functionalism Van den Broek & Bakama, would have thought about turning the Lijnbaan (1953), their functionalist chef d'oeuvre, into a tropical aquarium.
About the Lijnbaan: “Since its opening on October 9, 1953, this shopping area has been the center of the Rotterdam post-war reconstruction (wederopbouw). After the WW2, the Lijnbaan was a revolution in urban planning. Instead of shops with houses above them on both sides of a street, the shops were located on pedestrian promenades. The shops were supplied by service streets at the rear. Residential high rises were adjacent. Shown here is one of them the Lijnbaanflat (1957) - Herman Bakker.
Comedian Dorus gave the popularity of The Lijnbaan voice in the eponymous song : Dorus - De Lijnbaan ;-) Considering the narrative of the song it was based on (Tom Jones - Delilah) one wonders what Dorus' real opinion of the Lijnbaan was.
By the way: the 'culprit' of the temporary transformation of the Lijnbaan: Rotterdamse Dakendagen.
Shot from the roof of the Bijenkorf department store.
The context: "In modern cities, miles of unused flat rooftops await a new function. Rotterdam alone has over 18 square kilometres of unused flat roofs. That must change, and the rooftops can provide the space to realize the housing challenge, energy transition, climate change and inclusiveness in cities". From the Dakendagen website.
This is number 299 of Urban Frontiers and 5 of the new Rotterdamse Dakendagen 2002 album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Wijnhaven, V11, Lightship (slightly cut from L,T&B)
Back to Rotterdam for a little series of urban graphisms. Shown here is the top of the V11. A former lightship.
The history of two red lightships in Holland (Harlingen, check out the previous post) and Rotterdam) began when Trinity House (the UK ’Loodswezen’) decided first to automate their light ships. In the process, some ships were stripped of all internal walls and filled with Polyurethane (PUR) foam ). Later the ships were decommissioned altogether.
This Rotterdam one, Light Vessel 11 (now a ‘gastro pub’ and event location) was built in 1951 in Dartmouth (UK) and used on the south coast of Wales. After decommissioning, she was restored (1995 – 1999) in the Netherlands and used as a maritime café, and after that as a Tapas restaurant. In 2014, it regained its original name (Vessel 11) and was transformed again, now in a gastro pub and event location.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier. Wilhelminaplein (uncut)
The area displayed here, with its high rises, was once a large harbour complex with its docks, quays and ‘vemen’ (storage buildings). Mainly due to the containerization of sea freight, in a giant transformative gesture, these facilities were either razed, filled in, redeveloped or moved to the outer edge of the Rotterdam agglomeration.
On the left, some new inhabitants, the ‘usual Kop van Zuid suspects’, are on display here: the Maastoren (Dam & Partners architects, 2010), Wihelminatoren (Zwarts en Jansma, 1998), Wilheminahof-District court, and Internal Revenue Service (Kraaijvanger, 1997).
Central and on the right: the Belvédère (Renzo Piano) with an Italian restaurant in the plinth (good pasta, wacky messages) and De Rotterdam 'vertical city' (Koolhaas/OMA, 2013).
This is number 731 of Rotterdam architecture and number 32 of Fish-eyed.
Europe, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam. Leuvehaven, Pontoonbridge, Ships (cut from B&T)
The Rotterdam Leuvehaven has a very long history. After the works of 1609, also large ships could also enter the port, like the ones of the ‘Oost-Indische compagnie’. Thru the rapid development of the city in the 19th century, the harbor lost its function for large sea going ships in two steps. After the 1800 realization of the Leuvebrug near the Wijnkoophaven, ships could use the harbour up to that point. In 1859 the construction of the Nieuwe Leuvebrug made access to enter the entire Leuvehaven with large seas going ships impossible. The Leuvehaven became a river port for inland traffic due to that. It retained that function until the 80s of the previous century and is mainly used by the Havenmuseum now.
Shown here is the long walkway / pontoon bridge that crosses the old harbour and offers access to the vessels and cranes of the Harbour museum. The highrise in the BG is 'De Leuve' office building (H.D. Bakker, 1958) on the corner of the Witte de Withstraat.
