Quick hike last night. Bivied just past the pass to McGowan lakes. This morning went back to sawtooth lake to mess around with a couple panoramic cameras. This is from my phone.
While on our second stint in the Kruger Park of this trip, we were determined to see a leopard. After seeing an amazing leopard sighting on the way to our camp right after entering the park, we were blessed with an second amazing sighting with a rather clear and unobstructed view. Since this stint was on a private concession of the park, our driver knew where a leopard had been hanging out and was able to get us within about 20 feet of it at first, just before sunset, which is where I took this photograph from. There is nothing quite like getting within striking distance to some of Africa's big cats.
This bird seemed to have something in its bill and I couldn't figure it out until I saw it in my camera and saw that the bill was defective. Must be handling okay since it looks healthy to me.

Does it get better than this?
A little arty farty shot from this mornings sunrise taken and edited on my little camera.

This was a difficult shot to get. I was on the ship and because of the need for 1 second shutter speed and not having a tripod on this trip. I had to brace the camera against our stateroom balcony railing.

This flower carved out of stone makes one of the fine details of the entrance to the garden.

This is the first time I have seen this uncommon visitor in my garden. It spent quite a time feeding on this Buddleia Bush, mostly wings closed. Was in shadow, so not bright and clear, but I was thrilled just to see it.

This is the second in a series depicting construction progress on the last building site at the Southeast end of False Creek - TESORO by Concert Properties.
The photos will appear in album “ 2021 - Vancouver - Concert Properties - TESORO”.
In time honoured tradition, I have done a collage of my 100 favourite photos of the year.
The photos amongst this collection aren't necessarily the ones with most views or most favourites on Flickr, just the ones I enjoyed most.
I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to stop by my photostream this year. Your comments have been much appreciated. I do try as much as possible to return the favour, although sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day. I look forward to seeing all your photos in 2016 & your reaction to mine.
So this is a setup shot taken to show what I did to take the previous, "One Word" shot.
This was a real world, practical setup to create the shot. No heavy-handed "Photoshop" work was done to create the image of the planet and word inside the drop of water.
To do this you need to set a lot up before you take the shot. Three things need to be lined up for a successful shot.
1) The subject and camera need to be lined up so you can see the drop of water on the end of the blade of grass in this case. Distance for the magnification and height to just see the thing.
2) Then I bring in the background/refraction subject. That needs to be lit harshly, yet no spill over light onto the drop of water. I use a focusable hand held flashlight. The angle of this light is very important.
But the distance of the background is something that you need to figure out by moving it up/down, left/right and forward and back. Each direction makes a small change in the refracted image inside the drop of water.
The background can be anything you want it to be. For the image I created I used a restriction free image that NASA released to the world a while ago. Its called, "The Blue Marble."
I then drew the letters for the word (a couple times actually to get the size right) and colored them in and cut them out using a razor blade from the single stick labels I made them out of. Then I stuck them onto the image.
This is a real image that was created in a practical way. Not all done in photoshop. Hell, I don't even own that software.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube covering this technique, just search Water Droplet Refraction.
This chunky bird is found in the Andes from Venezuela to Peru. It is olive above and white below with grayish flanks. The head is boldly striped with black and gray. Sexes similar. Pairs forage in the understory of montane forest, edges, and second growth, often on or very close to the ground. Typically occurs from around 1,500–3,000 m, but can locally range lower to about 500 m.
This one was photographed in Colombia guided by Neotropic Photo Tours.
This was a super rare chance to see the original deco-esque paintings that Crowley created with artist Harris reflected his own dark weird take on the deck based around his self created magick religion Thoth. The kind of work you would never expect to see in Venice which is what made it so inspiring.
April 2015. This marks the start of a walking trail that leads up "The Paps" Happy Wall Wednesday! The information below is from Wikipedia:-
The Paps of Anu (Irish: Dá Chích Anann, "the breasts of Anu") are 2 mountains near Killarney in Co. Kerry. The eastern summit is 694m (2,277 ft) & the western top is 690m (2,260 ft). The mountains are named after Anu; believed to have been an ancient mother goddess.
Cormac's Glossary describes Anu or Danu as "the mother of the gods of Ireland". On each summit is a prehistoric cairn, which may be miniature passage graves or house burial cists. The cairn on the eastern Pap is slightly larger, with a height of 4 metres (13 ft) and diameter of 16 metres (52 ft). They have been described as "stone nipples on the great breasts of the mother goddess".
Archaeologist Frank Coyne suggested that the mountains were seen as sacred and said "There is little doubt that the mountaintops of both The Paps were utilised for ritual in prehistory". To the ancients, the mountains reinforced the idea that the Earth was a motherly body.

