Back in 2016 when Felix and I submitted this project reaching 10k was merely a dream but now thanks to you it has come true.

Our FIAT 500 will have completed its journey successfully and stuck the landing of the "10k jump". Admittedly, it's not been an easy journey and over the past two years we had our doubts if we could make it in time. All the more we want to thank each and every one of you who supported, commented and shared so we could get there in the end. We really hope you like the improvements we've made to the initial design over the course of time in the update section. We've always tried our best to keep the updates as exciting and interesting as possible.

What comes next?

As most of you undoubtedly already know our project will now move on into what's called the LEGO Ideas review. Three times a year LEGO evaluates all the projects that reached 10k independently and checks whether they've got what it takes to become an official set. This review process usually takes a few months. We don't want to get our hopes up but the fact that LEGO approved the Caterham Seven at least shows there would be a market for relatively large scale car models.

Shortly after we reach 10k the comment thread as well as the update section will be locked. You're most welcome to follow Gabriele and me on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube though to avoid missing out on further news.

Before this happens though we want to thank a few people/groups personally.

Special thanks to:

SavetheBrick and MichielsMum aka Heleen for their continued interest and kind comments,

Nicolas Jarraud aka Scrubs who created the fantastic online LEGO CAD-software Mecabricks without which this collaboration would not have been possible,

KovJonas who created a wonderful spreadsheet to keep track of the support history of our project and also helped us with promoting,

Michael Klein aka Renderbicks who inspired our 3D presentations and gave us very useful tips,

The entire Fiat 500 Club Italia for their support and enthusiasm.

And finally all the LEGO fan clubs and websites who featured our project and made this possible.

Thank you for sharing this adventure with us and we hope it's been just as fun of a ride for you as it has been for us.

***************

This set of photos is based on a very simple concept: walk every block of Manhattan with a camera, and see what happens. To avoid missing anything, walk both sides of the street.

That's all there is to it …

Of course, if you wanted to be more ambitious, you could also walk the streets of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. But that's more than I'm willing to commit to at this point, and I'll leave the remaining boroughs of New York City to other, more adventurous photographers.

Oh, actually, there's one more small detail: leave the photos alone for a month -- unedited, untouched, and unviewed. By the time I actually focus on the first of these "every-block" photos, I will have taken more than 8,000 images on the nearby streets of the Upper West Side -- plus another several thousand in Rome, Coney Island, and the various spots in NYC where I traditionally take photos. So I don't expect to be emotionally attached to any of the "every-block" photos, and hope that I'll be able to make an objective selection of the ones worth looking at.

As for the criteria that I've used to select the small subset of every-block photos that get uploaded to Flickr: there are three. First, I'll upload any photo that I think is "great," and where I hope the reaction of my Flickr-friends will be, "I have no idea when or where that photo was taken, but it's really a terrific picture!"

A second criterion has to do with place, and the third involves time. I'm hoping that I'll take some photos that clearly say, "This is New York!" to anyone who looks at it. Obviously, certain landscape icons like the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty would satisfy that criterion; but I'm hoping that I'll find other, more unexpected examples. I hope that I'll be able to take some shots that will make a "local" viewer say, "Well, even if that's not recognizable to someone from another part of the country, or another part of the world, I know that that's New York!" And there might be some photos where a "non-local" viewer might say, "I had no idea that there was anyplace in New York City that was so interesting/beautiful/ugly/spectacular."

As for the sense of time: I remember wandering around my neighborhood in 2005, photographing various shops, stores, restaurants, and business establishments -- and then casually looking at the photos about five years later, and being stunned by how much had changed. Little by little, store by store, day by day, things change … and when you've been around as long as I have, it's even more amazing to go back and look at the photos you took thirty or forty years ago, and ask yourself, "Was it really like that back then? Seriously, did people really wear bell-bottom jeans?"

So, with the expectation that I'll be looking at these every-block photos five or ten years from now (and maybe you will be, too), I'm going to be doing my best to capture scenes that convey the sense that they were taken in the year 2013 … or at least sometime in the decade of the 2010's (I have no idea what we're calling this decade yet). Or maybe they'll just say to us, "This is what it was like a dozen years after 9-11".

