The second preliminary match of Hall 3’s IHG football campaign continued with a match against traditional rivals Hall 2. The match was highly anticipated by many supporters prior to the game, such is the history of rivalry between both Halls. Despite the scoreless draw at full time, the match was definitely not lacking in action.
Both teams were raring to go and went for each other right from kick off. Crunching tackles were all over the place as neither team desired anything less than a win. After a tense opening period, Hall 3 began to settle down and started pushing higher up into Hall 2’s half. Building upon the confidence from the clean sheet in their previous game, Hall 3 repeatedly launched attacks on their opponents, safe in the knowledge that they were well protected at the back.
The first incident of note came when striker Cheng Wei, starting his first game for Hall 3 after missing the previous match, bulldozed his way past the desperate lunges of two defenders and managed to lay the ball off to supporting striker Andrew. Despite defenders closing in on him, Andrew managed to get a shot off, which went narrowly over the bar.
Chances were few and far between, until the second half where Hall 3’s best chance of the match came along. Proving himself a real handful for Hall 2 with his pace, it was again Cheng Wei who won a clear penalty after being tripped by a defender who had no answer to his speed. Up stepped captain Redzuan to take the penalty. With lingering indecision as to which side to shoot, Redzuan unfortunately missed the penalty, much to the relief of Hall 2.
The match carried on and scorching sun began to take the toll on all players, but such was the attitude of Hall 3 that they never stopped pushing for a goal. Hall 2 was contented to sit deep and defend, and only launching counter attacks to try and catch the solid Hall 3 defenders out. After an intense 80 minutes, the final whistle came and there is was – the dreaded penalty shoot-out. However, the Hall 3 players had anticipated the possibility of such a close match going to penalties, and captain Redzuan had specially allocated extra training time for the team to practise penalties the previous day, on top of their many training sessions.
With intense pressure on the penalty-takers to score, the shoot out got underway. It was all even until the 3rd attempt, with Gavin, Andrew and captain Redzuan all cooly slotting past the Hall 2 goalkeeper. As the Hall 2 player took his penalty, our goalkeeper Zhen Ming guessed his direction correctly and dived full length to his right and managed to palm the penalty away. Hall 3 erupted in joy. It was now 3-2 in Hall 3’s favour. Hanyong and his counterpart from Hall 2 both scored the 4th penalties, making it 4-3 to Hall 3. This meant that Hall 3 would win the shoot out if they scored their last penalty. Vice captain Iqbal walked up to take the decisive penalty, but unfortunately missed as he put the ball narrowly past the post. However, the final Hall 2 player missed when he had to score to keep themselves in the shoot out. As it was, Hall 3 won 4-3 on penalties, advancing to the Quarter Finals.
The match was held at the SRC soccer pitch at 1000 hrs.
