The facade of the Detroit Institute of Arts is often used as representative of Detroit itself, inscribed as it is in a democratic spirit: "Dedicated by the People of Detroit to the Knowledge and Enjoyment of Art." The city's seal is etched in the center, a remarkable image if you look hard: in the foreground, two woman stand, one weeping as looking behind her, and the other comforting her and looking out to the right -- for behind them is the spectacle of a city all in flames. It likewise bears a twofold motto: "Speramus Meliora / Resurget Cineribus," or "We hope for better things / It will rise from the ashes." The reference is to the great Detroit fire of 1805, which basically eradicated the entire settlement at the time. Rebuild they did.

I think there was more coverage of Racemania because the developer, Travellers Tales, even at the time, was far more well-known in the games industry than Magenta, the developers of MMA. TT had already done a bunch of Disney games such as the original Toy Story game (with which I was involved) and some Sonic games for Sega.
