Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Maasboulevard, High rises, Rhine cruise boat (slightly cut from T)

The high rises on display here are a direct consequence of Rotterdam's 'high rise policy'. What's that? In the 80s, it had become evident that the strictly functionalistic urban design of the city centre of post-2nd World War Rotterdam didn't cut it any more. In the first post-war decades, it did enhance functionality, offering a clear break from the congestion and other development problems of the pre-war city centre. And its morphology offered the symbolism of a brave new world. However, due to the post-war social-economic boom and the rise of consumerism, the strict segregation of living, business and administration made the city's heart feel like a place that didn't seem to live and breathe.

It was simply too high on business and too low on living and recreation. One program to rectify this was the R'dam high-rise policy, which involved the insertion of a series of high-density, up-market apartment buildings in and near the city centre.

The building in the middle is 'Terraced Tower' (OZ Architects, 2021), a mid- to high-rent residential tower.

On the right and behind it are the highrises of the Wijnhaveneilend with the 'Red Apple'. On the left is the Clubhouse Boompjes (under construction, Team V architects).

The ´Alena´Rhine cruise boat at the bottom of the frame offered a nice counterpoint to all this unbridled verticalism. ;-) To the right of its bow is the (of course, yellow) finish of the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes.

This is number 746 of Rotterdam Architecture.

The top of a side facade of the Nederlands Fotomuseum is shown here. The Dutch Photomuseum is in the former ‘Las Palmas’ veem (harbour storage facility), designed in 1952 by Rotterdam functionalist / modernist architects pur sang Van den Broek & Bakema. It’s a typical and famous example of the ’Nieuwe Bouwen’. The 2009 renovation (preparing it for its museal role) was designed by Benthem Crouwel.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid-Holland, Maritiem District, Hertekade, Residential high rises, Façades, Balconies (slightly cut from B&T)

Shown here are three residential high-rise on the Rotterdam Boompjes. Shot from the Ibis bridge crossing the Scheepmakershaven. Over the past 15 years, this major Rotterdam thoroughfare has transformed - residential housing has made a comeback in the city centre, accompanied by, albeit small, balconies.

On the left: Terraced tower (OZ Architect, 2021), the high rises in the middle are 'Clubhouse Boompjes' (Team V Architectuur, 2025) and on the right is 'De Maas' office tower (Koldewijn-Drexhage, 1988).

The backstory about the return of residential housing in the city centre: In the 1980s, it became evident that the strictly functionalistic urban design of the post-World War II Rotterdam city centre no longer met the needs. In the first post-war decades, it did enhance functionality, offering a clear break from the congestion and other development problems of the pre-war city centre. And its morphology offered the symbolism of a brave new world. However, due to the 60s and 70s social-economic boom and the rise of consumerism, the strict segregation of living, business and administration made the city's heart feel like a place that didn't seem to live and breathe.

It was simply too high on business and too low on living and recreation. One of the programs to rectify this was the R'dam high-rise policy - the insertion of a series of high-density up-market apartment buildings in and near the city centre.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Park Schoonoord, Trees, Pond, person on a bench (uncut)

Park Schoonoord (literally: Park 'Beautiful place') is not one of the most well known Rotterdam parks. But arguably it is one of the most beautiful (and secluded) ones. It was designed by the landscape park designer and classicist architect Jan David Zocher and its history is a classic 19th century haute-bourgeoisie one: the first owners were harbour tycoons and bankers. Check it out: Park Schoonoord (alas only in Dutch).

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Katendrecht, Bundweg/Rijnhaven Zz, BayHouse, Shopping cart( cut from T)

This front part of the Buntweg/Rijnhaven Zz has disappeared. It was, of course, to be expected - the whole area between the Bundweg/Rijnhaven Zz is in redevelopment. De Bund will be created here.

The car repair shops and second-hand car dealers are gone. They stopped trading or moved to another part of town. On the right is the reflecion of Bayhouse.

Check out the visual history of the transformation of this street: here. It started with the vemen that lost their storage function in the mid-2000s.

This is number 19 of the Bundweg/Rijnhaven Zz album.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Rotterdam Zuid, Maastunnel.

Yesterday the good ol’ Maastunnel in Rotterdam had its 77th anniversary. To celebrate this, the tunnel for pedestrian (the lowest of the three tunnels the Maastunnel actually consists of) was transformed to a ‘Tunnel of Love’. Very much the same way as the Dommeltunnel during Eindhoven Glow festival (2011): the normal lighting is changed to black lighting and the wall and ceilings are covered with heart-shaped reflective stickers. In addition to the Dommeltunnel (shown: here ) in the Maastunnel thee pavement was covered with a black wooden walkway, also with the heart stickers. Which made the visual effect more immersive. (users of tripods beware: the wooden walkway vibrates due to the many visitors passing by - this shot was handheld). Both the Dommeltunnel and the Maastunnel were transformed by: Studio Vollaerszwart.

