This Great Gray Owl was very hard to pick out from a distance, sitting on the edge of a group of bushes some distance from the road just outside of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba.. This shot was taken from about 150 feet away with a large mound of snow between us...
In this shot he is in the process of flying off to a new perch after being unsuccessful in trying to capture a vole.
As the temperatures begin to warm up and the crows are returning in number, these guys are becoming scarcer and harder to find... soon they will be gone until next winter... what a shame...

The mouth of the McGillvray River is a beautiful mix of different coloured grasses, shrubs and trees in the late fall.

This red fox was taking a moment to have a good scratch, while he was hunting for mice along the edge of a pond by Falcon Lake.

This is one of two does that I came across out by West Hawk Lake.... the deer there are quite tame and will approach people and vehicles as they are used to being fed.... this doe came to within 3 feet of me as I sat in my vehicle...

A re-edit of an old photo from a few years back... this white tailed deer was cleaning her nose one of the only ways she can...
April 2013
On this windy day, I had gone out to the Whiteshell with the hopes of seeing a fox... and at the end of the day I was finally rewarded with this fellow who was standing guard just outside of a den... (the entrance to which is just in front and to the right of the fox)..
I was able to get a couple of distant shots before he dove into the den for cover.

What an amazing experience I had back in December
It was cold (-20 celcius) with a wind chill (-30) and still I braved the cold to go look for Northern Hawk Owls, with the hope of maybe seeing a Great Gray...
I was quickly rewarded. I found this Great Gray that was sitting high up in a tree not far off the road... and over the course of the next couple of hours I photographed him in a variety of trees as well as hunting for mice...
In this picture he had actually flown down and landed in the snow about 20 feet directly in front of me.... he had caught a mouse and was checking to see if I was friend or foe.. after about a minute he must have decided I was no threat, and proceeded to eat the mouse before flying up to another tree... Here he is seen with the mouse in his beak... interesting to know that they do not tear apart the mouse, but rather swallow it whole... more to follow.
He did this twice more over the next while each time giving me some great shots.... when I got home I found that I had over 400 of this beauty....

This young Bald Eagle was perched a top this tree overlooking a field... as I was getting ready to take his picture he launched himself in the air and took off in the opposite direction...

This is the last of a series of shots of a Bald Eagle that was feeding on a deer carcas. This is a close up view of my favorite picture from the series of shots.
After trying to just pick pieces of meat... he raised his wings to give himself more leverage to pull off a piece of hide...

A new edit and crop of an old photo from 2009...
While travelling thru the Whiteshell I was fortunate enough to come across this red fox that was walking along the cut grass beside the road...
I pulled over and got out of my vehicle and sat down on the edge of the road, about 100 feet ahead of him... he paid no attention to me but kept walking toward me until he got within about 20 feet, at which time he decided to turn around and go back the other way...
A few more pictures to follow in coming days...

On a dull overcast day, I came across this Great Gray Owl north of Prawda, that was perched nicely atop this pine tree.... he allowed me to get quite close before eventually flying off to another perch on the far side of the field...

While out for a drive in Eastern Manitoba right before Christmas, I happened to come across this Great Gray Owl...that was hunting for food along the side of the road...
Over the next while he proceeded to give me many great opportunities for photos as he hunted, captured, ate, rested and hunted some more,..
In this close up shot, he was just launching himself from a tree to come down and try and capture some lunch...

This Northern Hawk Owl was one of only a couple NHOs that I actually came across to shoot this past winter... for one reason or another there seemed to be fewer around and those that I ran across always seemed to be much higher up in a tree (too high to get a decent shot)....

Part of my Caddy Lake series. My sister and I hiked up to the cliff where the camp hosts its bon fires and sing alongs, and this guy came out to inspect us. For a way down the path afterwards, he stayed about 10 feet ahead of us. When we paused in front of the lodge, it got close enough that I wondered if it would run over my foot. Hard to get a sharp shot between his fast movement and the low light.

This White-tailed doe was captured on the outskirts of Pinawa... where the deer have gotten so used to people that they can often been seen walking around the town site or even lying down on front yards...

