I'm back from vacation and time do do some photographs. Vaki Kvaki has become one of my new fun finds store. Mainly because the designer does these incredible textures that make me wish this came in Real Life Sizes!!! The Dina outfit from Vaki Kvaki comes in 20+ colors available for both the Top and Skirt. But this crazy neon Greenish color is what popped for me. The skirt has a leathery/foil like look to it with ombre coloring. What's not to like about it.

Neighbor: “Howdy! How are you and Steve?”
Wife: “I’m good, but Steve is in his office looking cross-eyed at his computer and chanting something about ‘I want more Faves.’”
Neighbor: “Huh?”
Wife: “He’s sorting and re-sorting all the photos he took on our vacation and ranking which ones to post in his vacation slide show based on a spreadsheet that predicts which ones will get the most “Faves.”
Neighbor: “Really? What is going into his 'Favorites analytics?'”
He is rating eye-catchability scores, creating most unusualness tiers, and developing predictive categories of what he thinks other people will prefer.”
Neighbor: “Not what HE likes the most? Sounds obsessive.”
Wife: “He’s like a Bench-Gollum pursuing the precious ‘Fave’ ring.”
Neighbor: “So what’s he going to do with more ‘Faves’ if he gets them?”
Wife: “Good question. Nothing I guess, but he’s always after them.”
Neighbor: “Do you think that adds to his enjoyment of Flickr…or takes away?
Wife: “Another good question. He wants them badly, but the funny thing is when he DOES talk about Flickr, “Faves” is not what he mentions.”
Neighbor: “What does he mention?”
Wife: “Well, he’s tells me about some funny comment he read, or a great photo he saw, or an idea from seeing someone else’s work. I never heard the end of it when someone dedicated a bench photo to him.”
Neighbor: “So Steve actually has friends?”
Wife: “I know, that’s surprising. The funny thing is he has friends he’s never actually met. Some share birds he’s never seen, some share sketches and paintings, and others share what they ate for dinner. He seems to enjoy it all. He even ‘knows’ some on-line pets he cares about.
Neighbor: “But his goal is to get more ‘Faves’?”
Wife: “I guess…”
Neighbor: “As a casual observer it seems like he has a great deal of fun with the ‘Happy Bench Monday’ crowd and writing his silly stories.”
Wife: “Yes, he loves it when people actually read them.”
Neighbor: “But ironically the HBM photos get fewer ‘Faves’ than the landscape, wildlife and macro photos he posts.”
Wife: “Yeh, that’s true.”
Neighbor: “So it’s really the conversations, encouragement, and community that he enjoys – more than just accumulating views and ‘Faves’.
Wife: “Very wise neighbor. I wonder if he will ever figure that out?”
Neighbor: “Maybe, but that will require some maturity.”
Wife: “So…no then?”
Neighbor: “Well, I guess anything’s possible. What are you thinking?”
Wife: “HHBM!”
Neighbor: “Huh?”
Wife: “Hopeful Happy Bench Monday!”

