This Great Gray Owl was perched in a tree, slightly hiding behind some branches.... he spent a little time here before flying down to see if he could catch a meal in the snow...

July 2013 - An American Bittern standing along the edge of a river in the Whiteshell... this Bittern hunted for frogs and tadpoles along the shore of the river for a good half hour while I watched from across the river... he eventually caught his fill and then flew off...

August 2013

The fifth shot in a small series of shots of this Blue Heron that posed oh so nicely for me....

We had noticed him flying across a river in the Whiteshell and landing on this rock as we stopped the vehicle... I got out and was able to slowly work my way down to the shore line and sit on a rock in the water about 100' across part of the river from this guy.... he seemed content, as he stayed there for about 15 minutes during which he displayed some interesting behaviours...

More to follow...

June 2011

On several occassions I have visited the falls by Seven Sisters... and usually there are a number of White Pelicans there trying to catch fish...

I have come to the conclusion that they are not very good at it (good enough I guess) as I can be there for over an hour and never see one catch a fish...

On this particular day however, the Pelican in the middle managed to catch a rather large sucker... and then the battle was on... for the next few seconds as he tried to get the fish in... the other pelicans were doing there best to remove it... the one on the lower left tried to grab the fishes tail and pull it out of the other pelicans mouth, unsuccessfully in the end...

November 2013

A rare glimpse of a dark coloured Red Fox...

I found this guy digging up a rabbit hole in the Whiteshell... he gave me a quick couple of glances before grabbing his meal and taking off for the woods.

I spotted this Red Fox, trying to dig out a rabbit hole to catch a meal, to which he was successful... His colouring is quite different for a Red Fox...

April 2013

My first actual posting of a Belted Kingfisher... not the best picture due to the proverbial branch in the way, but a clean shot of this bird that I have found very difficult to approach...

In this photo he was sitting in a pussy-willow tree above a small stream.

Spent a gorgeous evening with friends watching the timeless rush of water over the billion-year-old Canadian Shield rock. Rainbow Falls in Whiteshell Provincial Park is a great place for reflection.

In this picture this great gray was just in the process of taking off from his perch along the tree line, to make another plunge into the snow looking for a late lunch...

September 2013

White out looking for Bald Eagles I came across this little guy that was walking in the cut grass along the side of the highway...

I stopped a couple of 100 feet ahead of him and just sat down in the grass waiting for him to come my way... he spotted me and realizing that I was no threat just kept coming... he ended up running by me about 10 feet away and then turning into the woods, but in the process gave me an opportunity to get a few decent shots...

October 2015 - A Bald Eagle sitting regally in the Whiteshell.

September 2013

A close up of this fox that I had been watching in the Whiteshell.

He had found something to eat in the grass and after downing it, he stood there licking his lips before continuing to walk my way...

After a lovely 6 km hike around the Shield, yesterday, I managed to sneak down to the shoreline of Brereton Lake to catch the last flare of the sunset over the water.

December 2012

What an amazing experience I had back in December

It was cold (-20 celcius) with a wind chill (-30) and still I braved the cold to go look for Northern Hawk Owls, with the hope of maybe seeing a Great Gray...

I was quickly rewarded. I found this Great Gray that was sitting high up in a tree not far off the road... and over the course of the next couple of hours I photographed him in a variety of trees as well as hunting for mice...

In this picture he had actually flown down and landed in the snow about 20 feet directly in front of me.... he had caught a mouse and was checking to see if I was friend or foe.. after about a minute he must have decided I was no threat, and proceeded to eat the mouse before flying up to another tree... Here he is seen about to go down and bite into the mouse that is obscurred by the snow...

He did this twice more over the next while each time giving me some great shots.... when I got home I found that I had over 400 of this beauty....

This shot is straight out of camera - no adjusting no cropping... I was shooting with my 400mm lens and when he landed in front of me, this is all I could fit in the frame... the cropped/photoshopped pictures will follow in a few days..

A new edit and crop of an old photo from 2009...

While travelling thru the Whiteshell I was fortunate enough to come across this red fox that was walking along the cut grass beside the road...

I pulled over and got out of my vehicle and sat down on the edge of the road, about 100 feet ahead of him... he paid no attention to me but kept walking toward me until he got within about 20 feet, at which time he decided to turn around and go back the other way...

This Turkey Vulture was nicely posted on a birch tree stump not too far away from a deer carcass along the #1 highway.

April 2012

While out at Falcon Lake I came across this fox that was hunting along the side of a pond... he did not seem to really mind my presence as he remained about 40 feet or so away from me for about 5 minutes before moving on to the woods... in this shot he is sitting looking out at the pond, squinting in mid-morning sunshine.

December 2012

While out for a drive in Eastern Manitoba this past Sunday I happened to come across not one but two Great Gray Owls that were looking for food along the tree line.

Unfortunately the weather was completely overcast and cloudy, which did not allow for a higher shutter speed to catch any action shots... but I was able to get a number of decent stationary shots like this one...

February 2013

A very close up shot of a Great Gray Owl.... this guy was perched about 30' up in a tree and he allowed me to walk right under him and look up to get this shot....

September 2013

A parting shot... this fox that I had seen in the Whiteshell, made his way into the woods and was standing on a log, when he turned back to look at me once more before turning around and heading deeper into the woods...

November 2013 - A Bald Eagle sitting out in the midst of a light snow flurry

March 2011

While out looking for owls with a friend... we visited the town of Pinawa, where we were entertained by a lone male pine grosbeak perched along the roadside snowbank who was willing to pose for us in many different positions. As for the owls, we came across a few Northern Hawk Owls and a couple of Bald Eagles, but none of which were close enough to even try taking a picture... next time.

December 2012

While out for a drive in Eastern Manitoba right before Christmas, I happened to come across this Great Gray Owl...that was hunting for food along the side of the road...

Over the next while he proceeded to give me many great opportunities for photos as he hunted, captured, ate, rested and hunted some more,..

This shot was one of the initial ones from when I spotted him sitting somewhat behind a tree half in the morning sunshine...
