For the Crazy Tuesday theme of a spoonful
They’re actually ‘not to worry’ dolls - Guatemalan maybe? The child is supposed to give their worry to the doll to take the worry away.
More "Wildlife in Winter": a Mule Deer buck was working very hard to keep his does under control. They would wander off in different directions, as seen here, and he was constantly herding them back together, hoping to get lucky.
Meanwhile, he had to keep watch for rival bucks - there had been a big, battle scarred veteran in the area although I didn't see him that day - and there I was, on foot, with my tripod and long lens, doing my best to appear innocuous.
I was lucky that he paid more attention to the other deer than to me. Soft bright light and fluffy snow falling created a wintry feel to the scene. When he had finally had enough of me and moved his harem of about half a dozen does, many of them with last season's fawns, farther up into the hills, I decided to call it a day. Animals have a right to privacy, too. Or at least a stress-free space where they don't have to worry about human proximity.

I heard a bump on the window and went outside to see this hummingbird on its side. I gently picked it up and set it down. It opened its eyes, sat for awhile.
when I went to see how it was doing it said adios and took flight.

The biggest of the LaSalle County cold air funnels on 7/20 really began to take on an impressive shape when it was at it's largest, as can be seen here. At one point, it looked as if it would touch town, it was so close. While it was roping out, it came the closest to touching, probably as close as 300 feet. It still remained in a rope stage when it became obscured by a rain curtain. Despite what it looks like here, no sirens went off, and it was never much of a threat.

So, picture this: day three of the W Trail, and I'm chilling in French Valley. Boom! There it is – the French Glacier, hanging out on the west side of this gnarly mountain called Cerro Paine Grande. This beast is, like, 10,006 feet tall (3,050 meters, for all you metric folks). Crazy high!
Fast forward to today, day four, and guess what? I'm on the east side of that same mountain, feeling way closer than I probably should be. Those peaks look totally climbable, but trust me, they're not. These things are gonna be stalking me for the rest of the hike, I swear.
Speaking of stalking, turns out Cerro Paine Grande is the highest peak in Torres del Paine National Park, and apparently one of the biggest climbing bummers in Patagonia. It's got this giant glacier on top that's basically permanently hiding under a cloud blanket, and the wind never seems to take a vacation on that ice and rock monster.
On the bright side, the west side's got some pretty sweet hanging glaciers, and French Valley offers a front-row seat to a whole lot of epic avalanches (don't worry, I watched from a safe distance!). This whole mountain range is actually four separate peaks – Cumbre Principal (the main one, obvi), Punta Bariloche, Cima Central, and Cima Norte. You can see them all from the west and east sides of the park, but let's be honest, the views from here (east) are way more dramatic.
And speaking of dramatic views, the best spots to check out Paine Grande are the Pehoe Lake area and the Grey Lake/Grey Glacier area where I am now. Trust me, it's worth the hike!

As Samara munched happily on her favorite sushi roll, her delight was cut short by Belle’s soft sniffling. She turned her gaze from her plate to her best friend, Belle.
“What’s wrong?” Her eyes wide in worry. “Is it musty? Are they…crusty?” Her eyes darted from her friend’s tearful face and then down to the can of Vienna Sausages cupped safely in Belle’s hand as if she were holding a delicate jewel.
Belle’s exhaled heavily. “No….” Her cheeks flushed and soaked from her somber tears. Belle gazed longingly at the can of Vienna Sausages. “I just miss him.”
