A little change of pace from my typical import and exotic sports cars.
I used the shoot-through umbrellas/walls as reflectors. The confines were so close that even shooting through the umbrellas at low power was giving hot spots. This lit it a little softer and more evenly.
Was going to do a jumping shot, but didn't want to copy Jen again. I ended up pulling my 3 strobes out, 580ex, Lumopro 160, and Vivitar 273. Setting them all on my truck off camera left and firing them w/ Cybersyncs at FULL power. :)
With my friends here in Bergen...
1 off camera flash at the right side of the pic, 1/4 power, about 5 ft away... if i remember it right.. I used wireless triggers. Camera setting was 1/15 sec @ F 4.0 ISO 400. just used my kit lens on canon 450D.
can't wait for winter to see the effects of these strobes with snow on the ground... planning for 2 more strobes this coming winter..
First attempt at doing a strobe shot. Hard work! Realised it needs to be pretty dark... even ambient "nearby house" light at 1AM was too much. +1 for Syl Arena's excellent guides in The Speedliters Handbook though!

I only wish this movie could capture the animation as it is projected in human's mind when watching this up close in real life.
There is a LED enclosed at the left which flickers at the turntable's platter speed (eg. 33 1/3 RPM), which then results in one of the lines of dots appearing to be stationary.
In the case of 33 1/3 RPM, the largest dots appear not to be moving. Speeding up the turntable eventually causes the higher dots to stay, and vice versa.

B1600 at 1/2 power on Camera left w/ 40 degree Honeycomb Grid.
An experiment to see if I could capture water splashes using just a single SB900 strobe. Kept the power at 1/8th or less, to shorten the duration of the flash, thus freezing the action of the water. The flash was bounced off a white wall camera right. In retrospect I should have placed it a little further from the wall though, to get some more diffusion.
It took lots of tries to get the water to splash in the right way, and the final shot is a composite from the most succesful attempts.

So I'm still struggling with the age old dilemma... Quantum trio, Elinchrom RX, or speedlights.
Anyhow, long story short I was invited to see the difference between continuous and strobe and bumped into Mimi here. The nub of it, is that strobes are way better than continuous without a doubt, but are proportionately expensiver.
I'm booked on a training course later in March to run though the strobey basics, so I'll probably decide then.

This one is close to what I wanted minus the third strobe that should have been over head through a beauty dish but guess what... I don't have a third strobe nor do I have a beauty dish. So this is the best I could do!

I didn't expect to be shot by David Hobby today in fairness, but was totally stoked to be part of one of the demo shots in todays Strobist seminar. It took him all of about 5-6 minutes to set up and explain the shot you can see here, using no less than 6 individual flashes. (I won't be re-creating this one at home any time soon!)
Had to share this one... Alley ways were so tiny (3 people wide), it took 9 attempts to get this right but when I did, wow... it floored me. Must see large!
