A macro view of a tight knot in a mini bungee cord with complex light. The frame represents a span of ⅝ -of-an-inch across.

I spent an inordinate amount of time getting the composition right for this image. As it turns out, that was the easy part. Correctly illuminating the scene was exponentially more challenging; see below for details.

Strobist/technical info:

The scene was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights, a steady LED light, and the blue LED of a Coast TX10 Quad Color flashlight.

The SB900s were positioned at 9- and 4-o'clock, one-foot above and two feet away from the bungee knot. They were fired in Manual Mode @ ¼ power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes. A steady LED light was placed at 11-o'clock and aimed hard-right behind the subject. The blue LED of the TX 10 was aimed from 4-o'clock and slightly below the subject. The LEDs were exposed for ⅛ s.

The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers.

This large heron was perched on a pier support post behind the beautiful Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda, Florida over the Christmas holiday. A dramatic sunset was taking place over the harbor and so I slowly worked my way around to be in a position to capture the heron's silhouette against the backdrop of light and color. Meanwhile, the bird kept a wary eye on me... ready to fly at any moment. In this shot, it is crowching before springing into flight. It landed upon the roof of the mall.

In processing this image, I used Photoshop's Dehaze tool to further define the clouds.

Lobsang was the newest monk of 70 total at Phuktal Gompa. He remained behind to watch the monastery when the other monks went to watch the arrival of the Dalai Lama in Karsha. Usually at least one boy from each Ladakhi family is required to become a monk from an age as early as 5.

With a "chapeau" to Sam Nimitz who recently reminded me of the possibilities of these wondrous little dandelion heads. Merci, mon ami !!

Ohhh, when will he come home?

“Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding line, and no way of knowing how near the harbor was. "Light! Give me light!" was the wordless cry of my soul, and the light of love shone on me in that very hour.” - Author Unknown

When we travel about adventuring Anita is Always prepared. She brings a cooler with water and a different assortment of food. We will never again find ourselves lost in the fog on the edge of a cliff in a national forest without food to sustain us. And in emergency situations like that there should always be plenty of chocolate and other sweet things to sustain one through tense moments of sheer terror while trundling along on the precipices of one track gravel roads, hence she includes a bag of chocolates and other kinds of sweet things. On this day she had a sweet tooth calling for something pepperminty and thought perhaps this piece would fit the bill perfectly. Not so! Turns out this beautifully twisted bit of sugar was nothing but ... well, twisted sugar with little to no flavor at all! It was banished to the trash bag and life went on without peppermint. It was the great disappointment of the day I can assure you! ;)
