When I first set up my tripod here, the sunflower field was a brilliant yellow in the setting sun, and it really caught my eye. As the sun set, the sky became pinker and the shadows became mellower, creating a tranquil scene...

On our way to a conference in Rotorua: I am sitting peacefully by the side of the lake with colleague and friend Jo Fowler: the scene is one of absolute tranquility - we are reluctant to leave.

Yet on June 10th 1886, shortly after midnight, earthquakes are felt in Te Wairoa and Rotorua. The area is renowned for tremors and no-one is too worried. Residents sleep blissfully unaware of the impending danger.

Around 1:30am there is a violent earthquake followed by the sound of an explosion. Sleepy residents look in terror across the lake to see Tarawera's Wahanga dome , exploding into life. The eruption cloud was about 9.5 km high and easily visible, being lit up by the mountain's continuing eruption and accompanying lightning storm.

For half an hour, the spell bound residents stare in awe at the scene before them, a few sense the danger and head toward the safety of nearby Rotorua. At 2.00am, there is a second explosion as the Ruawahia peak, and then the Tarawera peak erupt with all the fury that mother nature can muster.

So loud was the second explosion, that it was heard in Christchurch over 800 kilometres south. In Wellington 400km south, locals believed that Russians were invading New Zealand by way of bombing. The amazing lightning storm above the second Tarawera eruption was visible as lights in the sky from New Zealand's South Island.

Eyewitnesses near the mountain reported that Mount Tarawera had split open, and that a huge column of fire could be seen shooting up into the air and forming a black cloud of smoke and ash. In fact, a 17km fissure had been created down the length of the Tarawera complex, and the top of the mountain was blown away into history.

Remember that sometimes beneath that calm exterior beats a mighty yet fluttery heart.

Sometimes a photo captures a feeling. Despite the busy drama of Conrail's crossing of the Alleghenies, somehow this shot of a westbound gliding downgrade at Portage, PA in late afternoon shadows, seems to offer tranquility. October 16, 1984

This was taken after Sam, another friend of Aliyah's fell over after tackling someone at the party. No editing for the sun flares, which. I'm proud of. Yay, kit lens doing good!

Only way I could get both the bench and tree in the scene was to take the shot at 10mm - hence the distortion of the bench and tree.

A tranquil moment from 2012. This was a little pool at the Getty Villa. Don't remember if it had a specific name but it was quite beautiful.

Our rented apartment has this magnificent view. It was irresistible, I had to take a 6-shot pano.

Hiking in the Zion Narrows is strenuous. The water is often murky and the bottom of the river is covered with round, basalt rocks about the size of bowling balls. This makes foot protection and use of trekking poles or a walking stick essential. However, capturing images like this make it all worthwhile.

...away from the iconic lighthouse.

It's hard to believe that 14 hours before I took this photo I was taking shots a few miles along the coast of crashing waves. Yesterday I was 30 feet above the sea and wiping spray from by lens.

I originally setup a few hundred metres away from this point. I couldn't even see this spot from where I was.

Whilst taking a long exposure I went wondering. I am glad because I think this is a beautiful spot.

I need better ND grads, but this is OK I think.
