"The Van Nelle factory was built between 1925 and 1931. Its most striking feature is its huge glass façades. The building is currently a high-tech centre for design and communication that houses between 50 and 70 small and medium-sized businesses. The factory grounds still largely retain their original design. Among the most striking features are the glass aerial walkways that connect the factory buildings and the shipping office.

The factory was designed on the premise that a modern, transparent and healthy working environment in green surroundings would be good both for production and for workers' welfare.

The complex is the result of the radical application of a number of cultural and technical concepts dating from the early twentieth century. This led to a new, functional approach to architecture that enjoyed mass appeal right from the start."

Dokker Van, the small van version of the same model, can be specified with either one or two wide, sliding side doors and chiefly targets the needs of business customers, tradespeople and traders. In addition to being reliable and robust, its carrying capacity is among the segment’s best, while it also benefits from a carefully thought-through modular interior and economical fuel consumption.

All right, Volkswagen doesn't sell commercial vans in the United States, and it hasn't tried to since the U.S. import tariff on foreign commercial vehicles was enacted in 1963, but some car parts company - Mighty Auto Parts - actually took a Routan passenger van and converted it for commercial use.

I sense that Volkswagen may have an opportunity to get in on a market it has long since abandoned. This proves that people will buy a VW commercial vehicle in this country, and all Europe's #1 automaker has to do is rise to the challenge and offer trucks to prospective buyers. It could make them in their southern U.S. plant and in Mexico - which is exactly what Nissan does. Maybe you've noticed Nissan cargo vans out on the American road.

Maybe Volkswagen needs a midsize SUV to sell in These States, which it's preparing to produce in its Tennessee plant. But it needs trucks of a different sort too.
