During a trip out to the Whiteshell I came across this Red Tailed Hawk that was some distance off the road sitting in a tree...
As i was about to take a shot he decided it was time to move on, but instead of flying away from me, he took off in my direction and I was able to get a few decent shots...

This one may take a little explaining... and maybe a good arguement for making the polar bear Canada's national animal...
During a trip out to West Hawk Lake looking for Bald Eagles I came across a family of Beavers on a small pond...
I watched the beavers for a couple of hours taking lots of pictures as they swam around and foraged for some food that they were stockpiling for the winter...
In this shot, Pa Beaver decided it was time to do a little mutual grooming... here he was behind Ma Beaver grooming her rear flank... (nothing x rated about this shot... honest).

While Whitetail are more than plentiful out at Pinawa year round, it is not that often that you see a young buck walking around outside of winter...
On this day this yound buck with those funny looking horns.. (evil looking I think) was more than willing to pose for the camera...
Part of my series on the closing of 70-year-old Caddy Lake Girl Guide Camp. Mermaid Lagoon was the lake-front beach at the camp. Here, the girls could swim during free time, but also learn a range of skills including swimming lessons, first aid, canoeing, and even, during special camps, sailing.

During a visit to Seven Sisters Falls, Stuart and I spent about an hour watching the pelicans come in and try to fish for dinner... unfortunately they are not very good at fishing... so the only decent shots were flight shots as they were coming in....

This American White Pelican was coming in for a landing at the falls by Seven Sisters Falls...
Did you know that American White Pelicans breed mainly on isolated islands in freshwater lakes, forages on inland marshes, lakes, or rivers, favoring shallows. Islands used for breeding are often 30 or more miles from foraging areas. During the nonbreeding season, American White Pelicans favor shallow coastal bays, inlets, and estuaries... (from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology).

Christmas Eve Owl
This Great Gray Owl presented me with an early Christmas Present...
He was extremely photogenic and cooperative.. despite the -35 degree wind chill, he hunted along the side of the road in front of me for a couple of hours allowing for a number of decent shots...
In this shot he had been sitting nicely in this tree when all of a sudden he lowered his head a bit and had this expression like he was laughing.... too funny..

Happy 2014, y'all!
This is my attempt to be (somewhat) creative. I like this quote. On the surface, it's nice, it's positive. But between the lines, it has a much deeper meaning; there's a much further ahead than just 2014.

This white tailed deer was well.. you get the picture... somewhere in the Whiteshell.... must have been good....
I spent another lovely at the Falcon Trails Resort in Whiteshell Provincial Park. I love the contrasts and similarities between my boreal home and this area.
The lakes are smaller and the rocks are older and bigger here, but sunsets are beautiful wherever you are.

This Bald Eagle was one of a few I saw this past weekend when on a drive out by the Whiteshell... in this picture he was getting ready to take off... he had enough of me hanging around...

On this dull overcast day, I was fortunate to come across another Great Gray Owl in the Lewis area....
Here he is nicely perched along the outer edge of a group of trees, as he was hunting for mice and voles along the tree line.

With the short days of winter, I haven't been doing much shooting (I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark...). I spotted this happy looking fellow (lady?) on my way home from Winnipeg in Whiteshell Provincial Park (sadly, it was very late in the day and the lighting was less than desirable) - if I get some time on the weekend, perhaps I'll head back and see if I can find some better light.

While out in eastern Manitoba looking for a last chance to see some Great Gray Owls, I came across a pair of Sandhill Cranes... this one not only posed nicely but when he flew off he gave me the opportunity for a number of decent flight shots...

Another shot from my evening at Falcon Lake a few weeks ago. It's amazing how the same sunset can create so many different scenes.

This immature Bald Eagle was one of a few I saw this past weekend when on a drive out by the Whiteshell...
Whiteshell Provincial Park was another day trip from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Whiteshell Provincial Park is approximately two hours from Winnipeg. As the park is so large, it was hard to decide which part to visit. We visited the beautiful Falcon Lake first before going to West Hawk Lake. Manitoba is famous for its beautiful lakes, and West Hawk Lake does not disappoint. The water is crystal clear, and the sandy beach looks inviting. There were many visitors. We walked around the lake for a short period. We stopped to ask for more information. I could not find any information centre but friendly locals tried to assist us.

This wiley old fox was captured as he hunted along the shore of a small pond near Falcon Lake manitoba...
At this moment he had stopped to take a good look at me as I was kneeling down to take his picture..

One of many Whitetail deer that call Pinawa home... you can very close to these guys (and gals) as they are quite comfortable around people...
This weekend I canoed with a friend up to Two Lake on the Mantario Canoe Route in the Mantario Wilderness Area, Whiteshell Provincial Park. (Bit of a mouthful, eh?)
Two Lake is a very small lake between One Lake and Three Lake. There was a much more spectacular sunset the night before, but I missed it because I was away from shore picking blueberries in the woods. Ah well, you can't get 'em all I guess.
I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked to, and none that are particularly great, but just for the sake of uploading something, here's one.

December 2012
While out for a drive in Eastern Manitoba right before Christmas, I happened to come across this Great Gray Owl...that was hunting for food along the side of the road...
Over the next while he proceeded to give me many great opportunities for photos as he hunted, captured, ate, rested and hunted some more,..
In this close up shot, he allowed me to get rather close as his attention was focused on the hunt and he really did not seem to care that I was there..
