It's always nice getting to go outside and take pictures. I'm really happy with how this shot came out and can truly say I'm getting better at editing and such.

I asked my partner what to title this after I was at a loss for words and so it became Tranquility.

A Winkle Brig 16 (what a great name for a type of boat - www.winklebrig.org/ ) sits peacefully on her mooring in Batson Creek on the Salcombe Estuary.

peace and quiet across still waters

“It is in your power to withdraw yourself whenever you desire. Perfect tranquility within consists in the good ordering of the mind,-- the realm of your own.”

― Marcus Aurelius

On our way to a conference in Rotorua: I am sitting peacefully by the side of the lake with colleague and friend Jo Fowler: the scene is one of absolute tranquility - we are reluctant to leave.

Yet on June 10th 1886, shortly after midnight, earthquakes are felt in Te Wairoa and Rotorua. The area is renowned for tremors and no-one is too worried. Residents sleep blissfully unaware of the impending danger.

Around 1:30am there is a violent earthquake followed by the sound of an explosion. Sleepy residents look in terror across the lake to see Tarawera's Wahanga dome , exploding into life. The eruption cloud was about 9.5 km high and easily visible, being lit up by the mountain's continuing eruption and accompanying lightning storm.

For half an hour, the spell bound residents stare in awe at the scene before them, a few sense the danger and head toward the safety of nearby Rotorua. At 2.00am, there is a second explosion as the Ruawahia peak, and then the Tarawera peak erupt with all the fury that mother nature can muster.

So loud was the second explosion, that it was heard in Christchurch over 800 kilometres south. In Wellington 400km south, locals believed that Russians were invading New Zealand by way of bombing. The amazing lightning storm above the second Tarawera eruption was visible as lights in the sky from New Zealand's South Island.

Eyewitnesses near the mountain reported that Mount Tarawera had split open, and that a huge column of fire could be seen shooting up into the air and forming a black cloud of smoke and ash. In fact, a 17km fissure had been created down the length of the Tarawera complex, and the top of the mountain was blown away into history.

Remember that sometimes beneath that calm exterior beats a mighty yet fluttery heart.

A sunny Saturday at Freddie' Beach Bar.

When I first set up my tripod here, the sunflower field was a brilliant yellow in the setting sun, and it really caught my eye. As the sun set, the sky became pinker and the shadows became mellower, creating a tranquil scene...

My daughter Kirsty lives in a lovely Victorian house up in Holmfirth, Yorkshire called Claremont. But the pictures in this album are not of her house but a lovely garden that I'm sure the people of Surrey (England) go to see pretty often! We chose a quiet day when the children were in school, which meant that only more senior citizens and mum's with younger children were there, hence why it was so quiet.

Those here in the UK know that our weather can be fickle. We often say that we get four seasons in a day, or one season totally out of season.

The day I took the photographs in this album was such a day. The week before we had weather that would have been cold for winter all over the British Isles; then a few days later we now have have weather that's going to make the south of France look cold!

Silly weather, but it what makes us a set of islands that makes us talk about the weather a lot of the time!

On our way back from looking after our two granddaughters down in Eastleigh we thought we'd take advantage of our National Trust Life membership and take a short detour to a garden we know of but have never been to. Now we've been there it's going to be a regular place we go to.

It sits just inside the M25 motorway on close to the A3 near to Esher. The gardens go by the name of Claremont Landscape Gardens. At one time it housed a mausoleum to Princess Charlotte, a much loved lady, who sadly died in child birth at the very young age of twenty-one. Incredibly the mausoleum was demolished when the land that surrounds it was seeking planning permission for a housing development just after the end of the First World War! Thankfully it was never allowed to happen and this delightful garden is now one of our national treasures.

These photographs of the gardens and other things were taken on my iPhone. I will be taking my Canon 5D to the gardens sometime so see what I can capture there, but for now, these pictures will show the viewer just how lovely the gardens are.

A tranquil oasis just inside one of the busiest motorways in the world!

So calm and pretty, first thing in the morning.

I took this photo in the cold wood nearby my house. Me and my friend Ali was so cold afterwards that we sat us down on a fallen three and drank some warm chocolate.

Appreciate criticism comments so I and those who read them will take note, learn and become beter photographers.

After taking a few images of the blowholes doing their thing on Christmas Island, I was luky enough to enjoy a very tranquil period as the swell died down and the sun set

I was taken aback when I first spotted this.

Location

"Goa is India's smallest state by area and the fourth smallest by population. Located in South West India in the region known as the Konkan, it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north, and by Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast.

Renowned for its beaches, places of worship and world heritage architecture, Goa is visited by large numbers of international and domestic tourists each year. It also has rich flora and fauna, owing to its location on the Western Ghats range, which is classified as a biodiversity hotspot." Wikipedia

Shot Info

This was shot while I was away with work so I used my lightweight D40x coupled with a Gorrilapod that still provides a good compromise between weight and image quality. My normal kit includes a Sigma 10-20mm and a whole host of filters but on this occasion I didn't pack them and so this was taken with the Nikkor 18-55mm with no filters attached.

I experimented with exposure length and timing of the shot, varying with the flow of water coming in and out and in the end used the weak on camera flash to add some highlight to the near rocks and water surface. The colours appear naturally with the shot taken about 20 mins after the sun had slipped over the horizon providing the deep purple and blue hues.

Exposure 4.5" at F22.0 (I would have probably used 14.0 if I had had my ND filters with me!) and 18mm focal length (27mm equivalant) using ISO 100. Apeture Priority mode was used with matrix (evaluative) metering adjusting exposure compensation until I struck the right balance between sky and foreground water.
