The trail yesterday was lined with an amazing amount of cottonwood fluff. It almost looked like snow in some spots, it was so thick!

"The Capital Crescent Trail (CCT) is a rail trail project running though the Northwest D.C. Area. On weekends, it is a VERY popular spot for local cyclists and rollerbladers. During weekdays, bike commuters use the CCT to travel between Downtown DC and the Northwest Suburbs.

The southern 7 miles between Georgetown and Bethesda has a 9-foot wide asphalt surface and is in excellent condition. The northern Georgetown Branch extension provides a crushed gravel surface for the final 4 miles between Bethesda and Silver Spring. The two trails are connected by a brand new tunnel located under downtown Bethesda."

Bell Trail is very popular with hikers and anglers who come to enjoy the solitude and other rewards offered by a clear cool stream flowing through a scenic desert canyon. Wet Beaver Canyon is one of four major canyons that cut Coconino National Forest's red rock rim country.

Most of the canyon falls within the Wet Beaver Wilderness. Wilderness areas are rare, wild places set aside by U.S. Congress where the land is allowed to retain its natural state, serving as a natural haven for humans to escape civilization. To help minimize human impacts in Wilderness areas, motorized and mechanized equipment are strictly prohibited by law, including bicycles, strollers, carts, remote control aircraft, and drones.

For the most part, the trail follows a route along a bench well above the streambed. A number of side trails, lead down to the waterside and indicate the location of good swimming holes or popular fishing spots. As the trail wanders deeper into the canyon, it leaves the canyon bottom to wind high along an escarpment of red sandstone and offer scenic views of the riparian area, the canyon and the surrounding mountains and valleys, before dropping back down to the stream at Bell Crossing.

Most people who come to this trail hike only the first 3.3 miles to Bell Crossing, taking advantage any one of several access paths that branch off the main trail and lead down to the stream. After crossing the Wet Beaver Creek, the Bell Trail climbs the canyon's south wall to a high, grassy plateau where it winds through pinyon juniper stands and open grasslands offering views that stretch all the way to the Sedona Red Rocks Country and the San Francisco Peaks. Eleven miles from the trailhead at Beaver Creek, Bell Trail ends at Forest Road 214.

Like many of our fragile riparian areas along creeks and rivers, the area is day-use only. Camping and campfires are prohibited along much of Wet Beaver Creek to help minimize damage to the soil and vegetation, reduce disturbances to wildlife, and prevent pollution of the clean, clear water of the creek. Wet Beaver Creek flows into the Verde River, a critical water source for many cities and communities in Arizona.

This trip was in early spring when the trees were just beginning to leaf out and snowmelt from a heavy winter was clouding the creek. Photo taken March 2017 by Deborah Lee Soltesz. Trail Ridge Road is the name for the stretch of U.S. Highway 34 and is the highest continuous highway in the United States. It traverses Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park, Colorado in the east to Grand Lake, Colorado in the west. It crosses the Continental Divide at Milner Pass (elev. 10,758 ft/3,279 m) and reaches a maximum elevation of 12,183 ft (3,713 m), near Fall River Pass (elev. 11,796 ft/3,595 m). Near the highest point on the road is another pass, Iceberg Pass (elev. 11,827 ft/3,604 m).

Trail Ridge Road is closed during the winter, and often remains closed until late spring or early summer depending on the snowpack.

From the 2007 Haunted Hikes.

I don't have many photos from this section. I was always busy on the "road" section. Since the park was open to the public during the day, most of the props had to be setup and taken down each night. This photo was taken early in the setup. By the time the hikes started, there was much more going on here that this photo would indicate. Relentless.

This was the first part of the hike every year, except 2008 when we reversed direction. You can see that this is an honest to goodness hiking trail in the foothills, not your typical city park. Once it got dark out, it got very dark. This would immediately take people out of their comfort zone. We always had a few people quit at this point, refusing to go any further. Imagine it being so dark out it's hard to see, atmospheric lighting, more props and lots of monsters that could jump out from anywhere. Great location, fun times.

2013 was the last year for the Haunted Hikes.

This is a view in the Alder Creek area where the Donner family set up camps. There were originally 22 people. Eight of those would not make it through the winter. It is believed there were three separate camps. This stump of a lodgepole pine tree is considered to be the location of the camp of George Donner, his wife and daughters.
