From the back of the card:
"It may be difficult for one to believe that any railroad in the nation would be relying on motive power which had celebrated its 50th birthday a few years ago. Yet such is indeed true, for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad has been doing just that with its General Electric electric locomotives built in 1915. And until February 20, 1973, it appeared that the Milwaukee intended to continue using them in main-line freight service for some time to come. (On that date it was announced that the 656 miles of electrified operations would be phased out by 1976 in favor of straight diesel electric power.) Three-unit locomotive 45, photographed here at Deer Lodge, Montana, on February 2, 1962, is one of these remarkable anachronisms, and, except for the pilot plow and colorful paint scheme, the units look very much as they did when they were delivered.

On May 13, 1983, Dad shot SBD SD45-2 3624 (ex-CRR 3624, to to SBD 8982, to CSX 8982, to MRL 308) at Etowah, Tennessee.
A year earlier, Dad shot this unit as CRR 3624 in Family Lines paint and six years earlier he shot it in original CRR paint.
Along Indiana 1 near Connersville, Indiana. This locomotive was originally built for the Illinois Central RR as an EMD GP9 in 12/1954 and later rebuilt as a GP10. It looks like it is currently registered to the Maumee and Western Railroad Corporation even though it still sorts the logo of the Illinois Central. It was sitting on tracks belonging to the Connersville and New Castle Railroad just outside what appears to be their engine shop. Perhaps they now own it and are in the process of repainting it.

Te Norfolk Southern 7016 in an EMD GP50 built for NS predecessor Southern Railway. The L&C 2273 has a slightly more complicated history. Built in December, 1971 for the Chesapeake & Ohio as the number 3791 as an EMD GP40, it later become CSX 6566. CSX sold at the Texas-Mexico who gave it it it's third number, 1173. It was later sold to FURX, a leasing company, who gave it to number it wears today and also rebuilt it to GP38-3 standards before selling it to the Gulf & Ohio Railways who assigned it to the Yadkin Valley Railroad. Finally the G&O transferred it to the L&C.

Lancaster and Chester Railroad #3821 was built in 1978 as Conrail GP38-2 #8235. In the Conrail takeover, it became Nrfolk Southern #5368. NS sold it to Hems Leasing where it became HLCX #3821. Helms leased it to the L&C who then bought the locomotive.

"...The train in this scene is the George Washington, whose principal route extended from Washinton, D.C., to Cincinnati, Ohio, although much of tis passenger equipment had a diversity of origins and destinations. The RPO and the two mail-express-baggage cars coupled immediatly behind the locomotive made the entire run, as did on of the two streamlined coaches, while the other one was forwarded from Ashland to Louisville, Kentucky. The dining car provided all meals between the two cities, and the rear car was one of the C&O's famous "Imperial Salon" coaches which originated in Phoebus, Virginia, across the bay from Norfolk, and terminated in Cincinnati...

NSRM NW2 1000 (ex-UP 1000, xx-SN 607, xxx-WP 607, xxxx-STE 1000, xxxxx-UP 1000, nee-EMC 889). This well-traveled NW2 was built in 1939 as EMC demonstrator #889. It served a six-month demo period with the Union Pacific and at the end of that term, UP bought the unit and numbered it #1000. This made it the first ever diesel-electric unit purchased by UP and over the next two years, UP would purchase another 44 NW2s. The unit was retired by UP in 1966 and sold to Stockton Terminal & Eastern. STE eventually traded the unit to the Western Pacific, who completely rebuilt it. WP transfered the unit to subsidiary Sacremento Northern. After the WP-UP merger, the unit returned to UP ownership for the first time in nearly 20 years. It was retired by UP again in 1984 and came to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in 1993. The musuem currently has plans to repaint the unit into it's original black paint scheme.
While at the museum, I got to participate in their Engineer for an Hour program, thanks to my buddy David, and this was the unit I got drive. I feel very lucky to have gotten to sit at the controls of this historic engine.

Seven years later six of the GP9-model, with more powerful engines (1750 hp vs 1500), were acquired and were honored with numbers 820-825, continuing from the end of the 4-8-4 group (800-819). A second batch of six joined the first in 1959, they having been numbered 826-831. Typically, these new units weighed close to 250,000 lbs., and could exert a tractive effort of 60,000 lbs.