The word from corporate is to shelter in place and work from home. And Jasper has graciously offered to do some spreadsheet analysis for me while comfortably relaxing on our home office couch. He does a great job, though I’m not sure Health and Safety would approve of his workstation ergonomics.
Bench Obsession - Chapter 4
Neighbor: “Hi Neighbor!”
Wife: “Oh hi, how are you?
Neighbor: “I’m great. Say, how did that Kiwi bench photo thing go last Monday? Did they figure out that Steve didn’t actually go to New Zealand over the weekend to take that shot?”
Wife: “Everyone knew, but I don’t think anyone cared.”
Neighbor: “So did any bench photos make… Expand…Expose…Expect…”
Wife: “Explore.”
Neighbor: “Yeh, that’s it.”
Wife: “No, but he still thinks bench photos should dominate explore and he’s not giving up. He’s still plotting and scheming.”
Neighbor: “Plotting and scheming?”
Wife: “Yeh, he spent all night working on excel using AI. He collected data and created spreadsheets, graphs, charts and trend lines. He had a control chart with standard deviations and was mumbling something about correlation is not causation."
Neighbor: “So did he come up with some overarching string theory to unify all the fundamental forces that make up a great bench photo?"
Wife: ::sigh:: “He thinks so.”
Neighbor: “So tell me this brilliant new scientific revelation?”
Wife: ::clears throat:: “More is Better.”
Neighbor: “His great hypothesis is ‘more is better’?”
Wife: “Yup. More is better.”
Neighbor: ::rolls eyes:: “Elaborate.”
Wife: “Well, he figures that if you post a photo with one nice bench on it, it gets a set number of views. For round numbers, let’s say 100. So two nice benches in the same photo gets you twice as many, or 200 views. 3 benches = 300, 4 benches = 400 and so on. With enough benches multiplying the total views, the image can’t be ignored.”
Neighbor: “So, did he get a photo with lots of benches?”
Wife: “Yeh. When we were in Kansas he took one. Dodge City is a historic cowboy town where buffalo hunters roamed and where the old TV show ‘Gunsmoke’ was based. They have a place where they reenact old western gun fights and such, and there were a lot of benches there."
Neighbor: “Do you think that will work?”
Wife: “Of course not.”
Neighbor: “Did you tell him?”
Wife: “Uh huh.”
Neighbor: “What did he say?
Wife: “Happy Bench(es) Monday!"

Beaches of the Central Coast #23 of #49
Thanks for your visit and to everyone who takes the time to comment. They are all greatly appreciated.
A mate & I vowed to explore all 49 beaches nestled along our little stretch of coastline this year. While I've tested the water at a fair wack of them over the years, I'm sure there are still some hidden gems awaiting discovery. So, 2024 is a fresh start to visiting them all. And maybe another couple of dozen or so just to the North ;) I have a spreadsheet ready to go to record important details, like when, how hard it was to get to, difficulty, and was there a pub nearby for a nice counter lunch afterwards ;)
I may have become a bit impatient today and headed off by myself. I was caught between workouts and the sky was filling with some nice-looking clouds, so I seized the opportunity to explore Forresters Beach, a virgin beach for me. And only 20 minutes from home! I was expecting a "busy" beach but was pleasantly surprised by its tranquility and relative emptiness. It is an unpatrolled beach with rocky formations framing each end. I opted for the southern end. As luck would have it, it was low tide, giving me some cool rock shelves to wander around clicking the shutter like my finger had a mind of its own.
As I walked along, I encountered some exciting (to me anyway) sights. I'll try and make it sound more exciting ;) - a tapestry of seaweed sprawled across the sands, clusters of vibrant blue bottles offering me their sting, and pockets of dune flowers adding a pop of color to the coastal landscape. Forresters Beach, I'll be back! The northern end awaits, as does a sunrise. Without a 1-hour time limit.
PS - Not going to visit them in order, that would be a bit too organised for me ;)
This pelican isn’t flying it’s auditing the sky. Wings locked in a posture that screams “I’m not here for your nonsense,” it glides through the blue like a bureaucrat of the breeze. Every feather is a spreadsheet, every wingbeat a memo to gravity reminding it who’s in charge.

I think this pandemic has gotten to Jasper. During the first lockdown last spring, Jasper would help out, doing spreadsheets for me or whatever (see first comment). But on Friday, I was working away in my home office and I turned around to see Mr. Lazy Bones on an extended break. It's OK. It's probably good to have someone behind me, supervising.
You ever get that look from someone who’s silently judging your life choices? Yeah, this dove invented it.
Perched on a branch like it owns the HOA, this bird radiates the kind of energy that says, “You really wore those shoes today?” The puffed chest, the perfect feather layering, the piercing red‑ringed eyes it’s giving “celestial auditor” vibes.
It’s not just a dove; it’s a managerial presence. The kind that shows up uninvited to your lunch break and asks if you’ve “updated the spreadsheet.” The kind that’s seen things. The kind that’s disappointed in you, but still rooting for your redemption arc.
The cracked bark beneath it? That’s not a branch that’s its throne. The blue sky behind it? That’s the backdrop for its TED Talk titled “Why You’re Doing Life Wrong.”