Movie posters are a trivial example of such a time-specific image; I've already taken a bunch, and I don't know if I'll ultimately decide that they're worth uploading. Women's fashion/styles are another obvious example of a time-specific phenomenon; and even though I'm definitely not a fashion expert, I suspected that I'll be able to look at some images ten years from now and mutter to myself, "Did we really wear shirts like that? Did women really wear those weird skirts that are short in the front, and long in the back? Did everyone in New York have a tattoo?"

Another example: I'm fascinated by the interactions that people have with their cellphones out on the street. It seems that everyone has one, which certainly wasn't true a decade ago; and it seems that everyone walks down the street with their eyes and their entire conscious attention riveted on this little box-like gadget, utterly oblivious about anything else that might be going on (among other things, that makes it very easy for me to photograph them without their even noticing, particularly if they've also got earphones so they can listen to music or carry on a phone conversation). But I can't help wondering whether this kind of social behavior will seem bizarre a decade from now … especially if our cellphones have become so miniaturized that they're incorporated into the glasses we wear, or implanted directly into our eyeballs.

If you have any suggestions about places that I should definitely visit to get some good photos, or if you'd like me to photograph you in your little corner of New York City, please let me know. You can send me a Flickr-mail message, or you can email me directly at ed-at-yourdon-dot-com

Stay tuned as the photo-walk continues, block by block ...

Atrina Center, Athens – Architect Ioannis Vikelas

Presenting a series of buildings on the routes of ATHENS ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY Workshop, Nov. 23-26/27 (Full Workshop Description and sign up here: goo.gl/wd4Gh

Not my usual kind of image, but a moment I liked a lot and thought that it was worth a still shot. Of course, there is also the LE version waiting to be processed and will be out as well, hopefully soon.

One of the landmarks of Athens, this building is designed by the same architect that designed the Athens Towers, of which I have already posted two shots: A Path to the Sky I -The Tower and also A Path to the Sky II -The Sky Beyond , both awarded with Honorable Mention at the IPA 2012, and just like the towers, this building is a high-rise structure, very slim and elegant, highly suited for dynamic compositions taken from very near to the building, as this shot, as well as from further away. And of course for LE shots, even if this shot isn't one. I so much loved this cloud resting just above the building, it seemed almost mystical to me, especially that it came out of nowhere, on a hot summer day, with a perfect clear blue sky. All the clouds I had that day came and went in a matter of half an hour or less. Just the time for me to take a few shots and leave. Happily I had the tripod and everything with me, so I didn't miss the occasion. Bears mentioning that the security people of this building were extremely nice and even wanted to help me with shooting.

So, closing the parenthesis and back to the building. It is comprised of three prismatic volumes of different heights, the highest rising at about 8om, creating a very interesting structure that overlooks the area and can be seen from afar. It has a metallic structure, combined with concrete elements and wrapped into a tinted dark glass and metal façade, that can give either very interesting reflections, or a rich matte dark blue hue, depending on the position of the camera.

I'll be posting more photos of different Athens buildings that will be on the routes of the Workshop, here but also on my G+ and Facebook stream, to give an idea about what we are going to see and shoot in November. Hope you'll like them and if yes, you're welcome to Register here for the workshop as well.

Have a good weekend everyone! :)

Another Double Railway Day and I decided to go to the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) in the morning and I can move onto the Mid Norfolk Railway (MNR) in the afternoon. It is only about 50 minutes by car between the 2 railways.

When I arrived at Dereham Station on the Mid Norfolk Railway (MNR), there were 2 Locomotives operating.

Here, at Dereham Station, GWR 813 is posing for Photographs with a few freight wagons.

Today children, we are looking through the….…errm……derelict window!

Now settle down quickly and we’ll begin.

Lindsey, please stop flicking ink pellets at Mya! You know she promised to bring Pakora’s in for us. You will see Miss Trunchbull at break and be prepared to be hurled out of the window!

And why have you brought that extremely large measuring cylinder in? If I weren’t mistaken, I would think it was a yard of wine glass!

Edward Coulson, please may we have your attention and when we do, I would like you to explain to your classmates the fascination in staring at the 5 people standing at the bus stop in the pouring rain!

Brian, Brian, Brian, what does it say on the door?

Yes, it says ‘classroom’. It does not say ‘Petting Zoo! In future please leave your farmyard animals at home. I would also ask if you really consider pink wellies appropriate footwear for a juvenile pig?

