Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Lombardijen, Spring blossom (slightly cut)

In these times of Corona you don’t go to a sound studio to make music, but just take an extended walk and talk, somewhat hindered by the 1,5 m distance.

Shot with the Lumix TZ57 during this walk- thru Lombardijen, a southern part of Rotterdam (yes, Rotterdam certainly has its green parts).

Number 11 of the In times of Corona album and 130 of Land-, sea-, river-, mountain-, and agriscapes and assorted green one.

This breakwater is part of the Brouwersdam, the seventh of the Dutch Delta Works. Started in 1965 and finished in 1971, it has closed off the connection between the North Sea and the Brouwershavense Gat, thus protecting the islands of the Dutch provinces of Zuid-Holland and Zeeland against major floods.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Coolsingel, Coolse Poort, Groosman & partners (uncut)

The ‘Coolse Poort’ office building (Rob van Erk (Groosman & Partners, 1979) is a Rotterdam landmark. Not in a strictly positive way. During the planning stage, the city council discussed the building and the underlying urbanistic concept. The post- WW2 ‘ wederopbouw’ (reconstruction) of the city was well underway and this had led to the construction a slew of high rise office buildings. It was part of the city’s initial high rise policy’, an essential part of the functionalistic city plan that was based on the separation of functions. Severely curtailing the livability of the city centre.

The discussion eventually led to an urbanistic policy shift through new zoning rules, which ordered the direct context of office high rises to be low rises with non-office and preferable recreational functions. In the case of the Coolse poort, 'De Veste' was realized next to it (demolished in 1995): a small-scale multiplex cinema ('Alhambra, the last years of its life a 'riksbioscoop' (all tickets 1,25 Euro)), a discotheque and two restaurants. A few years later, high-rise policy 2.0 was introduced, favouring high-rise apartment buildings over office ones and assuring a 'repopulation' of the city centre. A recent result of this policy is the previous post, the Karel Doorman, which is placed on top of a 'Wederopbouw' department store.

After the 'Coolse Poort' was constructed, the public knew what to do and called it the ‘Rode biet’ (Beet root) and the ‘Aubergine’ (Eggplant) because of the hues of the aluminium and glass panels in the façade.

As an element of the ongoing Hart 010 redevelopment plan, the building is being transformed while retaining the architecture from 1965-1990. The facade and plinths will be renewed according to the original design. The transformed building will provide hotel, office, and retail space.

This is number 744 of the Rotterdam architecture album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnhaven, Terraforming, Ground layering, Clay granules (uncut)

In the previous Rijnhaven redevelopment picture, I showed ground consolidation, the last phase of creating new land. What is shown here is the preparation of the new land to successfully grow plants (a park, in this case) by adding a layer of clay granules.

In the BG right, with its waterslide-like superstructure, is the Fenix 2 veem, which is being developed into the Landverhuizers (Emigration) museum.

This is number 21 of the Rijnhaven - the redevelopment album and 301 of Zwart/Wit.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Fall, Rotterdamse Munt, Esdoorn, Maple, Façade (slightly cut from B&T)

At the Rotterdamse Munt gardening project, it's fall.

The garden is tightly embedded in the Feijenoord urbanization on its eastern side. Where once the Rotterdam-Dordrecht main railway line dissected the then very much delipidated Feijenoord quarter, the railway was put underground (the Rotterdamse Munt is on top of the long tunnel), and the old buildings were torn down—urban renewal at its purest.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Blijdorp Zoo, Western Lowland Gorillas (slightly cut from all sides)

Shown here are Aya and her child Ajubu(=wonder). They are Western Lowland Gorillas. Aya (a daughter of deceased (2023) Bokito) was bothered by the growing group of visitors right before them. She effortlessly slung Ajubu over her shoulder and walked away,

About the Blijdorp Western Lowland Gorillas. After the death of Silverback Bokito, Blijdorp Zoo is ‘phasing out’ (tranferring them to other Zoos or their natural habitat) the western lowland gorillas. One of the reasons is that all the gorillas living in European Zoos belong to this group. It’s dicussed here: Blijdorp faseert gorilla’s uit: de wetenschap achter een lastige keuze. (sorry, only Dutch).

