Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Wijnhaven, V11, Lightship (slightly cut from L,T&B)
Back to Rotterdam for a little series of urban graphisms. Shown here is the top of the V11. A former lightship.
The history of two red lightships in Holland (Harlingen, check out the previous post) and Rotterdam) began when Trinity House (the UK ’Loodswezen’) decided first to automate their light ships. In the process, some ships were stripped of all internal walls and filled with Polyurethane (PUR) foam ). Later the ships were decommissioned altogether.
This Rotterdam one, Light Vessel 11 (now a ‘gastro pub’ and event location) was built in 1951 in Dartmouth (UK) and used on the south coast of Wales. After decommissioning, she was restored (1995 – 1999) in the Netherlands and used as a maritime café, and after that as a Tapas restaurant. In 2014, it regained its original name (Vessel 11) and was transformed again, now in a gastro pub and event location.
This is number 702 of Rotterdam architecture and 1483 of Minimalisms/explicit Graphisms.
Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier. Wilhelminaplein (uncut)
The area displayed here, with its high rises, was once a large harbour complex with its docks, quays and ‘vemen’ (storage buildings). Mainly due to the containerization of sea freight, in a giant transformative gesture, these facilities were either razed, filled in, redeveloped or moved to the outer edge of the Rotterdam agglomeration.
On the left, some new inhabitants, the ‘usual Kop van Zuid suspects’, are on display here: the Maastoren (Dam & Partners architects, 2010), Wihelminatoren (Zwarts en Jansma, 1998), Wilheminahof-District court, and Internal Revenue Service (Kraaijvanger, 1997).
Central and on the right: the Belvédère (Renzo Piano) with an Italian restaurant in the plinth (good pasta, wacky messages) and De Rotterdam 'vertical city' (Koolhaas/OMA, 2013).
This is number 731 of Rotterdam architecture and number 32 of Fish-eyed.
Europe, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam. Leuvehaven, Pontoonbridge, Ships (cut from B&T)
The Rotterdam Leuvehaven has a very long history. After the works of 1609, also large ships could also enter the port, like the ones of the ‘Oost-Indische compagnie’. Thru the rapid development of the city in the 19th century, the harbor lost its function for large sea going ships in two steps. After the 1800 realization of the Leuvebrug near the Wijnkoophaven, ships could use the harbour up to that point. In 1859 the construction of the Nieuwe Leuvebrug made access to enter the entire Leuvehaven with large seas going ships impossible. The Leuvehaven became a river port for inland traffic due to that. It retained that function until the 80s of the previous century and is mainly used by the Havenmuseum now.
Shown here is the long walkway / pontoon bridge that crosses the old harbour and offers access to the vessels and cranes of the Harbour museum. The highrise in the BG is 'De Leuve' office building (H.D. Bakker, 1958) on the corner of the Witte de Withstraat.

Zuid-Holland -
A bulbous plant is a wintering crop by storing food in a bulb , underground or otherwise, in fact a spherical accumulation of fleshy leaves. These are generally monocotyledonous plants.
A number of bulbous plants are known as foods, such as onion and garlic . Other bulbous plants, the so-called flower bulbs, are grown for decoration, such as the tulip , the hyacinth , the daffodil and the blue grape . In the Netherlands in particular, the cultivation of ornamental bulbous plants is a considerable branch of activity.
In addition to bulbous plants for the garden, there are also bulbous plants that are grown especially for flowering indoors, such as Hippeastrum .

The Lijnbaan, designed by Van den Broek & Bakema architecten, is the main shopping street of Rotterdam. It was opened in 1953, as the main pedestrian street in the new shopping district, after the old one was completely destroyed during the 1940 bombing of Rotterdam. It’s a completely car-free zone and has been a testcase for numerous car-free shopping streets around the world.

This photo was taken in the woods of Warmond.
The bird is about the size of a blue tit. The glossy head looks very similar to the matthead, but the song is clearly different.
The two species are therefore considered twin species.
In spring and early summer, food consists mainly of insects, insect larvae, spiders and other small animals. Seeds are also on the menu from late summer onwards.
They nest in tree holes or other natural holes or in nest boxes.
The clutch consists of six to nine white eggs, which are marked with some brown spots.
The incubation period is approximately 13 days.

The Sand Motor is an innovative method for coastal protection. It is a huge volume of sand that has been applied along the coast of the province South-Holland at the city of Monster in 2011. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand naturally along of South-Holland coastline. It's like building with nature. The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually befully incorporated into the dunes and the beach. The coast will be broader and safer.

