Canadian Forces tugs Glendale YTB641 and Glendyne YTB640 depart Esquimalt Harbour for an early morning escort. Both tugs have served CFB Esquimalt ably since 1975 and are to be replaced shortly with two new tugs.

With last-minute cancellations being something of a problem on Northern's Chester to Leeds route recently, I decided to take the earlier service today to guarantee making a lunch appointment with an old college mate coming down from Scotland.
In truth there was something of an incentive - an earlier arrival also meant I would likely see the 9.53am Hunslet Tilcon - Arcow Quarry (6M31) stone empties rolling through the centre road at Leeds, rather than miss it by a few minutes as has happened on other occasions. Oddly enough however, today, the freight was not its usual 'right-on-schedule' pass-through, but running 35 minutes behind time.
Anyhow, with apparently no other snappers around to witness the event (perhaps the grotty light and rainy conditions put them off), GBRf 'Tug' 60076 is captured here doing the honours and looking quite nicely turned out too. Eventual arrival at the quarry would be 13 minutes ahead of due time, thanks to a very generous schedule that normally sees the train looped at Kirkstall for almost 40 minutes.
Comments switched off for this one, thanks.

I often meet up with my friend who also has two Aussies for a play date. My two, Tug and Della, are on the left and Liz's dogs, Brooke and Ryder are on the right. Della, Brooke and Ryder are all typical Aussies, interested in the ball or a frisbee. Tug however marches to the beat of his own drum. I think this shot really shows how different he is. Brooke and Ryder are watching their mom, Della is watching me and who knows what Tug is watching!!!
Tug "Schwartenbek", IMO 8865652 (build in the year 1968) from the Netherlands, moored at the "Thiessenkai" of Kiel, Germany.
The Murco distribution depot at Theale currently only receives deliveries from Lindsey or Humber oil refineries on an infrequent basis (with the bulk coming from Robeston in Pembrokeshire) and the timing of the return empties varies. Unfortunately on this occasion it didn't run late enough in the afternoon to avoid backlighting south of Leamington, and compounded that problem by running 45 mins early north of Didcot
60015 still makes a fine sight passing Twyford Bridge with the the village of Kings Sutton in the background hauling 6E45, the 13:06 Theale - Humber Oil Refinery

The Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat:
If you offer him pheasant he would rather have grouse.
If you put him in a house he would much prefer a flat,
If you put him in a flat then he'd rather have a house.
If you set him on a mouse then he only wants a rat,
If you set him on a rat then he'd rather chase a mouse.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat—
And there isn't any call for me to shout it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there's no doing anything about it!
The Rum Tum Tugger is a terrible bore:
When you let him in, then he wants to be out;
He's always on the wrong side of every door,
And as soon as he's at home, then he'd like to get about.
He likes to lie in the bureau drawer,
But he makes such a fuss if he can't get out.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat—
And there isn't any use for you to doubt it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there's no doing anything about it!
The Rum Tum Tugger is a curious beast:
His disobliging ways are a matter of habit.
If you offer him fish then he always wants a feast;
When there isn't any fish then he won't eat rabbit.
If you offer him cream then he sniffs and sneers,
For he only likes what he finds for himself;
So you'll catch him in it right up to the ears,
If you put it away on the larder shelf.
The Rum Tum Tugger is artful and knowing,
The Rum Tum Tugger doesn't care for a cuddle;
But he'll leap on your lap in the middle of your sewing,
For there's nothing he enjoys like a horrible muddle.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat—
And there isn't any need for me to spout it:
For he will do
As he do do
And theres no doing anything about it! ~ ~ TS Eliot.

This specialized tug is outfitted for tanker escort services, ship handling, firefighting, as well as, emergency, and spill response in Alaskan waters. I’m guessing it was down in Washington for maintenance. That or it winters in Puget Sound.
That is Hat Island in the background.

It has always amazed me the power these little boats have. They really are the work horse of the seas.
The tug, Hallett, spends the winter out of the waters of the Rainy River, staying high and dry before getting plopped back in the river. Hallet was used in transporting logs from various collection sites in the Rainy Lake and bringing them to the mills in Fort Frances and International Falls.

GBRf Tug 60085 puts down the power on the climb out of Wakefield with a fully loaded Biomass replenishment for Drax. Passing the remains of Oakenshaw Junction, where, through the trees to the left is the spur from the L&Y up to the once very busy London - Scotland Midland Main Line, now just a truncated freight branch.
I’ve tried to open up the traditional Oakenshaw view by taking a set of vertical frames and constructing in Photoshop a wide winter panorama.

It's good to meet old friend 6H43 again, even if she is running a bit later these days. And yesterday, in the capable hands of DBS Tug 60017, she sure-footedly tops the rise at Guide Bridge with the 11.10 Pendleton - Tunstead Sidings, and makes ready for the sinuous curves through the station.
My first visit to Guide Bridge since the late 70s / early 80s when the class 76s reigned supreme so it was good to see a few signs of the old railway still in situ, not least of which the original 1500v DC catenary masts. Guide Bridge station itself bears little resemblance to the one I visited back then although one or two of the original buildings just about survive. The original four platforms are now two, and the reverse curves essentially slew the old main-line to what used to be the slow-lines through the station.
