The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation was incorporated in 1993 to facilitate the merger of Burlington Northern, Incorporated, parent of the Burlington Northern Railroad, and Santa Fe Pacific Corporation, which owned the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (Santa Fe). The corporate merger was consummated on September 22, 1995, at which point shareholders of the previous companies became shareholders of BNSF and the two companies became wholly owned subsidiaries of BNSF. In December 1996, the two holding companies and two railroads were formally merged, and in January 1998 the remaining intermediate holding company was folded into the railroad.

 

Robert D. Krebs of Santa Fe Pacific was president of BNSF from the merger until 1999, chief executive from the merger until 2000, and chairman from 1997 until 2002. He was succeeded in all three positions by Matthew K. Rose.

 

On November 3, 2009, Berkshire Hathaway made a $26 billion offer to buy the remaining 77.4% of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation it did not already own, valuing the purchase at $34 billion. The deal, which including Berkshire's previous investment and the assumption of $10 billion in Burlington Northern debt brings the total value to $44 billion. Consummated February 12, 2010, it is the largest acquisition in Berkshire Hathaway's history.

 

The deal was structured so that the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation would merge with and into R Acquisition Company, LLC, an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. The deal closed on February 12, 2010, and at the same time, the now merged company changed its name to Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC that remains an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.

The City of White Rock has a railway that runs along the waterfront. This single track rail line operates 24 hours a day and is operated by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) and is used by BNSF and Amtrak passenger trains.

The Mission Railway Bridge is a Canadian Pacific Railway bridge spanning the Fraser River between Mission, and Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada.

 

Replacing an earlier bridge built in 1891, which was the first and only bridge crossing of the Fraser below Siska in the Fraser Canyon until the construction of the New Westminster rail bridge in 1904, it was constructed in 1909 by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). The Mission Railway Bridge is supported by 13 concrete piers and is approximately 533 metres in length. Before completion of the Mission highway bridge, highway traffic to and from Matsqui and Abbotsford with Mission used the bridge as a one-way alternating route, with traffic lights at either end to control direction. Rail traffic often held up car crossings, causing long and often very lengthy waits, which were a part of daily life in the Central Valley until the new bridge was completed.

 

Beneath the bridge's north abutment is an important river-level gauge monitored during the annual Fraser freshet. The bridge is also the location of the end of the Fraser's tidal bore - downstream from the bridge the river is increasingly influenced by tidal influences from the Georgia Strait.

 

Swing span

The Mission Railway Bridge has a swing span which has a vertical clearance of 4.9 metres above the water when closed. The swing span is fitted atop a circular concrete pier, the 10th from the north bank of the river. The 10th pier is protected from shipping traffic by two 46 metre wood piers extending upstream and downstream respectively perpendicular to the bridge which are tapered at both ends. The navigation channel past the bridge is 30 metres in width. At night a fixed white light is displayed on piers 9 and 11 as well as at the up-river and down-river ends of the protection pier.

 

The majority of marine traffic consists of log tows and gravel barges, which are permitted to use the navigation channel beneath the fixed span between piers 5 and 6. The swing span is used for wood chip barges and other vessels which cannot navigate beneath the span between piers 5 and 6.

 

CPR maintains a bridge tender 24 hours per day at an office on the north bank of the bridge. Vessels requesting passage through the swing span contact the bridge tender on marine VHF radio, whereby the tender walks the bridge to a control booth situated on the swing span.

It has three transcontinental routes that provide rail connections between the western and eastern United States. BNSF trains traveled over 169 million miles (272 million km) in 2010, more than any other North American railroad. The BNSF and Union Pacific have a duopoly on all transcontinental freight rail lines in the Western U.S. and share trackage rights over thousands of miles of track.

