Κομπολόι - Worry beads or kombolói - is a string of beads manipulated with one or two hands and used to pass time in Greek and Cypriot culture. An einem einzigen Abend hatten wir klare Sicht. Auf Sommarøy begann mein erstes Polarlicht - Aurora Boealis. Keine Bange, später am Abend wurde es noch viel viel besser.
We had a clear view in one evening. My first Northern Lights - Aurora Boealis - started on Sommarøy. Don't worry, it got a lot better later in the evening.

Tromsø ist mit 76.649 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2019) die achtgrößte Stadt Norwegens und die größte Stadt im Norden des Landes. Die Provinzverwaltung der Fylke Troms og Finnmark hat hier ebenso ihren Sitz wie der Arktische Rat.[2]
Der wichtigste Arbeitgeber ist das Universitätsklinikum in Nord-Norwegen (UNN) mit etwa 4.500 Angestellten. In Tromsø befinden sich eine Universität, die Norwegische Fischereihochschule, das Klima- und Umweltforschungszentrum Framsenteret und die Mack-Brauerei.
Geographie
Tromsø liegt 344 km Luftlinie nördlich des Polarkreises. Dies entspricht der geographischen Breite von Nord-Alaska. Tromsø beheimatet nicht nur die nördlichste Universität, sondern auch die nördlichste Kathedrale der Welt.
Tromsø ist mit einem administrativen Stadtgebiet von 2.558 km² (davon 1.434 km² auf dem Festland und 1.124 km² auf mehreren Inseln vor der Küste) die flächengrößte Stadt Norwegens.
Die Universität, der Flughafen und das Zentrum befinden sich auf der Insel Tromsøya. Zudem machen Schiffe auf der Hurtigruten im Hafen von Tromsø (UN/LOCODE NO TOS) Station.

Tromsø is a municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Tromsø.
Tromsø lies in Northern Norway. The 2,521-square-kilometre (973 sq mi) municipality is the 18th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Tromsø is the 9th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 71,590 (2014). The municipality's population density is 30.6 inhabitants per square kilometre (79/sq mi) and its population has increased by 15.9% over the last decade.[6][7] It is the largest urban area in Northern Norway and the third largest north of the Arctic Circle anywhere in the world (following Murmansk and Norilsk). Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the island of Tromsøya, 350 kilometres (217 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. In 2017, the city of Tromsø had a population of about 65,000 people spread out over Tromsøya and parts of Kvaløya and the mainland. The municipality is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. Tromsø is even milder than places much farther south of it elsewhere in the world, such as on the Hudson Bay and in Far East Russia, with the warm-water current allowing for both relatively mild winters and tree growth in spite of its very high latitude.
The city centre of Tromsø contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789. The city is a cultural centre for its region, with several festivals taking place in the summer. Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge of the electronica duo Röyksopp and Lene Marlin grew up and started their careers in Tromsø. Noted electronic musician Geir Jenssen also hails from Tromsø.

Tho I'm pretty sure that if I had only one day to live, I would spend most of it worrying.....
Somehow, all those branches hanging down in the freezing cold remind me of the feeling when you worry about someone and cannot really do anything about it...

They brought a smile to my face, especially as we move from the warm Summer months to the Winter months when everything will shut down before emerging again next year.

Havinng a splashing time celebrating my umpteenth bath day in the company of my eldest granddaughter, back in 2004. Of course there were no masks in those "happy days".
Tip of the day :
In order to achieve this astonishing effect, you’ll need an olympic-size bathtub with loads of suds (or snow if you're into¹ snow bathing) and you’ll also need a beautiful granddaughter! Now if you happen to be a beautiful granddaughter, then you may be looking for a granddad but, not to worry, they’re two a penny² these days.
The picture was taken by her father who was 'filling the gap', so to speak! I just titivated it a bit and called it mine; so it's not exactly a selfie but every bit as good as. It is therefore signed Kittymax & Son, he took the photo and I salvaged it but don't tell him I said that for heaven's sake!

These beautiful cows with their young ones were in a muddy field. They looked so glum ... I felt sorry for them. But they make a nice picture and so I painted them and told them we'd try to make them happier. Here's a wonderful piece of musical artistry for them (and you!) which I thought might help everyone who's finding the run up to the festive season not as joyful as they would wish. I hope my cows make you happier and the music as lovely as I find it.

Alfred E. Neuman immediately came to mind when I spotted this Northern Shoveler enjoying the morning light.
The Northern Shoveler:
The aptly named Northern Shoveler has a shovel-shaped bill that quickly sets it apart from other dabbling ducks. It is a medium-sized duck that tends to sit with its rear a bit higher out of the water almost like its bill is pulling its front half down.
Perhaps the most outwardly distinctive of the dabbling ducks thanks to its large spoon-shaped bill, the Northern Shoveler busily forages head down in shallow wetlands. Its uniquely shaped bill has comb-like projections along its edges, which filter out tiny crustaceans and seeds from the water.
If the bill doesn’t catch your eye, the male's blocky color palette sure will, with its bright white chest, rusty sides, and green head. The female is no less interesting with a giant orange bill and mottled brown plumage.
Northern Shovelers are monogamous and remain together longer than pairs of most other dabbling ducks. They form bonds on the wintering grounds and stay together until just before fall migration.
When flushed off the nest, a female Northern Shoveler often defecates on its eggs, apparently to deter predators.
The oldest recorded Northern Shoveler was a male, and at least 16 years, 7 months old when he was found in Nevada.

In a 1975 interview with the New York Times, MAD Magazine founder Harvey Kurtzman recalled an illustration of a grinning boy he’d spotted on a postcard in the early fifties: a “bumpkin portrait,” “part leering wiseacre, part happy-go-lucky kid.” It was captioned “What, Me Worry?”
That bumpkin became Alfred E. Neuman, MAD’s mascot, who turns sixty six this year—kind of. The impish, immutable redhead made his official debut in December 1956, when he appeared on the cover of MAD no. 30 as a write-in candidate for president. He’s appeared on almost every MAD cover since: possessing, spoofing, and spooking cultural icons with nothing more than a drowsy rictus.
