Deputy District Attorney Matt Murphy is asking for the public's help in identifying the women, young men, and children in over a hundred photos seized from a Seattle storage locker rented by Rodney Alcala. If you know who these people are, contact Huntington Beach police detective Patrick Ellis, via phone at 714-375-5066, or e-mail at pellis@hbpd.org. Images were shot before July 1979.

The Worry Vessel is a self-supporting container built entirely of seed beads. It is designed to be a modular project which can incorporate some or all of the various modules of the design. It is entirely up to the beader to decide which, how many and what order the modules are added. Two of the modules are designed to rotate around a central core. A lid topped with a crystal rivoli closes The Worry Vessel.
Learn to use thread tension to control the rigidity of the structure. Learn to increase and decrease peyote to give the structure contours. Learn to use colour placements and embellishments to create interesting variations to an otherwise plain background. Use Cubic Right Angle Weave incorporating sparkling fire polished beads to weave one of the two rotating modules. Use netting techniques to add pearls to the second of the rotating modules.
The Worry Vessel is designed not only be functional as a container for all that is precious. The rotating modules are also designed to be somewhat of a worry vessel, not unlike worry beads, allowing you to rotate them as you contemplate what your next beading project should be.

The Zuiko 50-200 balances a lot better on the new E-30. Here it is with the EC-20. So now it's 400mm (or 800mm in 35mm terms). You can't hide.

The search for water was a daily trial for the villagers of Kamor-Liban in Mandera, Kenya.
This semi-arid region suffers from recurring droughts which are increasing in frequency and intensity due to environmental degradation and climate change.
Kamor-Liban had no permanent source of water, so villagers had to travel 10km to Lafey during dry seasons and droughts.
“Women would give their jerrycans to travellers on the bus to bring back water. We had to beg for water. Some jerrycans were abandoned in Lafey and never came back,” said Hamara Mohamood, a fifty-year-old mother of eight.
Children were also sent to Lafey to fetch water on donkey-back, taking up to 7 hours.
Now this one's an HDR, but just barely. I always shoot RAW, usually so I'm not messing about worrying about White Balance or whether the camera is set for Adobe sRGB I or IIIa. Things like that are where RAW really shines.
Another nifty thing about RAW is the latitude it gives for fooling around with the picture. This shot was composed as a single exposure and I moved on. Here at home, nearly a week later I decide I should have taken an HDR here. Well, here's the trick.
I can adjust the exposure value by about 2EV either way without really harming the image that much due to the sheer amount of data in there. So, I saved the image as a TIFF, then pushed the EV up 1.00, and saved it. Next I pushed it down to -1.00EV and saved that file. The next step was to perform my usual comine, HDR and tone map in Photomatix.
Photoshop was brought in to tweak the levels a wee bit (I don't like Photomatix's default output) and then I Ortonized the final image.
The colours in the trees and the chopped wood really stand out more after the simplified HDR treatment.
The campfire itself? It was sitting there at the top of the Falls (Hilton Falls) and we didn't see anyone tend to it while we were there. We were there for four hours. Kinda makes me wonder... I mean, it's in a nice safe firepit and all, but don't Conservation officials normally discourage this type of thing?
