This Bald Eagle was one of a few I saw this past weekend when on a drive out by the Whiteshell... in this picture he was just taking off from his perch on top of the tree...

This white-tailed doe was rather inquisitive during my trip thru the Whiteshell... she came within about 8 feet looking for food...
By chance while setting up for some sunrise photos I came across two otters swimming above Rainbow falls. The change in elevation between where I was standing below the falls, and above the falls gave me the perfect angle to photograph them from a comfortable stand. My only regret was that I used my backup camera for these which limited me. Definitely time to look at replacing my primary camera so my 50D become my backup for instances like this where I need to shoot in low light.

While on a trip out by Pinawa I spotted this White-tailed doe along with a yearling... the yearling took off into the adjacent woods as I approached, but the doe held her ground in the field and continued to feed on a small patch of green grass... Here she can be seen with a mouthful and then some..

This White-tailed Deer had been grazing in a field just outside of the town of Pinawa...
She allowed me to get close enough to get a number of close up shots like this one..

First time down at the cottage with my Digital SLR. Decided it was a fine evening to go take some photos. So I went for a drive to capture a little piece of the beauty in the most beautiful part of our province, the Whiteshell Provincial Park.
I was happy to see these iciles melting. I sent our visiting exchange student farther up the cliff to get some closer photos. Good thing he didn't fall!

On the way to Falcon Lake I spotted a young deer that was resting (permanently) beside the highway... in the trees near the deer were many ravens and a young Bald Eagle... I stopped my vehicle about 100 yards past the Eagle and slowly got out and began trying to spot him in the trees... unfortunately all I could see were tree branches... then I looked up and right at the top of a tree about 30 feet away was this adult Bald Eagle,.. he stayed there for about 30 seconds before flying away... enough time for me to get a number of good shots... lucky me...
This is a stitch of seven vertical photos taken from our camping spot on Two Lake, each with a 30 second exposure. They were combined using Hugin, and the final adjustments were added with GIMP. Apologies for the horrendous colour artifacts.

While driving along the shoreline by Pinawa I looked up and what did I see?
Here was Baldie sitting at the top of a tree...
Fortunately he was not all that interested in me and afforded me a minute or two to take a couple of shots before this shot when he took off...

This is a black spruce (Picea mariana) bog. Probably one of the most magical places I've been. When J.R. Tolkien was writing the Lord of the Rings books he contacted someone from Manitoba for a field guide on bogs - we listened to a much more elaborate story while sitting in this bog. And yes, we got wet feet.
I was lucky enough to spend Friday evening at the Falcon Trails Resort on Falcon Lake, Manitoba. It's a beautiful retreat, tucked into the Canadian Shield. Unlike my home on Lake Winnipeg, this area is dominated by massive granite outcroppings. I found myself on top of one of those watching the sunset over Falcon Lake. Not a bad way to spend a Friday night.

This American White Pelican was coming in for a landing at the falls by Seven Sisters Falls...
Did you know that American White Pelicans breed mainly on isolated islands in freshwater lakes, forages on inland marshes, lakes, or rivers, favoring shallows. Islands used for breeding are often 30 or more miles from foraging areas. During the nonbreeding season, American White Pelicans favor shallow coastal bays, inlets, and estuaries... (from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology).

During a trip out to West Hawk Lake looking for Bald Eagles I came across a family of Beavers on a small pond...
I watched the beavers for a couple of hours taking lots of pictures as they swam around and foraged for some food that they were stockpiling for the winter...
In this close-up picture, the male was keeping a close watch on me as he swam back and forth about 20 feet away from where I was perched on the shoreline... here he is coming in towards me for a closer look...

On this dull overcast day, I was fortunate to come across another Great Gray Owl in the Lewis area....
Here he is nicely perched along the outer edge of a group of trees, as he was hunting for mice and voles along the tree line.