Op de overwegend bewolkte zaterdag 23 oktober ging ik naar Roosendaal om daar samen met Jip en de gebroeders Trimbos de bierhandel evenals het frietkot in Essen te bezoeken om zo een gezellige avond te hebben in Roosendaal. Nog voordat het middaguur sloeg nam ik de trein richting het zuidwesten van de provincie zodat we de hele middag naar vrije keuze konden invullen, we hoefden immers pas tegen het eind van de middag richting Essen. Omdat de Kameel rond 14:00 in Roosendaal zou arriveren vanuit Breda en de zon wat meer terrein wist te winnen werden er plannen gemaakt om richting Zegge te gaan zodat dit oude kleine dieseltreinstel daar vastgelegd kon worden. Echter trok het toch weer een beetje dicht boven de spoorlijn tussen Roosendaal en Breda, maar boven de zuidelijke helft van Roosendaal was een scherpe rand van de sluierbewolking te zien wat erop duidde dat het in de regio van Nispen en Essen volledig zonnig was. Daarbij kwam kijken dat er een omgeleide dubbele Thalys evenals een Eurostar vanuit Rotterdam richting Roosendaal onderweg waren en als kers op de taart was Lineas met haar "Heroes" locomotief ook nog zuidwaarts onderweg. Omdat de Thalys al vrij snel zou komen werd er als een speer richting Essen gereden omdat de zon op het deel tussen de Maststraat en Hoekstraat kops zou staan en door de lage zon er mogelijk schaduwen van bomen bij de Nigtestraat op het spoor zouden zijn. Echter kwamen we er onderweg achter dat we mogelijk Essen niet op tijd zouden bereiken en dus kozen we eieren voor ons geld en sloegen we vlak voor de grens de Nigtestraat in waar we vervolgens snel onze apparatuur konden opzetten. Als meevaller bleek ten eerste de schaduw niet zo hinderlijk als gedacht en daarnaast was het sein nog gesloten waardoor we toch nog voldoende tijd hadden ons naar wens te positioneren. Uiteindelijk had de Thalys dusdanig veel vertraging opgelopen dat we ruim Essen hadden kunnen bereiken maar dat wisten we van tevoren natuurlijk niet. Maar dat was gelukkig geen probleem want deze stek was ook erg fraai en zodoende kon ik m'n eerste interessante foto maken op het grensbaanvak tussen Roosendaal en Essen.

 

De klok slaat exact half 3 in de middag als het duo bestaande uit Thalys 4540 en Thalys 4303 als THA 9352 vanuit Amsterdam Centraal de Nigtestraat te Nispen oversteekt onderweg richting Paris-Nord. Over een slordige 500 meter heeft de trein de Belgische grens bereikt waar het via Lijn 12 naar Antwerpen Centraal gaat. Waar het bij ons strakblauw was, begon ongeveer drie kilometer verderop een dikke sluierbewolking wat resulteerde in dit prachtige licht onder de donkere lucht!

Lancaster and Chester Train 12 works Circle S Feed Mill in Chester, South Carolina

7DOS Movement Macro Monday, Pushing the engine down the track and timing the shutter to catch the movement with a stop at the end of the track to end with more detail of the engine. probably should have used a tripod to keep the shake down, but since second try did this good thought stick with it.

The Southern Railway of British Columbia, branded as SRY Rail Link (reporting mark SRY) is a Canadian short line railway operating in the southwestern British Columbia. The main facility is the port at Annacis Island with major import of cars, export of forestry products, and other shipments. The railway has interconnections with three Class I railroads, including Canadian Pacific (CP), Canadian National (CN) and Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF). It operates a fleet of 29 locomotives, mostly consisting of EMD GP-9 & SW900 locomotives. It also rosters 5 unique Ex. Canadian National Railway GMD-1 locomotives, and also runs 3 SD38-2 locomotives, and 1 SD38AC. The railroad also operates a fleet 2,000 rail cars, hauling approximately 70,000 carloads per year. It operates around 123 miles (198 km) of track, 62 miles (100 km) of which is mainline track.