I’ve not written a personal piece for such a long time, and this is going to be either a major moan or a Jerry Maguire own goal… so here goes!!!
I would say Flickr peaked roundabout 2017/18 and has been on the decline ever since. My own spreadsheet stats confirm that (yes, I know I’m a fully paid-up anorak) but numbers don’t lie. Maybe I’ve haven’t posted enough images or interacted enough with my contacts over the last few years that has led to this viewpoint. I’ll stay clear of the Explore debate as that’s a can of worms within Pandora’s box.
So, on a positive note, I set out this year to make amends, firstly with posting more and trying to comment daily which I’ve failed at miserable already. I’m maintaining at least two images a week, occasionally three, but it feels tiresome (I must post this today or I’ll fail to maintain my two average). I’ve always been a task/goal orientated person mainly because of my engineering/manufacturing background but after the click of the shutter that’s where the enjoyment wanes. I’ve not even been impressed with my own uploads this year, but as I said earlier, a task driven exercise to post more weekly. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll never quit on photography, but my goals have changed. Some of you might know I’m also building a model railway layout in my loft (anorak Mk2) and that probably accounts for 50% of my free time with 10% for photography leaving a massive 40% of CBA (the WhatsApp group will know all about that).
I’ve taken to looking back through my archives and found images that help keep the flame alight and that I have taken good images over the years, but again posting on social media doesn’t cut it for me at this moment in time. I think it comes down to the community and contacts here of Flickr that keeps me going – you can forget TikTok, Instagram and Facebook for that level of interaction. Only yesterday I watched Mark Waidson’s video on his recent trip to Glencoe and I found that uplifting and my flame burned a little brighter. Hopefully the trip to Bamburgh in a weeks’ time and the meetup in the Lakes the following week will help increase that 10%.

Alternative titles for this could have been... "the best-laid plans of mice and men"... "a funny thing happened on the way to the castle" or more in keeping with one of my own idiosyncrasies..."not a full spreadsheet!". The plan was simple... reccy the area Friday night, take some shots for the sunset/blue hour. Go for a meal and a few drinks and back to the Prem Inn - not forgetting to set the alarm for the following morning. Tick, tick, tick!
The alarm went off at 5am; clothes already laid out and gear packed; out of the hotel at 5:10am; Mrs R not disturbed... too much!. It's well less than 10mins to the castle so I thought I'd walk through the harbour to the castle wall, along the front past the Anglesey Arms and on to the castle itself and the footbridge to the other side.
Sunrise wasn't scheduled until 5:56am but had to clear the mountains first giving me plenty of time to setup, get a few first light/blue hour shots and then as the sun cleared the tops would hopefully kiss the castle walls with some beautiful golden light.
Only problem... footbridge left in the open position to let the early fishing boats out!
No wonder I never get any work done, but it's so much more fun to sit here with a camera and a subject rather than another g-d spreadsheet...
Windex is my go-to both for cleaning the glass and for creating the bokeh...
All it takes is a few steps off the earth and into the water. Another life exists out in the waves, a life where there are no emails, no spreadsheets. A life where dolphins and seals still play and the ocean provides all that you need.

I completed a couple of projects last year. In January 2021, Larry and I started a project to achieve 65 summits in the year I turned 65, and we completed that one in September. Over the years, we have travelled throughout Canada, and recently we were thinking about whether we had visited each and every Province and Territory, there are 13. With our trip to the Yukon in 2021, we realized we had indeed visited each one. This year, I thought I would keep track of the different birds I see over the year, and see what kind of number that brings. For me, different means different, and so it won't be an exact species count, as in some species, the males and females are more-or-less identical, and in others they different, and so I will count the males and females in those species as different birds. With Northern Flickrs, there are distinct variations, based on under-feather colourings, with Red-shafted, Yellow-shafted variations, and a hybrid of the two. For this project, I'll count each variation if there is one, and each of the different genders if they are visually different, as different birds. As with my summit project, I'll maintain a thorough spreadsheet. Wish me luck! PS I may turn it into a post-one-a-day project, except the photos won't necessarily be taken on different days. Today I have already four different birds done, but will post the rest over the next few days...
