Shown here is a façade of the Dutch Foto museum, once the Las Palmas veem. It starerd its life as the technical workshop building of the Holland Amerika Lijn(HAL). After the HAL stopped its transatlantic operations the building was used as a veem (hardour storage facility) for products from the Canary Islands, hence it’s name.

It was designed in 1952 by Rotterdam functionalist / modernist architects pur sang Van den Broek & Bakema. It’s a typical and famous example of het ’Nieuwe Bouwen’. The 2009 renovation (and the ‘UFO’) was designed by Benthem Crouwel.

Before refurbishement the building looked like this (in 2005): here.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnhaven, Terraforming, Machines (slightly cut from B & L)

As I wrote earlier, the Rijnhaven is being redeveloped. This harbour was created in 1895 to offer shelter for Rhine vessels (rijnaken), when during the winter these vessels could not operate due to freezing of the rivers.

After the creation of the harbour, the transit freight traffic to Rotterdam continued to increase and the new Rijnhaven was made suitable for large sea-going vessels by deepening it. As planned, the Rijnhaven became an important port for the transhipment of bulk goods 'on stream' - the sea-going vessels were moored on buoys, separate from the quay and their cargo was directly moved to rhine ships. In de 70/80s of the last century, the Rijnhaven lost its transhipment function and was brought back to its old function. In 2015, the rhine ship berths were moved to, among others, the Maashaven. Enabling the redevelopment of the old harbour.

It will be partly (30%) filled up (pure terraforming) to enable the realization of amongst others an office/apartment building strip with up to 200m high edifices, called the 'Skyline Posthumalaan' with an adjacent park and city beach. And there will be the floating Rijnhavenpark too here. Shown here are works for that park – in this case floating terraforming.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Maassluis , Steendijkpolder, Metro station, Waterweg torens (cut from B&T)

The former 'Hoekse Lijn' (the NS railway line Rottedam-Hoek van Holland) has been converted to light rail and is an integral part of the Rotterdam metro system in 2019. The line is exploited by the municipal public transit organization 'RET'.

A website about the long history of the conversion is here.

By the way in the nineties, there was the Spitspendel that can be seen as a precursor of this transformation. The trains used were Sprinters (SGM) adapted/stripped for mass transit. This service only ran for a year (1994).

The brutalist-looking residential highrises on the left are the Waterwegtorens, with the 21-floor Jacob Roggeveentoren in front (2007, architect: Cees Reijers, developer-owner: MaasDelta Groep).

Like the other line stations, Steendijkpolder was designed by Marc Verheijen of Municipal Works Rotterdam (Gemeentewerken Rotterdam). He used colours to create stylistic unity. Along the line, he presents the voyager with different shades of yellow. Steendijkpolder is one the last stations before the terminus Hoek van Holland Strand (Beach). It’s approaching the ‘sunset’ colour of that station.

Our stop in Steendijkpolder wasn't planned. We had to change metro/trains. Our´s and the one that followed had problems with their complex electronic system. A bad weekend for the RET: on Saturday, two trams had already lost their pantographs. And a black eye for Bombardier, the manufacturer of both the metros and the trams.

This is number 34 of the new Metro stations album.

Large parts of Maasvlakte 2 are still under development and will be for a long time.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Sscheepmakershaven, Red Apple, and other high rises (uncut)

The Scheepmahershaven flanked by the result of the Rotterdam high-rise policy.

More about this policy: In the 80s it had become evident that the strictly functionalistic urban design of the city centre of post-2nd WW Rotterdam didn't cut it any more. In the first post-war decades, it did enhance functionality, offering a clear break from the congestion and other development problems of the pre-war city centre. And its morphology offered the symbolism of a brave new world.

But due to the post-war social-economic boom and the rise of consumerism, the strict segregation of living, business and administration made the city's heart feel like a place that didn't seem to live and breathe.

It was simply too high on business and too low on living and recreation. One of the programs to rectify this was the R'dam high-rise policy - the insertion of a series of high-density up-market apartment buildings in and near the city centre. The Red Apple (KCAP Architecten & Jan des Bouvrie) is one of them. Apart from the verticalism, a prominent design feature of the Red Apple is the red aluminium facade cladding.

Left of the Red Apple is the Scheepmakerstoren,

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Coolsingel, Donner (slightly cut from all sides).

The brick façade on display here belongs to the former Rotterdamsche Bankvereeniging (Robaver, later merged into ABN/AMRO) in the centre of Rotterdam.

It was designed in ‘tranditionalist modern’ style (reinforced concrete skeleton) (by H.F. Mertens and was the first major (re-)construction project in the city centre of Rotterdam after its destruction in May 1940 (WW2). Construction was started in 1941, but due to the general war-construction freeze, it was only completed in 1949.

The building wasn't well received. For instance, one of the Rotterdam newspaper wrote: “It was an unforgivable mistake by the designer of the new city plan to allow a bank building in a place where it is possible to turn the Coolsingel into a lifeless street at night. As lively as the Coolsingel may become in the future, this building will remain an ugly, dark place in the evening cityscape and even during the day it will prevent a smooth transition from shoppers to the Binnenweg and vice versa.” (Het Vrije Volk 11-12-1952)

The bottom level of the buildings is now used by the large bookstore Donner. The building is currently being incorporated in the Forum redevelopment plan.

windstill evening in the unesco world heritage site of kinderdijk, zuid holland, netherlands

Last night I was super excited. We were promised to get a lot of snow. So I packed my bags, looked for my warmest clothes and set my alarm. I wanted to be sure to be the first to set my steps in the snow. However snow did not came that early. So I was not the first. I was beaten by some deer. And that man on the bridge ... he will never know what he missed.