The Provincial government sold the railway to the Itel Rail Group in 1988. The railway was renamed the Southern Railway of British Columbia. The line was originally built in 1910 as the British Columbia Electric Railway (BCER), an interurban trolley service for passengers (until 1950) as well as for freight such as farm produce. The railway was taken over by Crown corporation BC Hydro in 1961, and was known as the BC Hydro Railway. In 1988 Freight rights, rolling stock and Rails were sold to Itel of Chicago with protected passenger rights at no cost. In 1994, it was bought by Washington Group International but kept the SRY name. The Washington Group has since merged with URS. To this day the Province and BC Hydro retain the right to reintroduce passenger service. Wikipedia

This is a close-up photo of rusting, weathered details on an old train engine at the Railway Museum in Musquodoboit Harbour.

Lancaster and Chester Railroad Train 14 brings a short train past the business office on Main Street in Lancaster. They'll get on the former Southern Railway line and shove back to the AmeriSteel plant. The covered hoppers will go into storage and the gondola will go to AmeriSteel to be loaded with railroad spikes.

Ex Warbonnet (BNSF 636) leads a Q-SPOALT towards Commerce City as the crew is almost done for this run into Denver.

In 2006, Red Springs & Northern Railroad Fairbanks-Morse H12-44 1801 sits at the interchage with CSX in preparation of psssenger excursions that never came to be. RSNR 1801 was built in 1953 as Fairbanks-Morse 76, a demonstrator unit. She then became Yankeetown Docks (YDC) 1 in Nashville, Tenneessee before being sent to the North Carolina Ports Authority as NCPR 1801.

On a dreary day in December, 2014, we had been shooting what would be the last runs of the Lancaster and Chester Railroad's Santa Trains, we found an interesting lash up at the ADM plant in Kershaw. Ex-Southern Railway and the last two end cab switchers in service on the main line at the time had taken the train down on Friday on Train 14. Two GPs had been taken off in Lancaster to run the Santa trains and replaced with SW1200 94 and SW900 90.

 

Lancaster and Chester 2866 is an EMD GP38AC built for the Southern Railway in 1971. Since being sold to Gulf & Ohio Railways, it worked for a number of their properties before being sent to the L&C. She retains her as built short high hood.

Rusting train engine on the grounds of the Train Museum in Snoqualmie, Washington.

 

Most people probably go to the Train Museum in Snoqualmie, Washington for the train rides and for a visit to the quaint train station that is now a museum, but about a mile away on the road to the town center is 50 yards of decaying, rusting train cars full of fascinating textures.

 

Unfortunately, the train is about 30 feet behind a chain link fence, but I got some decent shots using a telephoto while walking along the elevated highway that runs parallel to the tracks. I was lucky that the sun was almost directly overhead and casting perfect shadows for about 20 minutes before the surfaces were in shadows for the day.

  

A Fort Lawn to Lancaster passenger special on the Lancaster and Chester Railway pulls into Lancaster on October 2, 2006 behind EMD SW9090s 90 and 92. LC 90 was among the last SW900s built by Electro-Motive Division or EMD. It was bought new by the Lancaster and Chester in October 1965.

Lancaster and Chester Train 12 has just picked up some cars from LC 12 and is now heading to Richburg to work the various industries there. I have to say that out of all the changed I have seen on the L&C over the last 25+ years, I never imagined I'd see a tunnel motor on he South Carolina shortline.

L&C SW900 #91 works at Circle S Ranch Feed Mill on Halloween Day in 2008. She was one of two SW900s bought by the Lancaster and Chester in October 1965. She has been Circle S power since at least 2004.

 

According to the official Circle S website, the mill was put into production in 1998 and has continuously provided all of the feed for Circle S Ranch’s turkeys as well as selling feed to several outside producers. The Feed Mill produces in excess of 400,000 tons of finished feed per year. The finished feed is delivered from the Feed Mill to Circle S Ranch’s network of company and contract grower farms by trucks which run around the clock.
