Weld dinner party for things wot I made then ate

Area high school students competed in the inaugural Carl Sandburg College Welding Competition held May 18 in Building G at the Main Campus in Galesburg. Teams from Galesburg, ROWVA, United, Monmouth-Roseville and Galva competed in the event.

Some of the coolest photos I've taken thus far.

This poster was up in the ladies room at AT&T Park!

This is a picture I took a couple months ago on the walk-over bridge. As you may tell, the focus is on the welded grill that is part of the bridge.

This blows my mind. Pipe sections are connected once they are placed. The black is the weld. Railroad ties sit under the pipe. Once set, pipes are x-rayed from above to check the welds.

With rear section complete I began work on a riding seat. After much noodling I found that a gokart seat is very well suited to the job. Here are a pair of tubular supports that will bolt onto the front and back of the bottom of the seat to make its angle adjustable. The widgets at the bottom will become top and bottom halves of a clamp for the aft pivoting tube. All machined here, ready for welding.

So this is my Sprocketphone, for want of a better title. My first welding attempt ever, really. The coolest one this gal made shaped like a heart (a real heart), with strings inside it you could reach in and pluck.
