The Odd Ball
Artist Statement: My work is made up of spheres with different designs within them with one of the spheres being more eye catching than the others. That's where the name comes into play, The Odd Ball. The subject of this task was to create something surreal and to have fun with what I was going for. The most obvious elements of this piece are the zig zag and curved lines, texture and value. I created my art using round objects, such as cans, rolls of tape, lotion tops, and different media. The media consisted of Sharpies mostly, color pencils, and very light shading on the egg in the bottom right using a #2 pencil. To get the correct amount of value on the page, I had to smear the sharpie. To be completely frank, there wasn't much that inspired me to do this other than stress and not understanding the task at hand for sometime. So, that dictated what was drawn and the feelings that I had towards it. This caused me to express stress and pressure while having a little fun with color towards the end. In the end, the goal that I placed upon myself for this assignment was to at least learn how to properly improvise and still make the piece look presentable. What's ridiculous is that this came out to be my favorite piece that I've made because of time constraints that I put on myself and the efficiency in the different designs, which helped me reach my goal. From all that was said, I learned how to improvise and make it look presentable, add value using Sharpies, and learn how to work within the lines of surrealism. The final piece came out to be a surprise to me, but it wasn't surprisingly bad because it feels great to look at. This piece will influence my future work by making me work harder in which one day I'll make something better than this.
Greater Manchester Police is deploying Project Servator in the City Centre during the weeks leading up to Christmas.
Project Servator will see officers working with partners to target offenders of all levels, from petty criminals to terrorists. Project Servator tactics include highly visible patrols that can turn up anywhere and at any time across the city.
They will involve both uniformed and plain clothes officers, who are specially trained to spot the tell-tale signs that a person is planning or preparing to commit a criminal act, as well as a range of other tactics including search dogs and horses, police vehicles and utilising CCTV across the city centre.
Officers will also be encouraging security staff, retailers and the public to be extra eyes and ears and report anything that doesn’t feel right.
You should call 101, the national non-emergency number, to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response.
Always call 999 in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, violence is being used or threatened or where there is danger to life.
You can also call anonymously with information about crime to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity who will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.

Artist statement:
'By using pre-existing media as a starting point, certain boundaries are set by the material, which I aim to transform through my process. Thus, an encyclopedia can become a window into an alternate world, much like lived reality becomes its alternate in remembered experience.
These books, having been stripped of their utilitarian value by the passage of time, regain new purpose. They are no longer tools to learn about the world, but rather a means to gain insight about oneself.
I make book sculptures / cut books by working through a book, page by page, cutting around some of the illustrations while removing others. The images seen in the finished work, are left standing in their original place.'

As a student of the UCA, I have worked in an environment where the possibilities of what I can conceive and realise in artworks have been greatly expanded. In this portfolio I want to show: a glimpse into my work-in-progress; my independent thinking and my ambition for projects that go beyond the academic minimum. Alongside coursework, this portfolio contains self-initiated explorations under the theme ‘Death of The Author’. In this process, I am discovering how intention can be relinquished in the face of an audience, and how as an artist I absolve myself from the process of creating.
I am interested in art that isn't subjective to the artist’s idioms, beginning with Koons’ vacuum cleaners, exemplified in Hirst’s work, and most recently with Weiwei’s expansive ‘ensemble’ sculptures. I see art to be continually moving away from craftsmanship and a means of personal expression, to a more manufactured way of creating characterised by a more universal code of reflection towards common subject matter. One of my favourite artists is Picasso, though it is said of artists like him that all his work is self-portraiture. I am exploring how to absolve the idiosyncrasies of my work, and let my subjects speak for themselves, as in Warhol’s famous 4d film portraits.
I have done this with my random circle canvases, where the responsibility of composition was given to a computer. Other works try to update the artworks that I love to the environment that I feel I live in – such as the woodblock-inspired, digital-looking Geisha painting, and the marble-statue-esque mannequin, revered for her consumerist example of what a customer’s body should/could look like. In these pieces I am looking at how to find balance in communicating a message; the explicitness with which I should express my themes; the simplicity that I should exercise to make it aesthetic and accessible; and retaining specificity within the simplicity, to make sure I don’t compromise clarity.
I have a broad range of influences and interests, and although I have developed an ability to resolve certain projects well, I have many unresolved components of my practice. The opportunity to study Fine Art Critical Practice at the University of Brighton, with its equal emphasis on the critical understanding of art as well as the practice, would seem ideally suited to the way I work. The fact that these disciplines benefit from being integrated by the same tutors is something that I think would be especially valuable for me.

Artist statement: Library checkout cards with signatures of past readers are spied through peepholes in a book that cannot be opened. Readers’ habits under surveillance refer to the United States Patriot Act, through which personal records can be searched without warrant. Old book covers suggest the nostalgia of history and lessons about patriots as American heroes defending liberty. The Patriot Act, enacted through fear, expanded the ability of the government to spy on its own citizens, bringing up echoes of the McCarthy era in its questioning of who is a terrorist. The sense of the word patriot has been twisted in the Orwellian title, “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism.” The original American patriots were considered traitors and risked hanging to fight for liberty. Are you now, or have you ever been, a patriot?
