To Support Displaced Youth from Fallujah

Inauguration of Temporary Premises of Fallujah University (Dorms and Classrooms)

in Abu Ghraib, Baghdad

On 23 June 2016, the temporary premises of Fallujah University, located inside the Veterinary College, Baghdad University in Abu Ghraib, were inaugurated. With the generous contribution from the Government of Japan, the temporary premises of Fallujah University were established by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) providing 25 classrooms and 128 residential units that can accommodate 512 students, in addition to basic site infrastructure and an administration building. The project aimed at supporting displaced youth who bear enormous and long-lasting human, social and economic costs.

His Excellency Mr. Sohaib Al-Rawi, Governor of Anbar, who attended the event, commented that while the Anbar Governorate has been supporting institutions displaced by violence outside and within Anbar, including Fallujah University, the ongoing financial crisis has affected all aspects of people’s lives and limited the government’s capacity to support. The Governor acknowledged the efforts of UN agencies and the ongoing support of UN-Habitat on housing self-repair and shelter projects within Ramadi. He expressed his gratitude to all those who stand with people of Iraq, and specifically of Fallujah, in the midst of the hardship they face.

On UN-Habitat’s side, Dr. Erfan Ali, Head of Iraq Programme, pointed out that lack of access to education among youth is one of the key factors that fuel a cycle of poverty, hopelessness and frustration. He expressed his hope that these new premises of Fallujah University will enable young women and men from Fallujah to continue their education and play an active role as agents of positive and constructive change.

Mr. Hirofumi Miyake, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, Embassy of Japan in Iraq, stated that Japan also has its own internally displaced persons, resulting from disasters of tsunamis, earthquakes, debris, and the latest nuclear accident, and therefore the people of Japan understand very well the importance of support to displaced persons in Iraq. He further emphasized that Japan will continue to sustain the efforts of UN-Habitat to improve the living conditions of the displaced persons in Iraq.

Dr. Ibraheem Abdulkareem, Deputy President of Fallujah University, stated that the completion of the new premises of Fallujah University has provided a glimpse of hope in the heart of displaced students, and he recognized that the inauguration is concomitant to the liberation of Fallujah.

On his part, Mr. Sattar Nawroz Khan, General Director of Migration at the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, praised the joint cooperation and partnership between multiple actors, including the Governments of Iraq and Japan, Anbar Governorate, Fallujah University, and UN-Habitat, that enabled the positive results of the overall project.

This project was implemented within the framework of larger programme titled “Humanitarian Support to Internally Displaced Persons in Iraq through Provision of Durable Shelter,” funded by the Government of Japan, aiming to improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons in Iraq through the provision of prefabricated durable shelters, and thereby to support and strengthen their self reliance.

The wasp was in the house so I used our go to method of capture and release: a plastic cup with a piece of cardboard covering the top. After it posed for a few pictures I took it outside and released it.

Art Interruptions, an annual temporary art program created by the Office of Arts & Culture in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation, will offer ephemeral moments of surprise and reflection in the Rainer Valley East-West Neighborhood Greenway. This area includes: New Holly, Othello, Brighton, Lakewood and Seward Park. Beginning September, seven temporary installations on view in the greenway from through January 2, 2017, will inspire and enliven the route with an element of the unexpected. Art Interruptions is funded by Seattle Department of Transportation 1% for Art funds.

The artworks range from street sign paintings to a collage fabricated entirely out of aluminum soda cans. The seven selected artists include Ruben David, Melissa Koch, Vikram Madan, Ulises Mariscal, Kemba N. Opio, little talia, and Junko Yamamoto. Working with the Seattle Department of Transportation and the Office of Arts & Culture, each artist designed a series of small-scale temporary artworks to be installed on city-owned street furniture and infrastructure, including signal boxes, utility poles, sidewalks, and street trees. (Several projects appear on private property adjacent to the right of way with permission of the property owners.) This year, six of the selected artists participated in the 2016 Public Art Boot Camp, a free two-day intensive basic training overview offered by the Office of Arts & Culture's Public Art Program offered to artists who are ready to translate their exhibition experience to the public realm.

The installations include a series of stencils featuring images of various community members that bring positivity to the pedestrians of the Greenway; tiny sculptures inspired by historic and present-day forms of transportation in Seattle; and a collage of butterflies representing cultural diversity.

The air conditioners in our pod at work went out so we got these amazing interim guys.

Beginning on the night of 23 March 1945, Operation Plunder was the crossing of the River Rhine at Rees, Wesel, and south of the Lippe River by the British 2nd Army, under Lieutenant-General Miles Dempsey, and the U.S. Ninth Army (Operation Flashpoint), under Lieutenant General William Simpson. XVIII U.S. Airborne Corps, consisting of the British 6th Airborne Division and the U.S. 17th Airborne Division, conducted Operation Varsity, parachute landings on the east bank in support of the operation. All of these formations were part of the 21st Army Group under Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. This was part of a coordinated set of Rhine crossings.

