A nice quartet of switchers sits on the north side of the shops next to the highway. Check out the Penn Central lettering on the Conrail switcher showing through the paint!

The Switch was many things over the years; a restaurant, a bar, a cat house..... It was located on McCaskey Road in Williamston, NC. Sources told me it was torn down in late 60's or early 70's, I'm not sure. This photo was taken in the 40's by the late Eugene Rice.
I found out this guy was going at the end of a commute home. I smelled smoke, and looked down and saw a flame. I stomped on the flame reflexively, and that turned my high beams off since the flame was from the switch, ending the light show. Turns out the high beam contact was shorting to ground. The predecessor of this switch failed on me also, but it failed differently- it just knocked out my headlights- no smoke or fire.
