This watercolour/digital piece is my attempt to visualise the streets of the capital of Karhide, a mythical country in a strange planet created by the Science Fiction novelist Ursula K. Le Guin, in her novel The Left Hand of Darkness. The shapes for these semi-humanoid people was inspired by an illustration in an art magazine. They are also influenced by Anthony Gormley's body-sculptures.
It is located on the planet, Winter, also known as Gethen and its inhabitants are known to as Gethenians. Winter is part of a parable, a metaphor for a very cold place There exist no men, or women, as the people of Winter are sexually neutral, until, that is, they enter the physiological state of "kemmer". When a Gethenian enters "kemmer", that person acquires a physical sexual identity, and even then only briefly.
Le Guin developed this idea out of a desire to explore what remained basic to human nature when biological gender was no longer a factor.
A large part of the novel is an exploration of a neuter society — a society in which sexual difference plays no role, although love and jealousy remain. Le Guin's most challenging assertion is that such a world would have no history of war: lacking a deep sense of duality implied by strong gender divisions, Gethenians lack a necessary component of nationalism. Their sense of us vs. them is strongly mitigated by their intuitive grasp that there is no real difference, that any distinction is at least somewhat arbitrary. However, they retain the capacity for personal aggression.
Gethenians in Karhide do possess an elaborate system of social prestige called shifgrethor, in which individuals jockey for position by subtle maneuvering — the exact kind of social conflict seen in homogeneous groups (compare office politics). The demonization of others is artificial and temporary; alliances shift easily, and prevailing cultural mores are determined and protected by the next clearest division between groups - geography.
Nations exist, and different places have different societies, but they blend at the edges. Low level raiding of indeterminate value preserves a sense of hostility and division that is useful for internal political purposes, but there is little real desire to actually conquer another nation. Indeed, the concept of full-scale war is unknown to Gethenian societies. But it seems possible that Gethen is now drifting towards a war between Karhide and Orgoreyn.
The Left Hand of Darkness is a significant milestone in the increasing sophistication of the treatment of sex in science fiction that developed in the 1970s.

During a bathroom remodel, I built this temporary shower setup in the basement. It's right next to the utility sink, so the water source and drain was close by. It helped that there was a mixer faucet on the sink!
Used zip ties to hold the hose/ garden nozzle up at the right height. Sprayed only to wet and to rinse.
After bathing, I used a sump pump and hose length to drain the kiddie pool into the sink.
For the three weeks without the regular bathroom, this really helped keep the peace!
