The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) sits high on a mesa above the town of Boulder, Colorado. On the left of the scene, the setting sun is breaking through low clouds that are providing a dusting of early-season snow to the Flatiron formation that rises behind NCAR.

Immediately prior to capturing this photo, I was upstairs in my home office working, where I've been ensconced since March 2020 due to the pandemic. I happened to glance out the window where I noticed some dramatic interaction between cloud and light. I figured a quick break from project work might be beneficial, so I grabbed my long, telephoto lens and wandered across the street to the large open field near our home. After a brief respite, it was time to return to spreadsheets, documents, and email.

The secret world of the STS

Back by popular demand, another instalment of STS: Who Dares Shoots.

We left our recruits settling in to their sparse barracks and a hearty meal pre-prepared by C2 and C6. Unbeknown to the recruits, the DTs had already made contact with a field agent who had been planted in the Isle and had been living amongst the local population for many years for just such an operation. We cannot print their callsign only refer to them as candidate C8, but for those in the know they belong to the genus Mustela of the family Mustelidae. Members of this genus are small, active predators... enough said, too much information!

Whilst out on manoeuvres at the bottom of the lane from the barracks shooting Loch Cill Chriosd or Loch Creosote as the recruits affectionately renamed it. A military transporter, not too dissimilar to those of the recruits, but capable of carrying far more equipment pulled up beside the shooting range. Out got field agent C8 and introduced ***self. C2, clearly fancied himself as team leader for the day and ventured across to meet C8... introductions followed, Robotog, Spreadsheet, Red Cap, Naga, Snoozey and I’m here all week!

Everyone continued shooting for another hour or so, or maybe it was the thought of the full Scottish and bacon/sausage barms that started the rumblings and curtailed the shoot. Back at the barracks the recruits discussed operation locations while gorging on the sumptuous breakfast feast, not knowing whether they would ever have the opportunity for sustenance again... would it be 7pm or 8pm?

C8 proved to be a godsend for the group offering never seen before locations here on Flickr... although many called for an arduous hike to reach them – like this location, an exhausting 30 mins yomp from the barracks – even the Royal Marines would wince at the thought, but not the STS! C8 also proved to be a bit of a mountain goat with fell-runner lungs and the groups “competitive” members... namely C5 and C6 struggled to keep pace and in order to bag the best spots first, not that there were any shortages of compositions but enthusiasm does get the better of some recruits – something the DTs will have to keep an eye on.

The manse proved to be an ideal testing ground for the new recruits, the light was good but not the point of the exercise - constantly peppered with rain, howling winds that attempted to write off equipment and for good measure the occasional hail storm. Duration was the name of the game and as the light faltered indecisions meandered throughout the group... should we move on or stick it out for sunset. The weaker members of the team withdrew one by one with lame excuses... “just nipping back, not sure if I put those beers in the fridge” and “damn it, last battery just died” a rookie mistake if there was ever one.

The recruits are whittled down to three – only C4, C6 and C7 remain to sit it out for sunset... that will bode well with the DTs in the final selection.

In the next episode we meet the “umpire”... and the most challenging task for any STS recruit.

LTA-41 arrived Tunnel City with no time to spare, barely squeaking in front of a west bound fleet of 149, 247, and 7. Once on CP, it was nothing but green signals and LTA was able to keep ahead of a fast approaching 7. Here we see them passing the Donehower station board, about 17 miles from hopping off the CP at Tower CK in Winona.

Winona is an island terminal on Union Pacific; a product of rationalizations and spin-offs by their predecessor CNW. These trackage rights trace their origins to the 1972 collapse of CNW's bore at Tunnel City. Initially, it appears that the CNW obtained a short section of trackage rights through the parallel Milwaukee bore before hopping back onto their own tracks on the other side.

This arrangement was expanded in 1977 when the CNW extended the trackage rights agreement all the way to Winona. This allowed them to abandon their own Mississippi River crossing in Winona, while still retaining an eastern connection to their Dakota Division and the famed "Alco Line".

By 1986 the CNW spun off the Huron Line and associated trackage to the new regional start-up Dakota Minnesota and Eastern. Excluded from this sale was Winona, resulting in the isolated terminal UP operates today. 36 years later, this island pocket of track still produces enough black on the spreadsheets to avoid raising any flags, for now.

Big thanks to those who made this happen, as we would have been hosed otherwise. Earlier in the morning I dropped DanK off at CUS, MP 0. 310 miles and 9.5 hours later, I waved at him at Tower CK.

This image was taken less than a second before the previous image, capturing the incoming wave before it crashes on the rocks.

It was a memorable evening at Elgol where conditions were constantly changing as Storm Dennis barreled across the Isle of Skye. We were treated to ever changing conditions, including a rising tide, gale force winds, driving rain, hail pellets, snow, grey skies, broken clouds, flat light which was often quickly followed with moments of gorgeous golden hour light.

We were a group of 7 togs dashing about capturing as many images as we could, in conditions we had only dreamed of before. For some reason, a majority of us eventually ended up here at the JCB (Joe Cornish Boulder). In the distance can be seen the snow capped Cuillins.

Looking forward to returning to Skye in the winter months of 2022.

A patch of 4m x 4m that i sowed in white mustard on May 31st. We are just 6 weeks later now and the plants are already well over 1m in height and in flower and the bees are working the patch of yellow despite the peak clover and bramble that are in full nectar flow right now.

A really lovely sunset tonight, first in ages. I popped to a very local beach and took a series of bracketed handheld shots not wishing to loiter with a tripod. I havn't got my editing glasses on so no idea if this is sharp, it was just nice to get out.

So the highlight of this week has been watching The Serpent. I wont give away any spoilers but it is SO good! Colourful and chilling at the same time with a lot of chain smoking and brilliant outfits!.

Thinking back to my "backpacking" trip in 1990. I wouldn't have been much good on the 70s hippie trail. I kept checking into nice hotels and my Dad picked up my credit card bill!! I can assure everyone he made up a spreadsheet and I paid him back every last penny.

This has been a great pot plant on the patio this summer. Just big enough for the bees to decide to bother with it even though there is only one plant. The bees working it are covered in pollen but they dont seem to collect it at all - working for nectar only on this.

Def going to have another couple of these next year.

Generally I like my job; it's challenging and has a variety of responsibilities to keep the brain churning... but today was not one of those days.

What was in front of me this morning was verifying information, which meant going through spreadsheets line by line.

But hey, not every day can be exciting right? And at least I managed to mix it up a bit with highlighters and by throwing in a photo of the day.

Side note: Is Flickr being difficult for anyone else? Uploading has become quite a challenge these past couple days.

Foggy tree.

This is a spin ICM taken on a foggy afternoon in January, on one of my local walks.

I was aiming for a kind of abstracty look, or the tree which ever you prefer :)

Andrew Haysom's excellent spreadsheet tells me that I am currenly 13.29 images behind on my 100x Monochrome & Toned image challenge, so I had better get my skates on (incidentally that's also good for ICMs).

I've just been away for a couple of weeks visiting my daughter, during which the world did a somersault. So I am now hoping to catch up a bit.