August 2013
The first in a small series of shots of this Blue Heron that posed oh so nicely for me....
We had noticed him flying across a river in the Whiteshell and landing on this rock as we stopped the vehicle... I got out and was able to slowly work my way down to the shore line and sit on a rock in the water about 100' across part of the river from this guy.... he seemed content, as he stayed there for about 15 minutes during which he displayed some interesting behaviours...
In this shot he is starting to sun himself by fully extending out his right wing.
More to follow...

This male Pine Grosbeak was busy picking up seeds underneath a bird feeder in Elma, Manitoba.
One of the larger members of its family, the Pine Grosbeak is a bird of the boreal forests, found across northern Eurasia and North America, and south into the mountains of western Canada and the United States. A large, unwary finch, it makes periodic winter irruptions into southern Canada and northern United States. It is the largest and rarest of the "winter finches." ... This Bald Eagle was feeding on a deer carcass by the Whiteshell Provincial Park...
This Blue Heron caught my eye as I was driving thru the Whiteshell Provincial Park... normally rather skiddish, he allowed me to get out of the car and approach to the edge of the pond and capture a number of shots before flying off...
October 2011
This immature Bald Eagle was perched regally atop a tree in the Whiteshell...
These guys can be ofter hard to spot as their predominantly brown colour tends to blend in with the trees, as compared to their elders which are far more visible due to their distincitve while head and tail.

Another in the series of this Bald Eagle feeding on a deer carcas along the number 1 highway just outside the Whiteshell...
He allowed me to get quite close... somewhat distracted by the meal at hand...
October 2010
I had spotted this Red Tailed Hawk as it was about to pounce on a mouse in the tall grass along the #1 Highway... after doing so he decided to drop the mouse he had captured and flew up to this perch for a brief instance before taking off to a higher perch.. much further away...
March 2011
During my weekend drive into the Whiteshell I came across this big boy that was walking along the tree line... he was more than willing to pose for a few pictures... there were lots of deer at West Hawk Lake... mostly just foraging around trying to find food anywhere where the snow had melted...
At least a few times a year I make my way to Winnipeg for some reason or other (shopping, show, flying out of the airport, etc.). Whenever I have time I always like to drive the scenic route through Whiteshell Provincial Park. On the west side of the park is this spillway into Hanson (Hanson's?) Creek - I am fascinated by it and almost always stop to try, yet again, for that perfect image...

This American White Pelican was one of many that were hunting for suckers at Seven Sisters Falls back on this day... these pelicans spend their summers here on the lakes to breed.
Breeding on lakes throughout the northern Great Plains and mountain West, the American White Pelican is one of the largest birds in North America. It winters along the coasts, but breeds only inland. (from the website of the Cornell Lab lf Ornithology).

While out looking for owls with a friend... we visited the town of Pinawa, where we were entertained by a lone male pine grosbeak perched along the roadside snowbank who was willing to pose for us in many different positions. As for the owls, we came across a few Northern Hawk Owls and a couple of Bald Eagles, but none of which were close enough to even try taking a picture... next time.

During a trip out to Pinawa, and friend and I came across a number of whitetailed deer in the townsite... a few of which looked like they just lost a snowball fight....
The deer have been feeding on the lower branches of trees, and as such have been having snow fall upon them from the upper branches...
The deer in Pinawa are extremely use to people and will come right up to you to see if you have food...

While out in eastern Manitoba looking for a last chance to see some Great Gray Owls, I came across a pair of Sandhill Cranes... this one not only posed nicely but when he flew off he gave me the opportunity for a number of decent flight shots...

This White Pelican was one of many that could be found most afternoons swimming near the falls at Seven Sisters...
The pelicans tend to come in the late afternoon to feed for the night...
During breeding season, the males form a large hump on their upper beak as shown in this picture... usually by summer this hump has disappeared...

This is my first release of a photo of the Milkyway. This is one is titled "Milky Way Magic Over Jessica Lake" Taken this past August on the shores of Jessica Lake in the darkness of a moonless night. The timing had to be just right as the Milkyway core is only visible for part of the year, the moon couldn't be out, and the sky had to be cloud and smoke free. It was an amazing sight to see all the stars out in their magical glory.
