This is a picture I took shortly after investing in a back drop kit. I decided to test the kit out while also testing the waters with my first baby shoot. Set up here was as simple as you can get. The black muslin backdrop was draped over a pillow so my model was nice and comfy the light was a single 550EX one a boom directly above in a soft box. Power was only 1/16 since I was able to work the light in so close.
I could have used a shoot through umbrella here but the soft box is a better tool when using a black background. It helps you control unwanted spill into the lens of your camera as well as keep the light off the background.
Set up is simple but just for the sake of consistence you can see the diagram here.

Here's my first try at strobing.
Was completely unprepared, so all I had to use as a strobe was my dad's Samsung Galaxy.

Taking advantage of the continuous autotracking and tethered shooting capabilities of my old Fuji S3. It did have quite a struggle to focus in the dark though, i had to shine a flashlight in my face so it could focus, then turn it off and flash. Wish i had a studio flash with modeling lamp.
For some reason the EXIF didn't go through the jpg conversion. So here it is:

A second go at the muppet shot with a small shoot-through brolly this time. The flash is blue-gel'd as before and the shot's colour balanced in-camera to throw the blue light back to white and the background to orange.
Played around with the flash I borrowed from Arif and I have no idea how to strobe. I went out to the garage and played around and happened to get a nice shot.
Next time, I should do my homework :(

Cross illumination based on a 580EX on right (1/8 power) diffused via a shoot-throug white umbrella, a bare Vivitar on left @ 1/16 power
Camera on tripod, remote release (that's why left hand is not in the scene).

edited in DPP and sharpened in Gimp.
Please notice the different shape of the shadows, cause by a bare and a diffused light

Test Shot for lighting set-up at camera club. The only shot I took all evening.
Lighting: Single Quantuum 300 W/S strobe @ 1/32nd power into gridded and double diffused 120x80cm Soft-Box (Speed-Box, brolly-type, similar to a Westcott Apollo), triggered by RadioPopper JRx's.
Debs & I set the lights up at at CC for the members to have a play with.
2 set-ups on the night. 2 x 600 W/S Quantuums and 2 x 300 W/S Quantuums triggered by either RF-602's or RadioPopper JRx's. Some of us even ventured outside to shoot some flash/ambient mixed shots.
Okay! NOW I am ready for some serious studio work. I just unpacked - and took a few test shots with - my brand spankin' new Flashpoint 620, a 300 watt-second studio strobe. I can't wait for the next studio subject!!

If you are familiar with the Take a Class with Dave and Dave group, then you know how it started. Well, as one of my Christmas presents, Dave signed me up for that same class! Sadly the other Dave is not teaching it, but I'll take hanging out socially over that anyday - he and his lady are fun!
Anyway, this is one for my week 1 assignments - yep, all 4 assignments are exactly the same as Dave had in HIS week 1, ONE YEAR AGO next week! I have to admit, I am not SUPER thrilled with my results - I took 3 of the 4 tonight because I was a slacker and kept forgetting! The 4th is a 365 extra, and I was not planning on using it, but I think it fits the assignment well.
