Think of the Maldives as a huge expanse of sea punctuated by circular coral reefs which rise up above the sea floor. Over the last couple of million years sea level has fallen by up to 100m more than a dozen times because of accumulations of fresh water ice on land caused by the earth's climate becoming cooler. What you see here is an accumulation of dead coral, perhaps broken off by storms, perhaps pushed here by a rising sea level when the ice melted about 10000 years ago. That's about 400 generations to you and I.
This bird has been hanging out in the yard all afternoon. I wouldn't find this very strange if I lived anywhere near a body of water. It keeps flying away when I go outside to take a picture of it. I just looked out the window and it is back for the 4th time.

Just completed a 3 day hike down the South Kaibab trail of the Grand Canyon, 2 nights/1 day at a cabin in Phantom Ranch on the bottom, and hike out on the Bright Angel Trail. The overlook shots are mostly on the S. Kaibab, with glimpses of the Colorado River visible in some. A few shots, with people begin to show the incredible scale of the place. Snow & ice at the top for the first 2-3 miles, very cold, but then nice but still cold at Phantom. I couldn't hike with my "real" camera, so all I had with me was an old point-n-shoot. Still, given the shock & sadness of the mass shootings in my Tucson town which I learned of just as I was about to descend, the beauty of the Grand Canyon was the perfect antidote. It really helped.
Think when he was originally sculpted he had a full teeth roar - now he has a toothless grin. Old age gets all of us in the end!

I think someone on my dad's side of the family had something to do with the NAPA parts store in Geneva back in the 1950's. Maybe a distant cousin or cousin's in-laws or something. His family was originally from not too far from here so it's very possible.
