A very unusual sunset tonight featuring a persistent shaft of light which grew noticeably larger as sunset approached.

Arizona, you might ask? Nope, this was taken in Hawaii on the summit of Kilauea. Some brilliant reds caused by the volcanic activity and accentuated by Velvia's exceptional handling of color.
I was at this resort exactly 5 years ago...and it was quite interesting to shoot from the same locations, but with a far greater photography knowledge :)
After a rainy day, the skies cleared just before the end of the day to provide a signature Tennessee Sunset. Just a short ride down the road from my house provided the perfect scene...gravel road with a puddle to reflect the sky, some fence, horses, and a field full of yellow flowers. Tennessee is, by far, one of the greatest states in America!!

This is what the sky looked like just after the sun had set this evening. Actually, the red was more intense and even redder than the photo shows. It was gorgeous, but it didn't extend very far up or to the south.
This was shot from a terrace in Astoria. The building intruding in the lower left is in that Queens neighborhood.
I had to crop this quite a bit, unfortunately. Next time, I'll keep a longer lens nearby. I also replaced the photo after reducing the noise a bit.