Europe, The Nethelands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Feijenoord, De Kuil, Dag van de Bouw, Heijmans (uncut > the LX7 aspect ratio switch set to 16:9')
This is a quintessentially Rotterdam picture. The town where according to a tired cliché "the shirts are sold with rolled up
sleeves" ;-)
During the 'Dag van de Bouw' construction sites in the Netherlands open their gates to the general public. In this case 'De Kuil' (Heijmans construction company). The event was well organized. Safety was king and the friendly guides provided valuable information about the building and the building process.
On the site of De Kuil, a long-ago demolished block of houses once was. In the BG of the pic are of course the high rises of the Wilhelminapier and the Kop van Zuid. When the work is done, the building complex will look like this: De Kuil - Hejmans and will include affordable housing.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Katendrecht, Katendrechts Hoofd, Maas, Splash bus landing point (slightly cut from B&T)
Shot at another Rotterdam former harbour (the 2e Katendrechts Haven) and another object which presence is counter-intuitive in a nautical context. It’s the amphibious Splash Bus at its Katendrechtse Hoofd launching point.
About this spot: after the Rotterdam harbour activities were moved to the outer ring of the Rotterdam agglomeration in the 80s, the Katendrecht quarter is, underwent a massive redevelopment. The 1e (first) Katendrechtse Haven was entirely filled-in, the 2e (second) partly and the former Hanno freight terminal was transformed. There are now terraced houses and apartment buildings and a school. Shown behind the Splash Bus are the Katendrechtse Hoofd high risess (KDV architecten, 2010).
In the BG is the good ol' EuroMast.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Binnenwegplein,Karel Doorman, residential building, Ibelings van Tilburg (uncut)
The Karel Doorman (during the planning stage called the ‘Linea Nova’) is a 16 story residential building. It’s realized on top of a functionalistic Rotterdam ‘wederopbouw’ icon, the Ter Meulen department store (designed in 1948 by Van den Broek & Bakema).
The building has a very light steel and wood structure because it rests on the foundation and the concrete skeleton of the '48 department store. It weighs only a fifth of what a traditional residential building would do. A large amount of pre-fab construction elements were used. Shown here are the roof garden, the right-hand tower of the building and the glass facade.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Wilhelminapier, Fotomuseum, Staircase, New Orleans (slightly cut from R)
Shown here is a façade of the Dutch Foto museum, once the Las Palmas veem. It starerd its life as the technical workshop building of the Holland Amerika Lijn(HAL). After the HAL stopped its transatlantic operations the building was used as a veem (hardour storage facility) for products from the Canary Islands, hence it’s name.
It was designed in 1952 by Rotterdam functionalist / modernist architects pur sang Van den Broek & Bakema. It’s a typical and famous example of het ’Nieuwe Bouwen’. The 2009 renovation (and the ‘UFO’) was designed by Benthem Crouwel.
Before refurbishement the building looked like this (in 2005): here.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Brielselaan, Maassilo, Elevator tower (uncut)
The building, now known as the Maassilo, was created in 1911 for the GEM (Graan Elevator Maatschappij). It is a former grain silo in Rotterdam's Maashaven. Some building elements have been used as an entertainment venue (Now & Wow Club) and event location since 2004. A business complex was opened on the end of the building in 2008, housing various creative entrepreneurs (amongst them a sound studio).
The oldest part of the silo building, primarily made of reinforced concrete, was completed in 1911 (design: J.P. Stok) and contained 128 silos with a total capacity of 20,000 tons of grain. A second part was finished in 1930 (design: Brinkman en Van der Vlugt, right next to the oldest part, and a final extension took place in 1951 (design: A.G. & J.D. Postma).
In 1986, 70 people still worked at Maashaven Silo BV, but that number subsequently dropped due to European policy measures. The facility was closed in 2002.
Around 2000, the grain storage was moved to a newer part of the port of Rotterdam.
Adjacent the brutalist silo is the former GEM office building with service apartment (1964. Design: Herman Haan). Which will be featured in the next post.
One of the elevator towers that transported the grain from rhine ships into the elevator building is shown here. And an art installation attached to it.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnhaven, Terraforming, Machines (slightly cut from B & L)
As I wrote earlier, the Rijnhaven is being redeveloped. This harbour was created in 1895 to offer shelter for Rhine vessels (rijnaken), when during the winter these vessels could not operate due to freezing of the rivers.
After the creation of the harbour, the transit freight traffic to Rotterdam continued to increase and the new Rijnhaven was made suitable for large sea-going vessels by deepening it. As planned, the Rijnhaven became an important port for the transhipment of bulk goods 'on stream' - the sea-going vessels were moored on buoys, separate from the quay and their cargo was directly moved to rhine ships. In de 70/80s of the last century, the Rijnhaven lost its transhipment function and was brought back to its old function. In 2015, the rhine ship berths were moved to, among others, the Maashaven. Enabling the redevelopment of the old harbour.
It will be partly (30%) filled up (pure terraforming) to enable the realization of amongst others an office/apartment building strip with up to 200m high edifices, called the 'Skyline Posthumalaan' with an adjacent park and city beach. And there will be the floating Rijnhavenpark too here. Shown here are works for that park – in this case floating terraforming.
