April 2013

While out in eastern Manitoba looking for a last chance to see some Great Gray Owls, I came across this Bald Eagle that decided to do a low fly over... giving me the opportunity to get a few snaps....

Christmas Eve Owl

This Great Gray Owl presented me with an early Christmas Present...

He was extremely photogenic and cooperative.. despite the -35 degree wind chill, he hunted along the side of the road in front of me for a couple of hours allowing for a number of decent shots...

In this shot he had plowed into the snow looking for a meal.. and before sticking his face into the snow to bite at his catch he would sit there and look around ensuring that he was safe on the ground...

Unlike years past, this year there seems to be an abundance of Great Gray Owls in Southern Manitoba where in years past you may have been lucky to see one all winter...

December 2012

What an amazing experience I had back in December

It was cold (-20 celcius) with a wind chill (-30) and still I braved the cold to go look for Northern Hawk Owls, with the hope of maybe seeing a Great Gray...

I was quickly rewarded. I found this Great Gray that was sitting high up in a tree not far off the road... and over the course of the next couple of hours I photographed him in a variety of trees as well as hunting for mice...

In this picture he had flown back up to the top of a tree to survery the landscape and to determine where he was going to hunt some more.... eventually he came back down and hunted some more giving me the opportunity to get many great shots...

This wiley old fox was captured as he hunted along the shore of a small pond near Falcon Lake manitoba...

At this moment he had stopped to take a good look at me as I was kneeling down to take his picture..

April 2013

Spring must be here... as this day, was the first day that I came across a woodchuck... not one mind you but several in the area of Lewis, Manitoba....

This fellow was sitting cautiously not too far from his den...

The silver lining of pandemic travel restrictions has been a lot more time spent with family and exploring my home province. Lyon's Lake has become our favourite spot this month. There's a short trail, and a few public docks for fishing. We've enjoyed bringing a few snacks and catching up in front of the water.

Sunrise on Falcon Lake Trails Resort in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

We went on a road trip today and covered over 400 km. Ventured into Ontario about 5 km and then returned to Manitoba and headed to Rainbow Falls. After leaving the "falls" and heading to Winnipeg we come acroos these two birds standing in the ditch. I have no idea what they are (maybe someone can help me out with identifying them). While stopped on the side of the highway a truck with three young people went by us and continued on for about 500 metres and then turned around and came back to us. They stopped to see if we were okay or needed help. Restored a bit of faith in the younger generation.

This chipmunk crawled out of the rocks and took this perch to overlook what was going on at the Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary, in the Whiteshell Provincial Park...

During a trip out to Pinawa, and friend and I came across a number of whitetailed deer in the townsite... a few of which looked like they just lost a snowball fight....

The deer have been feeding on the lower branches of trees, and as such have been having snow fall upon them from the upper branches...

The deer in Pinawa are extremely use to people and will come right up to you to see if you have food...

A quiet morning watching the fog roll in over the lake.

This red fox was totally focused on looking for mice... that he kept walking towards me without even noticing me... until he was about 15 feet away...

Here he paused as he evidently heard something off to the side in the grass...

This Great Gray Owl was perched regally atop a spruce tree overlook a field (his hunting grounds) near Lewis Manitoba. It's not often you get to get to see them against a clear blue sky...

April 2013

While travelling out in the area of Prawda, I came across a group of Wild Turkeys... definitely not the most photogenic birds, but they too deserve their 15 seconds of fame...

In this shot, this one was trying to escape the photographers view by running into some thick brush...

While staying at High Like with my wife last October, we were treated to some very wet and cold weather. Luckily we had a beautiful cabin with a gorgeous vantage point our over High Lake - the perfect place for reading a book and catching an afternoon nap.

The high contrast between the bright outdoors and dim indoor light meant that I needed to bracket my exposures for this image and then combine them together to make sure I had details both indoors and outdoors. I chose a very large aperture of f/1.8 for the exposures to give a shallow depth of field and allow the slippers (a great pair from Egli's Sheep Farm!) to stand out in the foreground. I also like the link between foreground and background colours in the image.

Great memories and a wonderful weekend!

One of the saddest stories of 2019, for me, is the fate of Caddy Lake Girl Guide Camp. Caddy turns 70 this year. And this fall, there was an announcement that the camp will close permanently. Caddy Lake Camp was a place where I, like many other Manitoban women, began to learn independence, teamwork, and a loving respect of the environment.