Honestly a horse and a pig! And what on earth is that steaming pile behind your desk?

Miss Hedman, yes, yes, yes, you can be pencil monitor next week.

Master Rouse, for the N’th time (where N is a prime integer), please put your spreadsheet and slide rule away. You’ll be pleased to know that we will be studying equilateral triangles later.

Your task for today is to match the above images to the following creatures. Please note there may be more than one correct answer to an image.

A Dumbo

B Sea Lion

C Dragon

D Sloth

E Chow Dog

F Lesser Spotted Eejit

G Angry Bird

F Knight of the Round Table

G Gymnast

As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

There were 2 Visiting Engines and some of 5 of the Home Fleet Locomotives scheduled to run on an intensive timetable.

Here, on my first Steam Heritage Railway Visit of 2022, 52044 is resting at Keighley Station before becoming part of the motive power for a shuttle journey to Ingrow West and back.

52044, is a Barton Wright and Aspinall designed and Bayer-Peacock built 0-6-0, originally for the L&Y as no 957, later renumbered 12044 for the LMS and 52044 for BR.

52044 was the locomotive used as "The Green Dragon" in the 1970 film "The Railway Children".

The Wainwrights are the 214 fells (hills and mountains) described in A. Wainwright's seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells (1955–66). Over two million copies of the Pictorial Guides have been sold worldwide since their publication.

But not to me... I just went walking in the Lakes a lot and sort of did them all by chance. I had a friend, sadly passed away now, who was an obsessive ticker and list fanatic and I just went wherever I was told.

We got to all sorts of obscure places when he decided he felt the need to visit every single spot height and contour ring over 1,000 feet in the Lakes.... he did them all, I even still have his spreadsheet somewhere with all of them on if anyone fancies a challenge?

A Photo from Day 2 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

At Didcot Railway Centre, their "Diamond Jubilee Gala" had 4 steam locomotives with 2 each on the "Main Demonstration Line" and the shorter "Branch Line." 2 diesels powered some early morning and evening trains.

Several Steam Locomotives were also on Static Display and it was possible to go round the sheds.

Here, 2999 - "Lady of Legend", a 4-6-0 built in between 2009 and 2019 is in steam and will run on the main Demonstration Line but has moved onto the Turntable for a Demonstration of the Turntable.

2999 was built in such a way that it can be a 4-4-2 or as here a 4-6-0 version of the GWR 2900 "Saint" Class, None of which survived into Preservation. Some parts from Hall or Manor Locomotives were used in the build to an original Churchward design.

The Severn Valley Railway (SVR) runs trains along a 16 mile Heritage line from Kidderminster station to Bridgenorth station .Highly is one of the stations along the line and there is The Engine House Museum there.

The day I went during the sort of main summer holidays, there were 4 steam Locomotive running on various Steam Excursions where due to Covid19, Compartments were being sold to families and there were some tables for groups of 2 or 4 people but nothing really suitable for the solo traveler.

Here, near Highley Station, I got my last photo of this visit to the Severn Valley Railway which was of 1501 as it was approaching the Station.

1501 is a Hawksworth designed GWR "15xx Class" 0-6-0PT loco which was built at Swindon Works.

I've been trying to get a picture of a bee on this for ages. So often the ones I am familiar with have flowers that are a bit too high. These ones in Dundee were all at head height or lower. Made for an enjoyable 10 minutes with the camera! Such a beautiful heady scent too - i hadnt realised that before!

Orange pollen load on view.

I think I might have misjudged Foma Retropan 320. I wanted to develop a roll yesterday and couldn't find any straight info on what the time for Rodinal 1+50 would be, one person says 11 min, another - 17 min. Official Foma spreadsheet doesn't recommend Rodinal for this film, probably because they advertise it as "fine grain". All results from this film I found through my online research were everything but fine grain. Anyway, I had no other choice but to throw the film in the usual 1+100 dilution and give it an hour to develop. It came out a bit foggy, the base is greyish, instead of clear and transparent. The real surprise came this morning, after scanning it with a my old dying Canon. The dark tones are to my liking, the black is rich and the grain is indeed retro. Only downside I find is the softness, but then again it's called Retropan 320 soft. It's probably not a good choice for portraits, although I gonna give that a try out of curiosity.
