The tug Victory with the barge James L. Kuber loads pet coke from Detroit's waterfront. This is the last shipment to leave the controversial location where huge mounds of the product were stored illegally along the river. The rotting hulk of the once prestigious Michigan Central RR Depot rests in the background.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has ordered piles of petroleum coke being stored on the banks of the Detroit River be removed.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the mayor said Detroit Bulk Storage failed to remove all of the pet coke by Aug. 9, "as directed by a Correction Order issued by the City’s Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department."
The department cited Detroit Bulk Storage for being in violation of the Detroit property maintenance code and/or official zoning ordinance.
Bing has now ordered the pet coke be removed by Aug. 27.
The mayor also ordered that between now and Aug. 27, the pet coke must be covered by a tarp "to protect the public health and safety of our residents."
"We are keenly aware of the health concerns of our neighbouring residents and are firmly committed to resolving this situation as soon as possible," Bing said in a statement.
Last month, video of pet coke dust blowing off the piles and floating over the Detroit River surfaced on Youtube.

My first space model. It's a bit clunky now but I still like it, and indeed it's still in once piece on my shelf.

do you remember when you were a kid and played tug-o-war? I came across these students at the beach having a competition day so I decided to get in the middle of it for some shots. this team was pulled almost past the middle and in the end found the strength of pull back for the win. I've added a couple more below :)

This is Henry's favorite tug toy, which he carries everywhere in hopes someone will take him up on a nice game of tug.
Since he plays nicely, he gets frequent takers on the offer.

I knew if I just kept an eye on it, it would eventually form SOME sort of a letter. I'm calling it a cursive "o" - but I'm open to other interpretations.

Compared to the size of the freights, one or two little tug boats certainly have their work cut out for them. The tug that's pictured and one other were working on docking the Kopersand. Amazing how they work together to pull and push these freighters into tiny little spaces and do it so efficiently.