Considering the somewhat checkered reputation of the Maastunnel - before the installation of camera's and the permanent presence of security personnel some ten years ago, the pedestrian and cyclists tunnels were scary and 'socially unsafe'- so there's some irony in the transformation and its title.

Check out the soundtrack, it alas wasn’t part of the list of syrupy songs that were played in the tunnel: Dire Straits: Tunnel of love.

Number 12 of the Tunnel vision album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Betuwelijn, Catenary, Transmission tower (slightly cut from B&T)

The catenary infrastructure of the Betuwelijn. It is a 160 km freight-only rail line that connects the Maasvlakte (Rotterdam) with the Dutch-German border. It uses 25 kV voltage.

Behind it is a Tennet traditional trellised national grid high-voltage tower. It carries 380 kV powerlines.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Laan op Zuid, Parkstad, Laanhuizen, Laan op Zuid, (slightly cut from all sides)

Laanhuizen belongs to 'Parkstad', where the RET (Rotterdam’s municipal transport organization) remise used to be.

Another street in the Parkstad development is the Dreverhavenstraat. Dreverhaven was a character created by author F. Bordewijk (1884-1965). He is best known for his short novels Blokken ("Blocks", 1931), Knorrende Beesten ("Growling Animals", 1933) and Bint (1934)', later published together as a trilogy. It was followed by the longer works Rood Paleis ("Red Palace", 1936) and Karakter (1938, translated into English as Character in 1966.

Bordewijk’s compact style is known as ‘nieuwe zakelijkheid’ (new objectivity) and expressionism.

In the placement of the bricks of this façade, there are both Blokken (Blocks) to be discerned and perhaps Dreverhaven’s coarse character too. In the TV adaptation, it was 'incarnated' by Co van Dijk.

Design: Jeroen Geurst (Geurst & Schulze architecten), Joost Kühne (Architektenburo Kühne & Co), Endry van Velzen (De Nijl Architec-ten).

This is number 698 of Rotterdam architecture and 94 of Façades.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Hoek van Holland, Nieuwe Waterweg, Mega Caravan 2, Beach, People, Dogs (slightly cut from T)

After many overcast and cold days, the weather wasn't all that bad today, so it was busy on Hoek van Holland beach. The North Sea and the Nieuwe Waterweg, the gateway to the Port of Rotterdam, flank it.

Here is the Mega Caravan 2 on her way to Rostock, Germany. She’s a 14-year-old Korean heavy-load vessel fitted to transport pipelines. Her overall length is 163.8 meters, and her width is 42 meters. Cruising speed: 12 knots, and propulsion: s two 3.9 MW diesel engines. The backdrop is the ECT (European Container Terminal—Waalhaven).

Today (30 November, 2021) on the news: this coal-fired power station (one of biggest polluters of the Netherlands, build in 2015) will be closed, maybe as soon as within the next two months. Necessary for NL to be able to live up to the Paris Agreements. There's three more coal fired power stations to go.

The Sand Motor is an innovative method for coastal protection. It is a huge volume of sand that has been applied along the coast of the province South-Holland at Ter Heijde in 2011. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand naturally along of South-Holland coastline. The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually befully incorporated into the dunes and the beach. The coast will be broader and safer. Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Kunstmuseum, P.H. Berlage, Dick Braeckman, 5 B&W photos. People (uncut)

Walking thru the Kunstmuseum The Hague, formerly Gemeentemuseum The Hague) it is sometimes difficult to choose to focus on the delightful early modernist Berlagian flow of space and light or the artworks on display. Luckily there’s photography to balance things out and have it both ways, like in the pic shown here – a light court doing its magic.

Check out Hendrik van Leeuwen's text below to learn about Dirk Braeckman and this work. Thanx Hendrk, also for your narration during the visit to the museum.

“Dirk Braeckman (born in 1958 and closely associated with Ghent) felt that painting was not for him. Just as Odysseus was lured to the rocks by the song of the Sirens, an inner voice lured him to the darkroom of photography. To the magician's chamber that Dutch enthusiasts abbreviate to 'doka'. He felt at home there. Classical rules about tonal value, focus and composition were soon thrown overboard. He started painting with lamps and chemicals, in an increasingly larger format.

With him, every print has a life of its own. In the Kunstmuseum, five photos of the sea hang next to each other. All made from the same negative and yet the differences are enormous. "In my armchair, I often think about art and philosophy, but in the darkroom, I act impulsively," says Braeckman. "I want to surprise myself. Time and again. That is possible with this profession."

What drives a person? Dirk Braeckman does not want to know when he works, but he too must have core images from his youth that do not let him go. He tells us hesitantly about his father. “Unlike me, he was very sporty. He liked to dive deep into the sea. As a child, I often went with him. I would sit on the shore for hours waiting. Or worse, on a boat far out at sea. He didn’t notice it, but I never knew when he would surface again.””

This is number 309 of the Museum and 490 of interiors.