Often times, road/track construction necessitates the closure of a tram/streetcar line. However, when one of two parallel tracks is closed for such a reason, it is possible to use a temporary switch/crossover to allow continued bi-directional operations.

My 700d CR-18s are too worn to keep using (*sob*) so until I lace up one of the pairs of sl23s I've got lying around I'm going to be using these Stans ZTR355s. Which, sadly, are only temporary because there's a dent in the front DS rim wall from when I rammed a curb when dodging a jogger. I can still ride them (obviously), but there's a really annoying *thump-thump-thump* when I apply the front brake.

Maybe I'll take some metal-filled epoxy and fill that dent? It will grab differently than aluminum, but that will probably be less differently than air.

in a branchless forest populated with eager dialect, even/especially in these anxious times; these retired branches become crutches when congregated. and so like a bottle rocket flying right through our cutout hearts, let these words be everything we could ever want them to be, and these common fears a makeshift prosthesis to sedate our common phantom limbs.

(and when we can get our heavy hearts to love lightly, this house of cards will become a home.)

The bruising on my chest keeps getting better and better (for appropriate values of better) -- notice that right now it's helpfully highlighting my (lack of) cup size; there's just enough breast to get traumatically squashed but not enough to spread impacts out to the point where every single blood vessel in them doesn't immediately spring a leak.

HRT might help with that, but unless I can track down a time machine to start it in 2020 I'm just completely out of luck with it this time around.

Crews have made a temporary DOT facility on the Main St. to neatly organize all of the equipment. It will be here for now, until a building is "built." Once there is a building, I don't know what will happen.

The brand new cycle path between Balgreen and the Stenhouse tram bridge was laid with the most beautifully even and ripple-free surface. Now it has been cut into about 30 pieces for unspecified further work.

Each of these cutout sections is about 30mm deep and extends across the width of the path, and cold pour seals most of the edging. Most are roughly square in area but some are longer. They aren't spaced evenly from one to another, so they don't line up with either the lamp posts or the tram OLE posts. Nor do they link to other paths, so these cutouts presumably aren't for tactile paving or chicanes. That said, the eastbound gradient is good for 25-30mph.

I'm constantly blown away by the intricacies of nature. I love how fragile and beautiful spider webs are. How a spider knows how to make something so perfect is beyond me. And the thing that really amazes me is how temporary it is. I mean, I'll come back to this spot in a few days and the web will be gone. The web has a purpose, and when its purpose has been fulfilled, it's just abandoned and eventually destroyed.

The other day I went on a mission to find the bald eagle's nest along the Grand River in Brantford. As I approached the area I came upon this trail closure. Although disappointed I decided to honor the closure out of respect for the eagle's themselves. Perhaps one day I will return to see them flying freely in the demilitarized zone!

[ Ironically, the following article was posted in the Brantford Expositor 3 days after I took this pic! ]

Trail closed to protect bald eagles

MICHELLE RUBY, EXPOSITOR STAFF

February 28, 2009

A portion of the trail system in Waterworks Park along the Grand River has been temporarily closed to protect bald eagles in the area.

Signs alerting trail users of the closing have been put up in locations along the secondary trail in the park, Maureen Sinclair, director of Brantford Parks and Recreation, said Friday.

Sinclair said the city is acting on direction from the Ministry of Natural Resources. A spokesperson for the MNR was not available for comment.

Trail users are being asked to avoid disturbing the eagles, which are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Both provincial and federal laws make it illegal to disturb their habitat.

"They have not been in this part of the country for 30 or 40 years," said Sinclair. "We want to err on the side of caution."

Brantford's Tim Sywyk, along with his wife, Lisette, have been fighting to protect the bald eagles.

"I'm ecstatic," said Sywyk. "Our city has finally acknowledged that we have these birds in the area."

Sywyk said he was there when the signs were being erected earlier this week, adding that most people were being "very good" about respecting the trail closure once they understood the reason for it.

Sinclair said the closed portion of the trail is less than half a kilometre in length and the main trail remains wide open.

The posted signs ask trail users to: "Please protect Ontario's bald eagle population by honouring this temporary trail closure."

The signs will remain in effect until the end of May. Sinclair said city staff will continue to monitor the closure points until that time.

In southern Ontario, bald eagles have recovered from near extirpation in the early 1980s to establish a small, slowly increasing population. They have been seen along rivers including the Grand and the Thames.

"This is a gift because, as far as I'm aware, there hasn't been a bald eagle in Brantford or Brant County since about 1953," said Sywyk.

Michaels had a 70% off sale on all their Christmas stuff so I decided to pick up a third tree to add to my Christmas forest. In the store, the tree looked very "iffy" because it was all scrunched up, but with about 30 minutes of "unscrunching," it looked almost like a live tree. (I'm tempted to buy another at an after-Christmas sale.)

Best of all, the total cost of this tree -- including ALL the decorations: less than $10!!! I even got 10 miniature glass ornaments (Santas & snowmen) that look like old-world style blown glass. The only thing missing are lights, a tree skirt, and a "real" tree-topper. That will be for next year.

That's the rooming house I live in when I'm studying.
