Burlington Northern Shop Switcher at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This shows the other side of the shop switcher, I'm not sure if this was the Engineer's side or the Conductor's side. It was powered by an extension cord ( not seen in this view ) which could be plugged at various locations around the shop.

March 11, 2012 (Sunday) - How does this switch represent my day? Well, about my only accomplishment of the afternoon was soaking in the hot tub.

In July of 2005 when I joined Flickr, I expanded my online presence by uploading a DAILY image to this special photo set. Ever since, I've faithfully added one per day. Doing this provides a direct record of my personal experiences. Of course, I started daily blogging in the fall of 2003 and my eJournal and images entries continue every single day as well.

I missed the Switch photo contest deadline by less than 30 minutes because I didn’t realise Korean time is ahead of ours oTL I thought I had enough time to finish up a faceup commission but I was wrong :c

Photo taken with an Apple 3GS iPhone.

This is the original photograph by Ricardo Napoli and the simple manipulation I used on the computer to make it paler. The pale image eliminated the details and showed only the lines and creases that I wanted to used in the quilt design. It was very simple once I thought of this process step.

All of the Artisans

________________________________________________

I'm just going to leave some more keyboard photos here. They're nothing super special, but the board was one that I built as a general purpose board; good in any environment, and black goes well with everything.

The switches aren't for everyone with the bottom-out force coming in a whopping 180g. For reference, most common Cherry switches weigh in at around 60-70g. The switches themselves are some NovelKeys Creams, which have a stock bottom-out of 70g. They are linear in nature, and feature a housing and stem made from Polyoxymethylene (POM), leading to an almost “self-lubricating” switch due to the low friction between the pints of contact. This helps to give the switch a very smooth feel out of the box, but I wanted to go even smoother, so out came the Krytox GPL 206g2 lube. The switch plate cut from brass, and polished off to a slick mirror finish, and the rest of the board was pretty much stock standard from the second round of the KBD8X MKI.

As far as dressing this thing up, it was always a matter of what I wanted to try out. It spent a while with GMK Laser on it, as well as a couple of R3 SA sets (Nuclear Data, and Danger Zone), and DSA Galaxy Class. But in reality, this is a jack of all trades, and has a great deal of flex to it, but not in the literal sense; the aluminium case, and brass plate make this rigid as all hell, and the board without any caps comes in at a total of 2.5kg.

I also figured that I'd throw some “artisan vomit” on the board, and show some love to artisan keycaps that I don't have on any boards as of yet. The biggest pain here was deciding how I wanted to place them, no matter what way you twisted it my OCD was triggered; maker and sculpt, colourway, theme, I just couldn't win.

Remnants of an abandoned track run parallel to the active one, and it appears that most of the ties here run under the ballast where a switch may have been located....

=============================================

Running from PRR's 25th Street line, this short stretch once accessed the "Mud Yard" as the company's Girard Point facilities were nicknamed due to being built from reclaimed marshland.

PRR operated a coal pier here along with the large Tidewater Grain complex (whose concrete silos stood derelict for over two decades before demolition began in late 2007)

Now reduced to one track, this line sees traffic serving the oil refineries that have gone up in the area....

An interesting assortment of switches.

Note the white port extending from the right of the switch. The switch gas will be fed in here. The black wire extending from below the switch is an alternative path to ground.
