Active & Passive voice of All English Tenses
What is the active voice? And how is it different from passive voice? We will cover all of the questions related to the active and passive voice in this article. So, without wasting time, let's get started.
Active voice
Def: - Active voice is that sentence in which the focus is on a sentence's subject. The subject of the sentence is the center of concentration. A subject is a person, thing, or idea that acts.
For example,
❖ (Ronaldo) plays soccer.
❖ (She) speaks multi-languages.
❖ (We) watch TV.
In the above examples, (Ronaldo), (She), and (We) are the subjects. They act, and the main focus is on them. We call such types of sentences Active voice.
Passive voice
Def: - Passive voice is that sentence in which the focus is on the object of a sentence. We use passive voice when we are interested in what is done rather than who has done it.
For example,
❖ A letter has been written by me.
In the above example, the speaker or writer emphasizes the importance of the action receiver (letter). Therefore, the object takes the place of the subject in a passive voice because of its importance. On the other hand, in the active voice, the focus is on the sentence's subject, and hence we put it first in the active voice.
In some cases, the doer is a known person, thing, or idea. We do not even need to name it.
For example,
❖ The thief has been caught.
In this example, everybody knows who catches a thief. I mean the police.
