This Bald Eagle was on the lookout for food by Inverness Falls in the Whiteshell Provincial Park...
During one visit here, I came across approximately 15 Bald Eagles that were all hanging out together in the trees.... unfortunately they were scared off by a passing motorist before I could get close enough to get some good shots...

While driving along the shoreline by Pinawa I looked up and what did I see?
Here was Baldie sitting at the top of a tree...
Fortunately he was not all that interested in me and afforded me a minute or two to take a couple of shots before flying off...

the storm out at the lake.
35 degrees celsius during the day and winds peaking near 100 km/h during the storm.

While taking a few pictures of a group of Bohemian Waxwings in a tree.. a few of the birds would fly down to the ground to take up some snow for moisture (I gather).... here is one that has just taken a nice drink...

While on a drive thru the Whiteshell I spotted this large snapping turtle sunbathing on a rock, along the edge of the Rennie River...
I tried to get closer but he (I think it is a he) took notice of me and slowly slipped into the water...
Unfortunately you really can not get the scale of how big this boy is... but from tip of head to end of tail I would estimate he was almost 4' long... one big turtle... don't go swimming in the Rennie River...
I wanted to see a waterfall at the Whiteshell Provincial Park in Manitoba, Canada. I could not find the waterfall I was looking for. Instead, we went for the McGillivray Falls Trail. The water was low, and we could not see the waterfall. The trail was pretty with many large rocks.
This year I switched degrees from a microbiology degree to a biological sciences degree that combines micro, plants and animals. I've found it's a much better fit for my academic interests, as well as personal interests. This weekend I was able to go on a field trip to the Whiteshell where we did community sampling in a jack pine stand, a mixed wood forest and a black spruce bog. We stayed at Star Lake and this morning one of my bunk mates told me there was fog coming off the lake. I moved faster than I thought I could at 7am.

I had spotted this Red Tailed Hawk as it was about to pounce on a mouse in the tall grass along the #1 Highway... after doing so he decided to drop the mouse he had captured and flew up to this perch for a brief instance before taking off to a higher perch.. much further away...

During a drive out to Falcon Lake, looking for Bald Eagles, I came across this immature Bald Eagle situated at the top of this evergreen... he was quite hard to see with the trees in the background (unlike his older cousins... their white heads tend to give them away)...
A fair bit of cropping on this one, but I think in the end it turned out alright...

Part of my series on the closing of Caddy Lake Girl Guide Camp in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba. The Boathouse sits facing the lake. This is where campers could get canoes, kayak, and swimming equipment. I very clearly remember a rainy and windy summer day learning the "J stroke" here.

On the way to Falcon Lake I spotted a young deer that was resting (permanently) beside the highway... in the trees near the deer were many ravens and a young Bald Eagle... I stopped my vehicle about 100 yards past the Eagle and slowly got out and began trying to spot him in the trees... unfortunately all I could see were tree branches... then I looked up and right at the top of a tree about 30 feet away was this adult Bald Eagle,.. he stayed there for about 30 seconds before flying away... enough time for me to get a number of good shots... lucky me...

This Rock Pigeon was perched atop a wooded outcrop at the Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary in the Whiteshell Provincial Park...
Did you know... Pigeons can find their way home, even if released from a distant location blindfolded. They can navigate by sensing the earth’s magnetic fields, and perhaps also by using sound and smell. They can also use cues based on the position of the sun. (from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology)
