To meet the growing demand for water, energy and food, we must find a balance between maintaining resources long term and maximising what we use. Visit the Netherlands Pavilion to immerse yourself in our miniature world to join the conversation on how we can connect minds to secure water, energy and food. We bring together innovations on the crossroads of circular water management, agriculture and food, and clean energy.
The Netherlands pavilion at Expo 2020 is designed as a biotope, or miniature circular climate system. Here we show how the water, energy and food sectors can be linked to develop innovative solutions for solving global challenges - even in the world’s most challenging climates. Enter this world, and smell, breathe and wonder. Let your senses experience the connection between water, energy and food.
We grow food, harvest water and generate electricity, all in a naturally controlled climate system. At the centre of the pavilion sits a giant green food cone. On the outside this vertical farm is covered with edible plants, the cold, dark and humid inside is perfect for growing mushrooms. A solar-powered Rainmaker turns desert air into a continuous supply of safe and clean water, while solar cells in the pavilion’s solar cells provide the Rainmaker with electricity. At the same time, these skylights allow sunlight into the pavilion, which the plants need for photosynthesis. The result is a perfectly circular miniature biosphere.

Met een paviljoen dat geen gebouw is maar een eigen biotoop en waarin circulair centraal staat, neemt Nederland deel aan de Expo 2020 Dubai. Een paviljoen als circulair klimaatsysteem zorgt voor een belevenis waarmee de zintuigen van dagjesmensen en zakelijke bezoekers worden geprikkeld. Het paviljoen is een van de hoogtepunten van de meerjarige Nederlandse campagne in de Golfregio, waarin de Nederlandse kennis en kunde op het gebied van water-energie-voedsel centraal staan.
Tussen 1 oktober 2021 en 31 maart 2022 is de 35e wereldtentoonstelling in Dubai. Het is de eerste wereldtentoonstelling in het Midden-Oosten. Onder het thema ‘Connecting minds, creating the future’ presenteren 191 deelnemende landen en organisaties ideeën, innovaties en technologieën.
De Nederlandse deelname heeft tot doel Nederlandse stakeholders uit de publieke en private sector een platform te bieden om zowel vooraf als tijdens de Dubai-EXPO hun netwerk en positie in de Golfregio te versterken.