What guts me is that Caddy's closure was avoidable. This isn't a matter of shifting culture and declining enrollment: when regular camps run, they are full! Caddy's physical space is generally in great shape. Two capital projects are required: new drywall in the bathroom, and repairs to the foundation of the staff cabin. Those who run Caddy were not allowed to fundraise to pay for the repairs and were not allowed to run their regular programs this summer to generate revenue. Thus, the reason given for closing Caddy is financial.

I imagine one GoFundMe advertised to the camp's alumnae would have been enough to keep Caddy running for decades to come. But the people running Caddy weren't allowed even to attempt such a campaign. It seems as though the provincial Girl Guide council, based in Winnipeg, simply wanted to offload the responsibility of keeping the camp. 70 years on, I can only imagine how shocked the founders of Caddy Lake Girl Guide Camp would be to see their beautiful creation abandoned so cowardly.

In August, my sister and I visited the Caddy and had the place to ourselves. This photo is a view through a window into the lodge. I like the lonely and quiet mood to this, as it's how I felt that day: A place that should be filled with young, excited voices abandoned due to politics. I will have more in this series on Caddy in the weeks to come.

While out looking for owls with a friend... we visited the town of Pinawa, where we were entertained by a lone male pine grosbeak perched along the roadside snowbank who was willing to pose for us in many different positions. As for the owls, we came across a few Northern Hawk Owls and a couple of Bald Eagles, but none of which were close enough to even try taking a picture... next time.

This male White Pelican was one of many that could be found most afternoons swimming near the falls at Seven Sisters...

The pelicans tend to come in the late afternoon to feed for the night...

During breeding season, the males form a large hump on their upper beak as shown in this picture... usually by summer this hump has disappeared...

This Bald Eagle was on the lookout for food by Inverness Falls in the Whiteshell Provincial Park...

During one visit here, I came across approximately 15 Bald Eagles that were all hanging out together in the trees.... unfortunately they were scared off by a passing motorist before I could get close enough to get some good shots...

During a trip to Kenora I was fortunate enough to watch this Bald Eagle land to take advantage of some road kill... (just ouside the Whiteshell Provincial Park).

I have seen Eagles feeding on road kill before, but I have never been able to get all that close to get a really good shot.... until now...

He was very focused on the meal at hand and that allowed me to get fairly close and capture a number of shots...

November 2009

While driving thru Pinawa I came across this big buck that was on a rock pile on one side of the road... he was watching a small group of does on the other side... after I took a few snaps he decided i was not threat and started heading straight towards me and then on across the road to the does who then proceeded into the woods...

During a trip out to the Whiteshell I came across this Red Tailed Hawk that was some distance off the road sitting in a tree...

As i was about to take a shot he decided it was time to move on, but instead of flying away from me, he took off in my direction and I was able to get a few decent shots...

This one may take a little explaining... and maybe a good arguement for making the polar bear Canada's national animal...

During a trip out to West Hawk Lake looking for Bald Eagles I came across a family of Beavers on a small pond...

I watched the beavers for a couple of hours taking lots of pictures as they swam around and foraged for some food that they were stockpiling for the winter...

In this shot, Pa Beaver decided it was time to do a little mutual grooming... here he was behind Ma Beaver grooming her rear flank... (nothing x rated about this shot... honest).

While Whitetail are more than plentiful out at Pinawa year round, it is not that often that you see a young buck walking around outside of winter...

On this day this yound buck with those funny looking horns.. (evil looking I think) was more than willing to pose for the camera...

During a visit to Seven Sisters Falls, Stuart and I spent about an hour watching the pelicans come in and try to fish for dinner... unfortunately they are not very good at fishing... so the only decent shots were flight shots as they were coming in....

August 2010

This American White Pelican was coming in for a landing at the falls by Seven Sisters Falls...

Did you know that American White Pelicans breed mainly on isolated islands in freshwater lakes, forages on inland marshes, lakes, or rivers, favoring shallows. Islands used for breeding are often 30 or more miles from foraging areas. During the nonbreeding season, American White Pelicans favor shallow coastal bays, inlets, and estuaries... (from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology).

Happy 2014, y'all!

This is my attempt to be (somewhat) creative. I like this quote. On the surface, it's nice, it's positive. But between the lines, it has a much deeper meaning; there's a much further ahead than just 2014.
