I think life can be hectic, and I think we can sometimes make it so. One thing I discovered this past summer was how much I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the early morning. I made it routine to wake up early, read a book, and drink some coffee. However, there was nothing that I enjoyed more other than the way the light was able to bring this tree to life once the sun came up just above the horizon. Another day, after a long storm, when you can smell the rain on the grass, there was a cool, calm evening left behind. This same tree was the only one that seemed to be to glowing afterwords. This sensation of the serene nature has been by a form of therapy, where I can go and detach from this insanely busy world. After having been so busy one point in the school year where I developed bronchitis, I have found that I need some source in life for an outlet to some pent up anxiety. To me, this outlet is nature. I think our natural human nature needs to feel connected to it. I mean, there just seems to be an uplifted environment when there are plants incorporated into a room, or a happier trip when hiking is involved. I feel as if we are naturally called to adventure in nature, maybe where some great discoveries are hidden. I can say for a fact that this passion for nature led me to an interest in Environmental Science, and now also Mechanical Engineering. I have always loved discovering nature and the way it works on a more technical level. I love how some of humanity’s greatest inventions were a result of copying nature in a way. This greater connection and understanding of the world inspires me to keep adventuring, to keep searching for my greatest discovery.
Found this little fella in the garden while cutting the grass. Tried to keep him fenced in the corner, away from the blades, but he escaped - to safety!
Toast Wine Lounge: Think of us often
What:
Lunch with a colleague at a new restaurant/wine bar in Rockridge, CA.
How:
The check got dropped and attached with a clothespin was the most
brilliantly simple comment card with only two words: "Date, Comments." I
then realized that the comment cards posted in the outside patio where we
were sitting must have come from customers like myself. I sniffed brilliance
so sought out the server (who ended up being one of the owners) to learn
more about the comment cards, what gets posted (only the positives?), etc.
In my brief conversation with Kristen I learned something even more
interesting.the stacks of corks displayed in the restaurant were brought in
by customers. The owners ask customers to bring in corks to help decorate
the restaurant. This means customers all over the East Bay are thinking of
Toast every time they sit down and relax to drink a bottle of wine. I also
learned that they used the community to raise money to open the restaurant
and gave those that pledged wine vouchers to be used when the restaurant
opened ("bar"raising vs. fundraising).
Why:
Linking an everyday (or, uh, every so often) event like opening a bottle of
wine to an association with your brand can encourage customers to think of
you often. In the case of Toast, it also creates an organic way for
customers to connect to the Toast brand when it matters most.when customers
are consuming what Toast sells: wine and food. Brill!

Old pics from '95. The photo on the right was taken at Tate's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Shoppe in Wheaton IL. It was Halloween night - my co-worker Troy and I served ice cream dressed as an army man and Cruella Deville. I think the white in my hair was acrylic paint.
I think I can see light at the end of the tunnel!!! Kevin, I worked on the tree reflections, added the blue on the left. The trees may not be blended enough yet, but from a distance it looks pretty good. What do you think? I put down some leaves, and will be adding some more. I am not through with the path yet. I added some warmness to the grass with orange. I want to do more highlights and shadows on the foreground grass and path. Right now, I am doing the fun stuff - detailing. That is when it become play. Also, I have to put in the little puppy and kitty somewhere. Have any ideas on that? The cat is mostly white with a couple of black spots and the puppy is a little black Lhasa Apso. I want them to be subtle, not a main feature
