Christmas Eve Owl
This Great Gray Owl presented me with an early Christmas Present...
He was extremely photogenic and cooperative.. despite the -35 degree wind chill, he hunted along the side of the road in front of me for a couple of hours allowing for a number of decent shots...
In this shot he had been sitting nicely in this tree doing a stretch when he suddenly looked up with this scowl like expression.... and his feathers still puffed out somewhat on his chest...

Pentax K-3, DA 50mm f1.8
A safety from earlier in the week. I had other plans this afternoon but I was very tired and when to bed and unfortunately slept too long to head outside to get anything new.

This young Bald Eagle was hiding in this tree... I did not even notice him until the other Eagle that i was focused on (feeding on a deer carcass on the ground) flew off... This fellow remained in the tree for several minutes allowing me to gradually get closer to get a better shot...

During a trip out to West Hawk Lake looking for Bald Eagles I came across a family of Beavers on a small pond...
I watched the beavers for a couple of hours taking lots of pictures as they swam around and foraged for some food that they were stockpiling for the winter...
In this shot, Ma and Pa Beaver decided it was time to do a little mutual grooming... here Pa beaver on the right was letting Ma know that she's the boss....

This white-tailed doe was standing on top of an outcrop in the whiteshell as I was taking the picture from below...
Happy to see the return of the geese and deer, must mean spring is here!

This Bald Eagle was on the lookout for food by Inverness Falls in the Whiteshell Provincial Park...
During one visit here, I came across approximately 15 Bald Eagles that were all hanging out together in the trees.... unfortunately they were scared off by a passing motorist before I could get close enough to get some good shots...

While driving along the shoreline by Pinawa I looked up and what did I see?
Here was Baldie sitting at the top of a tree...
Fortunately he was not all that interested in me and afforded me a minute or two to take a couple of shots before flying off...
Check out the large version for more detail...
the storm out at the lake.
35 degrees celsius during the day and winds peaking near 100 km/h during the storm.

While taking a few pictures of a group of Bohemian Waxwings in a tree.. a few of the birds would fly down to the ground to take up some snow for moisture (I gather).... here is one that has just taken a nice drink...

While on a drive thru the Whiteshell I spotted this large snapping turtle sunbathing on a rock, along the edge of the Rennie River...
I tried to get closer but he (I think it is a he) took notice of me and slowly slipped into the water...
Unfortunately you really can not get the scale of how big this boy is... but from tip of head to end of tail I would estimate he was almost 4' long... one big turtle... don't go swimming in the Rennie River...
I wanted to see a waterfall at the Whiteshell Provincial Park in Manitoba, Canada. I could not find the waterfall I was looking for. Instead, we went for the McGillivray Falls Trail. The water was low, and we could not see the waterfall. The trail was pretty with many large rocks.
This year I switched degrees from a microbiology degree to a biological sciences degree that combines micro, plants and animals. I've found it's a much better fit for my academic interests, as well as personal interests. This weekend I was able to go on a field trip to the Whiteshell where we did community sampling in a jack pine stand, a mixed wood forest and a black spruce bog. We stayed at Star Lake and this morning one of my bunk mates told me there was fog coming off the lake. I moved faster than I thought I could at 7am.