This is number 20 of the Blijdorp Zoo album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Leiden, Stationsplein, Highrises (slightly cut from B&T)

Leiden’s Stationsplein quarter has been radically transformed. The cafés and discos, where once the youth from Rijnsburg en Katwijk went to drink & fight, have been replaced by large-scale developments, in this case, The Lorentz (Neutelings Riedijk). The top part is an upscale apartment building, and in the dark red four-storey plinth, there are studios and commercial spaces (including Heineken’s head office) and a café. The ensemble is neo-modernist with a post-modern twist.

This is number 105 of Façades and 39 of Leiden.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Maasboulevard, High rises, Rhine cruise boat (slightly cut from T)

The high rises on display here are a direct consequence of Rotterdam's 'high rise policy'. What's that? In the 80s, it had become evident that the strictly functionalistic urban design of the city centre of post-2nd World War Rotterdam didn't cut it any more. In the first post-war decades, it did enhance functionality, offering a clear break from the congestion and other development problems of the pre-war city centre. And its morphology offered the symbolism of a brave new world. However, due to the post-war social-economic boom and the rise of consumerism, the strict segregation of living, business and administration made the city's heart feel like a place that didn't seem to live and breathe.

It was simply too high on business and too low on living and recreation. One program to rectify this was the R'dam high-rise policy, which involved the insertion of a series of high-density, up-market apartment buildings in and near the city centre.

The building in the middle is 'Terraced Tower' (OZ Architects, 2021), a mid- to high-rent residential tower.

On the right and behind it are the highrises of the Wijnhaveneilend with the 'Red Apple'. On the left is the Clubhouse Boompjes (under construction, Team V architects).

The ´Alena´Rhine cruise boat at the bottom of the frame offered a nice counterpoint to all this unbridled verticalism. ;-) To the right of its bow is the (of course, yellow) finish of the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Wilhelminapier, Fotomuseum (slightly cut from all sides)

The top of a side facade of the Nederlands Fotomuseum is shown here. The Dutch Photomuseum is in the former ‘Las Palmas’ veem (harbour storage facility), designed in 1952 by Rotterdam functionalist / modernist architects pur sang Van den Broek & Bakema. It’s a typical and famous example of the ’Nieuwe Bouwen’. The 2009 renovation (preparing it for its museal role) was designed by Benthem Crouwel.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Leuvehaven, Maritiem Buitenmuseum, Figee RH crane, Crane operator (uncut)

A Figee RH type (#12) electric harbour top crane. It was built in 1959. Other numbers: max load 18 tons, cabin height above ground level: 18 m, the top of the boom can be raised to 45 m). The red colour of the crane flags that it once was once used by Pakhoed/Seabrex. It is still operational as shown here, lifting what seems to be a compressor.

In the BG is Five55 /Blaak Office Tower (Murphy/Jahn architects). It is one of the Rotterdam landmarks. It has a remarkable history. It was designed by Helmut Jahn with Inbo and 3BN as participating partners It was commissioned by Credit Lyonnais and eventually became one of the seats of Fortis, once a large Dutch/Belgian insurance and banking conglomerate. During the 2008 credit crunch, it went down, almost taking one of her recent acquisitions, Dutch system bank ABN/AMRO with it. Ii was bailed out and restruc-tured/cut up by the Belgian and Dutch governments. And the building was sold. The current owner is German investment group KanAm Grund ‘ which converted it two years ago into a multi-tenant (bedrijfsverzamelgebouw) office building.

Shot with the good ol' Tamron 28-300 (EF mount) coupled with the Lumix GX9 thru a 'dumb' Urth mount adapter, so manually focused.
