During the 'Dag van de Bouw', construction sites in the Netherlands open their gates to the general public. In this case 'De Kuil' (a housing complex by Heijmans construction company). The event was well organized. Safety was king and the friendly guides provided valuable information about the building and the building process.
Cranes were omnipresent at the building site, and movable scaffolding too.
This is the last one of this Dag van de Bouw mini-series.
Shot with the Lumix LX7 (in 3>1 HDR mode) with the tiltable LVF2 electronic viewfinder mounted.
This is number 677 of Rotterdam Architecture.

Modernism is very different guises in Rotterdam's Kop van Zuid -- a large former harbour urban restructuring area. In the BG is the neo-modernist InHolland extension (by Erik van Egeraat associated architects, 2009), a small part of Cité student/starters tenement building (by Tangram architecten, 2010) and the post-modern UWV office (by OZP, 2009 ) in the FG.

Stena Line was represented again at the Rotterdam Port Days. The ferry company choose the Stena Transporter of the Hoek Van Holland - Killingholme (Lincolnshire, UK) service. It's a very utilitarian-looking cargo ferry, seemingly making a slight detour after leaving Hoek van Holland ;-) It was built by Samsung Heavy Industries (Geojje Shipyard, South Korea).

Geschiedenis

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Energiekwartier, Electriciteitsfabriek, Smoke/vapour.
The only trace of the Christiaan Zwanniken exhibition in this frame is the smoke and vapour produced by his ‘Nose patrol’ installation here and another installation. The main element is the glorious context of the exhibition - the upper stories of the gritty cathedral like industrial building of the Electriciteitsfabriek (EF). It’s a storage building (1928), though it’s sometimes called the “turbine hall”, of the The Hague municipal power station, from the time when it was still coal fired. The power station itself is still in operation, nowadays it’s gas-turbine based.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Blijdorp Zoo, Kroeskop pelikanen (cut from all sides except R)
The Dalmatian pelican (Kroespkop pelikaan, pelecanus crispus) is 160 to 180 cm long and has a wingspan of 270 to 350 cm. It resembles the pink pelican. In both pelican species, the plumage is predominantly white. The underside of the wings is almost entirely white, except for the edges of the flight feathers. In the pink pelican, the arm and hand feathers are entirely black, which makes the back of the underwing evenly black, while this black is absent in the Dalmatian pelican. The iris is light, and the feathers on the crown are messily curled (the pink pelican has a dark iris, the skin around the eye is pink, and there is a neat white crest). The legs are grey (flesh-coloured in the pink pelican). The throat pouch is orange-red (yellow in the pink pelican) and offers space for much food. The plumage is the same in both sexes.
The diet consists of fish, of which the animal needs at least 1 kg daily. The birds work together during the hunt by swimming in a semi-circle and thus herding the fish together, after which they scoop them up. In fresh water, the main fish are carp, perch, roach, rudd and pike, and in salt and brackish water, eel, mullet, gobies and shrimps. (Source: wiki)

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Dakendagen, WTC roof & facade (slightly cut from all sides)
The history of Rotterdam WTC goes back to 1958, the year the first Rotterdam Beurs (trade hall) was founded. The bottom part of the edifice was designed by J.F. Staal and realized between 1937 and 1940. It’s roof features 21.000 small round windows. It was damaged during the WW2 bombardment of May 1940 but could be repaired. In 1986 an elliptical shaped glass tower (van Erk/Verbeek, 1986) was placed on top of it. (text source: Rotterdamse Dakendagen).
The space under the roof is called the Rotterdam Hall. It used to be the central space - the merchant's exchange was located here, with amongst others the shipping exchange and the insurance exchange. The exchanges are all digitized/virtualized now and the Rotterdam Hall is currently used for conventions, conferences etc.
About the Dakendagen: "in modern cities, miles of unused flat rooftops await a new function. In Rotterdam alone there’s over 18 square kilometres of unused flat roofs. That must change, and the rooftops can provide the space to realize the housing challenge, energy transition, climate change and inclusiveness in cities". Text: from the Dakendagen website.
A view thru the round windows from inside is: here.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Katendrecht, Landverhuizersmuseum, Viewing platform (slightly cut from T,L&R)
This is the top part of the San Francisco veem (harbour storage facility). It has undoubtedly been thru a lot. It was built for the HAL transatlantic shipping company in 1898, and its middle part was destroyed during WW2. The left part of the building (Fenix 1), amongst other things, was a temporary art exposition space and functions now as a basis for the FenixLofts luxury apartment building. Ah, the story of gentrification.
The right part (also known as Fenix 2, on display here) housed a Van Gend & Loos logistic hub, the Pinball museum, the ‘Circuscentrum op De Kaap’ (Codarts Circus Arts school) and last but not least, the Posse brasserie.
Its transformation (design Bureau Polderman and the Chinese MAD Architects) into the Landverhuizersmuseum (Emigration museum), which will commemorate the millions of emigrants who left Europe and Rotterdam in the nineteenth century, comparable with the Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp, another main European emigration port.
A year ago, it looked like this, with he the internal structure on display. The museum will be opened at the end of the year.
This is number 349 of the Urban Frontiers album.
Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam-Zuid, Kop van Zuid, In Holland (Eric van Egeraad) facade Cité (Tangram). (cut from all sides)
In the northern facade of the InHolland University for higher professional education (by Erik van Egeraat associated architects.,1997), the Cité student/starters tenement building (by Tangram architects, 2010) and a small part of the Internal revenue service building can be discerned The internal structure of the In Holland building can be seen here too.
All the buildings are of course elements of the 'Kop van Zuid' urban restructuring project in progress which has converted major parts of the old harbour area on the South bank of the Maas (with its defunct ports, warehouses and railway heads) into an integrated living, recreative and commercial service quarter. It’s comparable with the Docklands in London and the waterfront re-developments in Barcelona and New York.
Number 495 of the Rotterdam architecture album.
