SoroSuub Corporation Space Tug MOC

 

It started with inspiration from a scratch build by Adam Alpern aka @monsterpartywars, and I decided to take a shot at building his amazing Space Tug in Lego.

 

Adam was a great help, by sending me some different angles of his design, so I could build it properly 🙏.

 

I am very satisfied with the result and named it the ‘SoroSuub Corporation Space Tug’.

 

SoroSuub Corporation was a Sullust-based company which developed and manufactured a great variety of technological goods, from droids and sensors to weapons and vehicles.

 

I decided this would be the perfect, fictitious and non Canon, manufacturer of the Space Tug 😉.

Lochearnhead Games

A Tug o' war competition is common event at a Scottish Highland Games. This a team contest consisting of either five or eight members to each team and one coach. The coach will encourage the team to pull as and when required dependant on the opposing teams actions. The coach must be very alert to keep his team fully aware of the moves intended or to just hold awaiting the correct time to make a move. The competition will commence with the command from the judge `Pick up the rope`, thereupon the two teams move back until the rope is taught and the judge inserts the marker flag opposite the central marker on the rope. The teams thump their feet into the ground for firm hold and then lean back on the rope and the judge gives the command ` Pull` whereupon the two teams then pull with all their strength. The object is to pull with nearly straight arms and legs from as low a position as possible with all members of the team in unison. The length of the pull may vary but officially should be 12 feet which is measured by two markers on the rope each six feet from the centre. When either mark passes the stick placed in the ground by the judge at the central point of the rope when starting competition, the other side has won that pull. The teams then change ends and the best of three is the winner.

Tug O' War Competitions are held at many Highland Games throughout Scotland from May to September each year.

 

Here are the Rules as laid down by the Scottish Games Association:

1. Team to consist of five or eight members and one coach

2. Raised heels up to a maximum of ¼ inch (7mm) allowed on footwear, and footwear to be inspected prior to start of competition

3. Overall pull to be 12 feet and winner of each tie to be decided by best of three pulls

4. No hand over hand pulling allowed. Team members must go back with rope when pulling.

5. Anchorman to loop rope round one shoulder to secure rope as per style used at present. No knot is permitted on the rope end.

6. All team members to remain on their feet at all times, no hands are persistently allowed on the ground apart from the anchorman who is permitted to use one hand on the ground.

7. Draw for ties to take place prior to start of competition. Succeeding rounds to be redrawn at judges discretion.

8. Teams through coaches will be reminded of the rules prior to commencement of competition. Only coaches can consult with the judge and judges decision is final.

Pusher tug 'Kristin Poling' on the Hudson River painted in an attractive teal and white motif.

The Tug PEGASUS has assisted us many times in the past two years I've been with this unit; several times while reverse lightering to ships, once bringing the barge out of dry dock in Brooklyn, and several times putting into our yard in the Gowanus. Her crew must take a lot of pride in her upkeep because her paint is always resplenent. Here she was escorting us through the dredging zones in the Kills after assisting us in getting under way from KMI Staten Island with a load.

The tugboat Pegasus was built in 1907 as S. O. Co. No. 16, for the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, by the Skinner Shipbuilding Yard of Baltimore, Maryland. Tug Pegasus began life as one of a series of four sister tugs designed to serve waterside refineries and terminals of Standard Oil, docking ships, moving lighter barges of petroleum products, and serving as auxiliary fireboats when needed. In 1995 it was abandoned, underpowered and too decrepit for active service. Thanks to tugboat captain Pamela Hepburn, this maritime icon was saved from the scrapheap, put on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Tugboat Pegasus Preservation Project guided its transformation to the unique New York educational experience it is today. The Pegasus is now docked at the Hudson River Park on Pier 25 in Tribeca. There, the 105-year-old Pegasus offers regular free dockside tours and educational river trips teaching visitors about the New York harbor’s value as a rich natural habitat, as a historic waterway that shaped this city’s history, and as a thriving commercial port crucial to today’s economy. On the 21st August 2015 the Leto (2006, 41,748) is held in the Elbe by the Urag Unterweser Reederei tug Bremerhaven (1993) as the CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci (2010, 165,171 DWT) leaves Hamburg with the bow tug Bugsier 8 (2014) dropping the tow.

A motor tug and tender

Although built in Greenock by George Brown & Co at Garvel Shipyard, motor tug Garnock is an Irvine lass through and through.

Built in 1956 for the Irvine Harbour Company, Garnock assisted in the towing of large vessels using the Garnock Wharf, a private wharf serving the ICI explosives works at Ardeer, and was a familiar sight to many in the very harbour where she now sits.

Replacing the paddle tug George Brown, which had served the harbour since 1887, Garnock was the last operational tug to work at Irvine. She cost £40k to build and has a part-welded, part-riveted steel structure, and still has her original 8-cylinder Lister Blackstone engine, which gave her enough power to cope with larger vessels. Her hull and fittings are mainly original.

Another duty of Garnock was to dump faulty explosives at sea, and in February 1984, while doing so in the Firth of Clyde to the west of Ardrossan, an explosion ripped a hole in her stern. Assisted by Troon lifeboat, she was taken to Troon Harbour and was presented to the Scottish Maritime Museum later that same year.

Included on the National Register of Historic Vessels of the United Kingdom, Garnock is a fine example of a vessel designed specifically for service at Irvine, and for particular industrial concern. She is also thought to be the only tug preserved in Scotland.