This particular day in Utah/Arizona was super windy, making it hard to find any birds. The Mountain Bluebirds (Sialia currucoides) were still flying but mostly I found them foraging on the ground, hidden behind the brush.
Occasionally they would perch on the fence posts and barbed wire fences, struggling not to be blown away by the wind. Every single one of them was naturally facing the wind, leaving the sun behind and my camera with adequately illuminated bottom! ;)
TWO HUNDRED SIXTY-TWO
“Dying is not romantic, and death is not a game which will soon be over... Death is not anything... death is not... It's the absence of presence, nothing more... the endless time of never coming back... a gap you can't see, and when the wind blows through it, it makes not sound...”

This was one i had wanted to shoot for sometime
I was lucky as the sky changed continuosly while I was there
...Would tell you as my brother
This country is your mother
Would tell it like I meant what I said
As I took off my hat for flowers and leaves
And thanked it from within me somewhere...
Part of a nice new song about Norway, at the end of today's national day. The whole song, in Norwegian:
Dette landet
Ville berre sei eit ord
syngje fjellets store song
om breane og viddene og snøen
Men eg vender blikket ned
Ville berre sei eit ord
Ville peike på eit spor
Ei bøn ifrå den store blåe jord
ifrå skog og ifrå hav
ifrå alt me haustar av
At me snart må finne vegen ut av ord
For det ropar til oss, bror
Dette landet er vår mor!
For det ropar på vår ære og vårt band
til å vara den fine og heimlege hamn
som lyser oss imot og er vårt land

This little bird appeared this morning amid the undergrowth of a weedy patch in my garden. He was quite content and tolerated me taking his/her photo for some time, allowing me to get very close. This is one of the results.

This is a Sagebrush Sparrow, mostly found east of California, but it does look very much like a Bell's Sparrow. Another birder found it in advance of the annual Carrizo Plain Christmas bird count, and it stuck around for count day, for which I'm grateful
This is Secret.
I found her walking with her hooded ilk around the back streets of Mumbai. Usually when I see a cadre of the enshrouded, they are accompanied by Muslim man that is glaring at almost everyone. This time there seemed to be no alpha around, so I asked her for her name. She looked at me and smiled (I think) and then looked furtively around to see if anyone was watching. I got the distinct impression that since I was a white oddity that actually spoke to her that she wanted to talk, but then thought better of it and made a slight bow before gliding away.

Perhaps something worth reading this Friday morning...
Have you ever stood at the top of a mountain, in front of a lake, before an animal - and considered for a moment how awesome this planet is?
I took up photography because I found in the photograph a form of expression I couldn't deliver with words. This photograph was taken in the South Downs in Southern England and the view was unbelievable. The land stretched out before me was begging to be photographed, but how do you do justice to a scene of such magnitude?
Sometimes I find the hardest thing for a photographer to do is figure out the best way to actually do justice to the natural canvas that the world rolls out in front of us. I hope this image shows a fraction of what I saw that day, though really, it's nowhere near as good as the real thing.
This shot was taken with a Nikon D7100 body, 18-55 stock kit lens, a 0.6 stop graduated Formatt Hitech ND filter and a circular polariser. Photoshop creative cloud was then used to provide a more dynamic visual range of light. For those with questions about the kit I use please continue to message, I'll respond as fast as I can.
I have had this shot in my stream for a while but was unhappy with the colour version so thought that mono did the wonderful light on this day more justice...
Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic for Island of Donan), is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and lies about half a mile from the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan is named after St Donan, a Celtic saint martyred in the Dark Ages.
This graceful arch provided support for climbing plants, as well as visual interest along the pathway.
this is a photoshopped image of a photo that i posted previously. Just messing with the selective colour and colour replacement. from yellow leaves to redish leaves.
I also cropped and mirrored the image to give it that "different feel"

Esso chiude la Valle d'Ampezzo a nord (assieme all'antistante monte Pomagagnon), dividendola dalle valli circostanti.
Of course I am using my Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens. This photo is a nod towards Willem Jonkers, who is a fantastic Dutch street photographer. Check out his photos here, and this photo was taken in Mystic, Connecticut.
(This is Not a Train).
A little ship moc i have had waiting for a photo opportunity for a while..... The seed part was the Train front, so i started from the back and Went forward......
It was fun to use those fronts, and incorporate them into a little ship. The overall shape pleased me, and made for a satisfactory build.
I did not have a plan for the ships use when i created it, but the colors made me think of protein, therefor it of course carries that!! ;-))
Plz feel free to comment, and enjoy!

This is a shot taken Jan. 3, 2025. These hawks will often hunt by hovering in place, flapping their wings if there is not enough wind. Red-tailed hawks will also do this.
In a stiff breeze they are able to just face into the wind and stay in place, known as kiting. I saw one of these hawks doing this today Jan 17, in a very stiff breeze, 20-30 mph. Some very cold weather is due to move in overnight.
I took this shot on Pike O Blisco as I wandered around the summit (31 July 2018, 15:48:20 ) , ignoring the summit while there was someone there. Eventually I got to the summit and found a dog lead, the people were long gone. I decided to take the dog lead down with me in case the people had realised they'd forgot it.. but no, there was no one to be seen.. so if you recognise these people, fat chance with the only poor photo I have of them, I have their lead :-)
